happy 4th of july. today’s a good day to make like we did in 1776 and overthrow some political leaders with lifetime appointments who weren’t even democratically elected, cuz america still has those for some reason. like, 9 of them

I love how this ad is politely asking me to rotate my device because I guess their ad would best be viewed in landscape orientation. I mean thanks for not just autoplaying on me but did you actually think people would be like "oh boy I'd better rotate my device so I can watch this ad"

Yesterday I was birding in a wildlife refuge and this huge dog without a leash and no owner in sight ran up to me and started barking at me, and getting closer and closer. Literally thought it was going to pounce. It had a collar, but no owner in sight. I'm not afraid of dogs, but I am afraid of any large animal that's angry and has the capacity to knock me over. After about five minutes of this dog growling at me and me trying to calm it down, its owner finally showed up, and was like......"oh haha I thought he was yelling at an animal." As if it would have been normal and fine for the dog to attack the wildlife.

It's a wildlife refuge. There are endangered species that live there. Dogs are required to be leashed at the park...you know why?? Precisely because dogs like to go after birds and other small creatures.

This isn't even the first time I've dealt with unleashed dogs....

I was at a beach, collecting seashells and birding, when a huge pitbull ran up to me growling. Thankfully it didn't attack and just sniffed my bag, but the owner was just a speck in the horizon, didn't care that their dog was running around doing god knows what. The dog could have gone after the wildlife, too.

People letting their cats roam free outdoors 🤝 People that let their dogs run around without a leash:

Endangering their pet, the environment, and other people with their stupid choices

Keep your dog on a fucking leash

It's not just wildlife. It's other people dogs too. I dogsat for a coworker who had a not-always-friendly-to-other-dogs dog. She was also 20 pounds and easy to carry if needed, but sometimes she was fine with other dogs and sometimes she chose violence. I took Doggo on walks several times over the week I watched her. Always in places dogs are required to be on leash. Always during times we were less likely to run into other people walking dogs. In one such place, a park near where the coworker lived, we stopped to sit on a bench (Doggo sat up next to me for love) for a few minutes. Out of nowhere a large pitbull bounded up to us. I immediately scooped up Doggo, stood, and turned to face the pibble. While the pibble was clearly just excited and happy, the owner was a significant distance away. Owner once he got to us, with a big grin: Oh don't worry she's friendly! She loves other dogs too! Me, holding a clearly upset dog: Mine isn;t and she doesn't. The look on his face made it clear that other dogs not being friendly wasn't even a thought he had when he took the leash, that was in his hand, off his dog. Again in a park with numerous "Keep your dog leashed!" signs. As I walked by with a now growling dog in my arms, I told him he needed to keep his dog on a leash - like the park required. I carried her until we were out of sight and she was calm. If I hadn't responded like I did, there could have been major problems from not only me and the dog I was walking, but also the other dog and owner. Not everyone has dog-friendly (or even people-friendly) dogs. Give unknown dogs space and for God's sake: Keep your dog on a fucking leash.

very excited about this new medical option where we swallow a vibrator

i regret to inform you all that i did the research so you dont have to, and its exactly what you think. it's a machine. its got an app. you can monitor the pill, in your body, through the app.

you raise such a good question

what is endgame for the vore vibrators

y'all, literly nothing on this website will tell me what is in the capsule or what happens to the capsule when it comes out the other end, but I have learned that it takes 3 weeks of treatment to see significant results and also that you have to place the capsule in an "activation pod" before you swallow it

and yes there is an app

I found a pdf they provide for physicians and I am currently making my way through it

current fun facts:

-the Pod has a usb charger and a wall adapter

-do not MRI this capsule, dear god

-do not bite the capsule

-if a child swallows a capsule they need to go to the hospital

more fun facts from the dosing instructions

there are no directions for what to do at the end of the line so I am assuming the mystery capsule (that should not be allowed around pacemakers) gets flushed

it does say to see a doctor if you think it has not been excreted "within 2 weeks"

ps I assume this is standardized language, but I LOVE the idea that the vore vibrator might accidentally interfere with TV and radio

okay but I bet there are very specific, and rare, uses for this device that are actually really important. people with severe allergies to medications, people with some sort of paralysis-type issue of the actual muscles of their colon. things that maybe enough fiber cannot fix. I've known of people using a TENS unit to help them regain bladder control because the device basically exercises and strengthens the muscles. or even maybe manually do something the body can't do for itself anymore. if you read in the comments of this post you will find people talking about intestinal collapse and very specific problems that literally have nothing to do with fiber. there are a lot of rare things that can happen to a body that require extremely niche solutions

