Questioner: Spren are reflections of how people in the Physical Realm see things. So if you have a Cognitive Shadow, would their personality change based on what people in the Physical Realm see them as?
Brandon Sanderson: The short answer is, not as much as you're worried about, no more than we tend to change based on what people say to us and how we interact with the people around us.
The long answer is, over a long period of time, it can happen. And it's gonna depend on a number of factors. But we're talking a matter of centuries not years. The same sort of thing you see happening to Vessels of Shards can happen to Cognitive Shadows.
So, the long answer is yes, but it's not an immediate worry. It's not like people start thinking of you and it shifts you because your perception of yourself is enough strong usually that it rebuffs these sorts of things, being self-aware does that. And a lot of the influence to spren and things like that happen during kind of formative not-quite-self-aware times, if that makes sense.
If you were to become a Cognitive Shadow right now, it wouldn't be a major concern, but in a thousand years, you may look back and say "wow, I was shaped by public perception in ways that I wasn't expecting"
Tldr: this is a Heralds/Kelsier problem. Got it.
Alright, this one is quite the fucking long shot, but to at least throw in an attempt at propaganda:
Kelsier puts the bitch in "I lived, bitch." He both faked his death and resurrection and did both for real. He lives and dies on his own terms.The real life time frame between his death and return was an actual decade. He deliberately sacrificed himself so he can then turn himself into a messianic figure by having a shapeshifter pretend to be him and whip the masses into a riot to avenge him.
Meanwhile, as a ghost he punched god and shit talked him into locking him out of the afterlife because he wanted to fuck with the world more. He then punched god's ex husband for good measure.
Also he temporarily supplanted god for real until his daughter was ready. He's still dead through all of this mind you. Only after kicking around as a ghost for a couple years did he hit up this one kid he knew in life to frankenstein him a new body, where he then fucked off to Antarctica to start a second religion that revolves around him before returning to start an interplanetary mafia when he discovered aliens are real and he wants to get all up in their business.
I love Aang. Phenomenal character. The kid is great but I'm sorry to say but the amount of fucking pizazz Kelsier does with his death and resurrection. Most people don't do much in the period of time between death and return. Kelsier temporarily became god.
Also this doesn't have anything really to do with the topic but Kelsier has a rivalry with an immortal vegan jester and they can't do anything to each other but hiss.
