To Freedom - We Salute

Hard fought battles, persistent struggles, 

Of our ancestors, how can we ever forget, 

The cost to which we owe this freedom. 

Lives given up, for the sake of the nation 

Bloodshed and the inconceivable sacrifice 

Centuries of hardships, all for that one moment. 

That moment of freedom, our own land, to live with autonomy, 

To this day we owe our independence to those who laid down their lives, 

Gone, for years, but never forgotten, in our hearts, they live on. 

Let us take it not for granted then 

Let us work towards further greatness,

As a great person once said, 

Attaining freedom is the very first step. 

Very first step, on the road to success and prosperity, 

Let us join hands, from across the borders, 

Let us be neighbors, and create an example, of a unity, never seen before. 

Let us celebrate the anniversary of our freedom 

By striving now to free our minds and souls 

Working towards creating a world with harmonious diversity

I salute today in memory of those who gave up their lives trying to make us see this proud day. 

Forever in our hearts, we will become a symbol of pride, 

For them, as we strive towards a joint community,

I was mistaken,

It is not red.

Pigmented, I think

From the internal

Wounds.

I carefully pour

It inside the pen

But some of it spills

Out anyway.

I sigh.

Residual waste.

I grip the object,

The soul entombed

Inside this casing of

Flesh, degenerating.

The first words are

Rough and untamed,

Gushing out like

Carbonic acid out of

A bottle of well shaken coke.

Then the flow of words

Is more uniform,

Even perversely beautiful

You could say

As my body gets

Used to the process.

The words grip me

Sending through me

Waves of euphoria,

Like I’m high on some drug

I probably shouldn’t mention

I hold on to whatever there is

Trying not to get swept away

By these forceful tides.

The words take over my hands

They come naturally

Waterfalls of delicately

Pleated lines cascading

Through my fingers

They write themselves

I am only an instrument.

I do not write the words.

They write me.

When this is over,

I close up my skin

Stitch by stitch

Gazing across the seams

Finishing up the dream.

I betray the words,

I sign off with my own name,

Leave it at the table

For anyone to read

Now that I’ve healed

At least for the time being.