I'll admit that this is hilarious and also kind of nightmarish on the surface, but this might actually help some people who had no other recourse. obviously this shouldn't be used by someone who can just drink prune juice to fix their problems, and thankfully so because yes, mass use would be terrible for the planet, but very very limited use in dire situations I think could be worth the environmental impact. unlike most items in stores, medical waste IS kind of justified, despite it's environmental impact, because it's necessary to save lives

yes, yes, yes, thank you

I led with the jokes because it's objectively funny, and it wasn't until I started seeing the comments on this post that I realized a lot of people didn't know that this has genuine potential applications!

It's funny *and* functional--it's approved for use specifically in cases that have already eliminated other medical options; the fundamentals of the tech are already decades established in endoscopes; and the way it works is entirely related to the way the smooth muscle of the gut responds to internal mechanical stimulus

i was rewatching the rite of spring segment from fantasia and i've got to wonder. Why Did We Draw Archaeopteryx Like That. i remember toys having that same, boomerang arm shaped pose too. it's like a monkey lizard more than a bird.

Ooh okay this is a fun one cause while it technically is an Archaeopteryx and is listed as such in the production draft, I don't think the design is based on Archaeopteryx at all!

To me, this "Archaeopteryx" almost exactly resembles something else, the fascinating historical phenomenon called Proavis.

Proavis, or Tetrapteryx as some four-winged interpretations were called, was a hypothetical prehistoric creature that was proposed in the early 20th century as a best guess at what the unknown ancestor of birds could have looked like. The illustration above was drawn in 1926 by Gerhard Heilmann, a Danish artist and amateur scientist who argued that birds evolved from non-dinosaurian archosaurs like Euparkeria. In his 1916 book Vor Nuvaerende Viden om Fuglenes Afstamning and the 1926 English translation The Origin of Birds, he presented Proavis as the imagined midpoint between a scaly ground-running archosaur and Archaeopteryx, which at the time held the title of The First Bird.

Other versions of the same hypothesis, like William Beebe's Tetrapteryx above, were published and discussed around the same time, but it was Heilmann's Proavis that gained immense popularity to the point that bird evolution was considered essentially "solved" for decades. It was also painted by Zdeněk Burian, one of the Old Greats of palaeoart, which kept the concept alive in dinosaur books for decades as well.

Of course further study has shown this hypothesis to be incorrect and that birds are instead members of Dinosauria (and honestly Heilmann either missed or ignored a lot of evidence for a dinosaurian origin of birds even in the 1910s), but the Proavis to me remains a beautiful and fascinating concept that represents scientists and artists striving to understand the prehistoric world and the passage of evolution, much like we still do today!

And of course, its popularity in the early 20th century put it at the perfect time for Fantasia's artists to take... let's say heavy inspiration from Heilmann's imaginary Proavis when depicting a creature that was intended to be Archaeopteryx the whole time! The pattern of feathers matches up almost exactly, although the larger leg wings might have been inspired by Beebe's Tetrapteryx as well:

So to get back to your original question that led to this whole deep dive, artists didn't actually Draw Archaeopteryx Like That except when they were mistakenly drawing something that wasn't Archaeopteryx at all! If you want to read more about the Proavis and Tetrapteryx I recommend this Tetrapod Zoology blog post by Darren Naish, he does into more depth about the history of the concept and some of the unusual evolutionary ideas that Heilmann used to arrive at this weird and cool imaginary creature!

The draft is definitely worth a read. That’s not Ornitholestes trying to grab Archaeopteryx, as I had long assumed, but Troodon!

The point shouldn't be to identify for sure 100% what is ai art and what isn't. I keep seeing posts advising one to look out for wonky perspective (as if perspective doesn't routinely trip up even the most experienced artists) or to pay attention to fudged detailing (as if impressionism wasn't one of the most influential artistic movements in history), and I think that's coming from a good place but frankly it's a losing battle. Remember when everyone was on about counting the fingers or counting the teeth, and a week later they had that shit ironed out completely? All you're really doing is giving these people more data points to work with to refine their algorithm. It's just going to be constantly shifting goalposts, and at a certain point real artists are going to get exhausted trying to make their art look as not algorithmically generated as possible. It'll be impossible to keep up.

