i really wonder how much of hermann’s personality in uprising was because of his drift with newt, and how much of it was just… his natural personality? there’s definitely the whole factor of him having been under an INSANE amount of pressure in the first movie, which would make anyone cranky, and also most of what we saw was interactions with newt, which showed off his more antagonistic side by default. like, in uprising: his bright smile and positivity at his reunion with newt, “a mission? finally!!!”, him laying waste to the guards in the elevator without a second thought, immediately taking control of the situation and coordinating the final battle in tokyo… it somehow does feel like a natural extension of his characterization from the first movie, despite being so different?
Was thinking about how frighteningly smart Newt is today like…the pons thing? Drifting with like…really shitty equipment and just sticking a lil’ helmet on his and Hermann’s head like “Yeah so I did all this myself and it’s gonna work.” Like he D.I.Y.-ed that shit??? And yet made bigger strides than like everyone else on the planet basically???
Like who else was drifting at this time outside of Jaegers??? For research purposes??? And to just plunge in there w/o any training on his and Hermann’s part like oh my god??? He-christ, no wonder in fics we’re all labeling their work as “revolutionary” like it’s really out there being life changing and proving just about everyone wrong about methods (and the kaijus,) Dr. Newton Geiszler really Did That.
