Okay, so a lot of people are complaining about the patronus test, and I have a lot to say about it.
As my loyal followers know, I am very skeptical of the house tests on Pottermore for proper sorting, but when it comes to this patronus test, I’m not skeptical at all.
1. A patronus is supposed to reflect the deepest hidden aspects of yourself, the true raw you. A lot of people have had in mind what their patronus is forever (and that’s totally fine if you want to stick to it) but Jo wrote this test the way she did for a reason. She evidently has studied a lot about the symbolism of these animals. If you feel like on first glance your patronus doesn’t fit you, take a step back and research what the animal actually represents. I feel like it will surprise you.
2. People are complaining that it is timed, and honestly, it is the most brilliant thing she has done yet. That’s one of the problems with the other tests. Them not being timed gives us too much time to overthink. Because this test is about the deeper part of you and your “soul,” for it to be accurate, you have to answer with your initial gut feeling. If you weren’t timed, you wouldn’t answer it strictly from your gut feeling. Period. She made her test more accurate by doing it this way.
3. Yes, if you take it multiple times, you get multiple results because of different questions. That’s how all the tests are. If that wasn’t the case with this test especially, we would all easily get the same results if it was so easily replicable. Jo did us all a favor by trying to make us all feel unique. If you take it multiple times, you have more options to choose from. You’ll know which patronus out of those options feels right and which ones don’t. Just make sure the multiple times you take it, you’re still answering with your gut, not with previous knowledge.
4. She has so many options that it is amazing. Like honestly, she has animals in there that none of us would think of. It makes it so much more unique. I think the test is awesome, personally, and this is coming from someone who is skeptical of the Pottermore test’s accuracy.
5. There are a lot of hidden things we don’t see in ourselves. Like I said above, the patronus shows the parts of you that you don’t see all the time. If you were to get an animal you hate or are afraid of, think about what parts of that animal you don’t like. Is it because you have similar flaws/traits to that animal? Do you not like yourself sometimes? Are you afraid of yourself sometimes? Self-reflection with this really does go a long way. Just think about Remus with his patronus being a wolf. Yes, a wolf is different than a werewolf, but what are the odds that his patronus would be so similar to the condition that gives him grief constantly? A patronus shows the good parts of you, sure, but it also shows you the nitty gritty parts you might not want to accept. There is always bad that comes with the good.
You are all free to have whatever opinion of the test you want, but this is just my opinion. Everything about your identity is still your choice at the end of the day, but I’m just going to say after my rigorous research of all things HP (wands, houses, etc.) this is the only thing I would trust to figure out my patronus.
If you want to message me you can. If you want to look at my past analyses, go here to read about wands and go here to read about MBTI/Houses. If you want to make sure the rest of your wizarding identity is accurate, please read this post.