So what should we do? Honestly, I think old practices are still best practices. Find real artists and follow them. Don't repost art, and dont spread reposted art. If something doesn't have a source, skip it. Support artists you like, either by sharing their work directly or donating. And if someone's work looks suspicious? Maybe give them a second look. See some of their other art before jumping to conclusions.

And yes, that means sometimes, you're gonna be tricked. Some people are going to fly under the radar and pass off ai art as their own. And that sucks, and they're liars, but you can't let the obsession with bad actors police real artists out of their communities, or discourage new artists from entering the scene.

I’m sorry friends, but “just google it” is no longer viable advice. What are we even telling people to do anymore, go try to google useful info and the first three pages are just ads for products that might be the exact opposite of what the person is trying to find but The Algorithm thinks the words are related enough? And if it’s not ads it’s just sponsored websites filled with listicles, just pages and pages of “TOP FIFTEEN [thing you googled] IMAGINED AS DISNEY PRINCESSES” like… what are we even doing anymore, google? I can no longer use you as shorthand for people doing real and actual helpful research on their own.

Time to drop some links again.

https://searchmysite.net/ Search engine for the indie web, personal websites, digital gardens. You can also find them in websites like Neocities, Indieweb, Blogarama, and write.as. There is also a big list of personal websites.

https://search.marginalia.nu/ Search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and promotes websites that aren’t usually at the top of the list.

https://www.worldcat.org/ Search engine for items in libraries (books, but also maps, articles, sound recordings, theses, etc.)

https://scholar.google.com/ Search engine for scientific papers, reviews, etc. It’s still google, but a lot better than the normal search engine counterpart.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_search_engines A list of search engines sorted by subject, area, and more. If you’re searching on a specific area, it might be worth checking if there is one focused on that area.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_academic_databases_and_search_engines A list of academic databases and search engines.

https://tineye.com/ Reverse image search alternative to Google’s. Also, P.S.: Please stop using Google, and start using more privacy focused search engines, like DuckDuckGo or SearchX (opensource; personally haven’t used it yet, but it looks promising for privacy-focused users)

That Google and Meta can get away with this during an era of intense misinformation and disinformation signals that we cannot rely on large tech companies to provide reliable access to information and news:

you've heard of "doom can be ported to anything" and now we're excited to announce "anything can be ported to doom"

you joke but this has very much been a regular thing in the doom community for nearly 30 years, and with the fan-built engine gzdoom removing the last bit of code it had tied to the original game's license in 2017, it has been possible to make completely standalone games in that engine for over half a decade... so naturally people have been doing just that :)

But it does.

It does… one at a time.  It’d be useful to be able to select more than one. G&T but not higher, M&E only, everything but E for those who just don’t like smut. (btw I just checked and there is none of the exclusion filters showing on the search page at least in my computer)

AO3 does ‘and’ filters.

You don’t filter for M&E. You filter for not the other stuff.

I have never seen so many users clearly baffled by and too skittish to push buttons/toggles that are very clearly meant to be used.

If a trusted website has a button and you don’t immediately know or understand what it does, push it. Check out every drop down, every link, every configuration imaginable. Be adventurous. Fuck around and find out. If it breaks the website, they shouldn’t have had that button in the first place. Not on you. Indulge your curiosity instead of complaining it doesn’t do something it absolutely does if you poke around a little.

You’re not going to get a bad grade in filtering by using interface features from AO3, I promise.

Look, there are library systems that don’t have filters as good as AO3. You have to learn how to use Boolean operators (AND OR NOT) and construct a proper query to exclude in several academic databases, and AO3 just performs “NOT” for you by clicking a button.

Do you know how many grad students would love to have the kind of power you have with AO3 in filters?

Ao3 filters are amazing. You can filter out ratings, you can filter out characters or pairings, you can filter out specific tags (as long as it’s an official tag)! (Type it in under “other tags to exclude”)

This is why the antis complaining about seeing content they don’t like on Ao3 is so frustrating. If something squicks you out, filter it, and you never have to see it again! Voila! Or even if it is just something you don’t like. I have High School AUs filtered out because I just don’t like them! It’s an amazing system and makes it so easy to curate your experience.

There are in fact tutorials on AO3 for how to use filters! They’re a little difficult to find because they’re admin blog posts, but they exist!

They’re here (basics), here (search within results #1), and here (search within results #2), for anyone who needs them, and not only do they cover the checkboxes, they also cover how to filter for things that aren’t part of the checkbox list using the search within results field!

These tutorials have saved my sanity so many times when I want (or want to avoid) very specific things in my search, and I highly recommend them.
