Happy 2nd Birthday, Captain Marvel! || March 8, 2019
Why are catholics even on here if they’re clearly not having any fun
March has some fucking nerve showing it’s face around here again
GET A LOAD OF THAT DOG
[distantly] THAT DOG
This is hands down my favorite video on the internet and I am so happy it showed back up on my dash!
armageddon is an emotion palette
OK BUT SEE HERE IS THE THING WHEN YOU ARE WRITING CROWLEY there are too few words, by several hundred, to describe Crowley’s involuntary expressions. And it makes me berserk. At any given moment when I’m writing Crowley, I can see EXACTLY which of the 7,000 chaotic Crowley faces Tennant is making, but here I sit weeping over the maybe two dozen paltry words I have to work with, so can I PLEASE figure out a non-tacky way to make mini-mouse-over gifs appear when I need them so the reader will know WHICH snarl or WHICH smirk or WHICH eyebrow thing or WHICH sneer I am talking about (there are at least 834 different sneers, fuck me, they should have sent a taxonomist) Michael Sheen, on the other hand, chooses to play Aziraphale as more of a speed runner – his virtuosic microexpressions cycle through dozens of emotions per second. But each one is precise and recognizeable. I’m particularly fond of his surprise-fear-consideration-realization-fondness-joy-guilt-defiance-regret-self-rememberance as a power combo, usually culminating in a Keri-Strugg-level perfect 10 landing on Angelically Polite And Pleasant. All of which he accomplishes in perhaps .3 seconds. So when it comes to facial expressions, Sheen’s doing Da Vinci level attention to precision and detail, which can at least be described, but Tennant is over here fucking Picasso-ing all over the place, and PLEASE give me more words for Crowley’s faces, please. I have tried, BELIEVE ME I have tried. But “tweaked his nasolabial sulcus and pinched his superciliary arch with an asymmetrycal tug of his philtrum” just doesn’t have the punch I’m looking for. Anyway. Back to writing Crowley, and trying to limit myself to two sneers, three grimaces, and a lip curl per chapter. (Which results in the prose equivalent of describing Beethoven’s 9th as “a few violins and some wind instruments and a couple singers got together, and they were loud, then soft, then loud again, with some happys and sads”) Goddammit. I mean, in Crowley’s case She already did, but you get the idea.
This is less a reply to @charlottemadison42 and more a general commentary for writers who worry. Charlotte is a fantastic writer who doesn’t need any more advice on killing with words.
Anyway.
The thing about writing is that you can’t describe everything. You have to leave some gaps for the reader to fill in on their own. That’s a good thing, a tool that you learn to use to your advantage.
Writing fanfic for a film or TV show means that your readers already have a mental image of the characters. We know their expressions and speech patterns and gestures. That means that you get to create the scenario, point your characters at it, and trust that your readers will fill in the blanks appropriately. Writing the minutiae of a facial expression won’t ever be as effective as creating the perfect scenario for a Crowley face moment and having your readers imagined it for themselves.
Just in case anyone is reading this and thinking “oh no! If Charlotte worries about this and I’ve not thought about it before then I must be doing it wrong!” Don’t worry. You’re doing great. I promise.
(a perfect caveat to my ridiculous midnight rant. writing is hard, writer problems never go away, but @luritto is 100% correct and i promise you are doing amazing, sweetie, whoever you are.)
If you have epilepsy/photosensitivity, you may want to avoid the Quick Reblog thing on mobile for the time being. For some reason the green confirmation bar at the bottom of the screen is now flashing rapidly (basically strobing) whenever I Quick Reblog a post, and Tumblr Support hasn't gotten back to me about it besides the standard list of basic troubleshooting.
THANK YOU
I’m still confused ._.
Art Nouveau is flowing like nature. Art deco is rigid and looks more man made.
deco = geometric
nouveau = organic
^^^because of that, usually deco makes use of symmetry, while art nouveau, being indeed more natural and flowy/organic, doesn’t use symmetry that much. The two doors/gates are a good example of this!
I definitely recall an old post here on tumblr explaining it as
“Art Deco is the one with the plinky-plonks, Art Nouveau is the one with all the swirly-boops”
My conservative family members seeing me taking up embroidery:
One week later when I post the finished project:
I had to reblog this as soon as I stopped laughing
My sister did this. Only her masterpiece that my parents HATE is

I made this for my sister and I believe she has it hung up in pride of place in her home, which I feel good about.
This is a cursed image of Michael B. Jordan, reblog in 10 seconds or you will have the worst week ever!
supernatural as a piece of media consistently amazes me. you've got the rock music and the leather jackets and the classic car. you've got the americana. you've got the spooky stuff. you've got the wildly complicated relationship with masculinity. and then four seasons in you add angels and demons and God and Satan. and now there's motifs of religion and hell and guilt and loving someone in the face of everything you're supposed to be. based on every single thing about it there is NO WAY this show could ever manage to be uncompelling to me. however it was made by straight men
I have been on this web site for more than a decade I have seen women and gays make the most gorgeous fascinating art and fiction and gifsets that are in theory based off Supernatural and then you go to watch the show and it periodically sneezes in the direction of the coolest plotline you could ever imagine and then just wanders off into the muck again. it's like having a friend who's gorgeous and smart and funny and then you meet her boyfriend and he is a worm
THIS ISN'T HATE it's just fascinating to me to see the potential of a piece of media so thoroughly tapped by the fanbase and so wholly untapped by the writers. you guys are doing amazing. eric krupke on the other hand
