An Average Person

@just-anaverage-person

Nothing to see here, just a normal person. they/them

society's infantilization of decorated objects is honestly one of the greatest recent crimes against humans' innate desire for beauty

"the toothbrush/hairbrush/bike/vanity desk with flowers on it is For Kids! this plain beige one is For Adults!"

I am literally throwing you into a volcano

Another pet peeve is: "oh, you still watch/read wholesome and idealistic things? How childish. Everyone your age watches *insert cynical show where there's copious sex, violence, and everyone is a terrible human*"

You apparently can't have anything that is pretty or uplifts you because only children like to be happy and not engage in self-inflicted misery.

As someone who likes Disney movies AND dark stuff, to be honest this particular discourse feels like being bi all over again. Pick a side! Pick a side!

Yes, fans of dark media act like assholes sometimes, but let’s not pretend that toxic positivity isn’t woven into the fabric of society. I turned to dark media because it was the only way I was actually allowed to have dark feelings, so I’m gonna need Team Soft Media to climb down from its collective high horse here.

I like dark stuff, too. I've gotten shamed both ways, but the post was relating to shaming adults for liking pretty/wholesome things so that's what I talked about. I don't really care that you like dark stuff, but it's not a high horse for me to talk about my personal experiences. We need both light and dark stuff in order to appreciate life as a general rule. I don't want to drown in misery but I also don't want to pretend bad stuff doesn't happen. This was not a personal attack on you or anyone else who likes both (for me at least). I am not on a side other than "leave me alone and don't shame me for liking nice things."
