That’s it Athelstan, force those carnal thoughts deep down inside, see how long you can keep them there with those two around.

Y’know, I’ve tried and tried to read his body language/expressions in this scene as, “That’s it. I have clearly descended into a violent and depraved Hell.” I mean, that’s what we’re supposed to think he’s going through, right? He’s just experienced a sudden, violent attack, his brothers being murdered; being kidnapped, bound, and taken across the sea, and now officially enslaved by these people. Their invitation for him to engage in such a filthy, sinful act surely is supposed to be just one more thing to add to the list of brutal, awful things he’s experienced in the past several days.

And yet … Instead of him being revolted by their lovemaking, he has to force himself to read his Gospel instead of watch them going at it. Instead of expressing disgust at the proposition, or even just plain telling them that he doesn’t want to, he falls back on his vows. He wants this, and the only reason he says no is because he’s still desperately trying to hang on to the person he was before Ragnar showed up. That next scene, when he tries to shave his head again, even if he’s hurting himself doing it? That’s penance. That’s him punishing himself for even considering the offer—because he did.

Yes, the Northmen did awful things to him and people he cared about. Yes, Ragnar enslaved him. But he was not a free man to begin with. He was enslaved by the church, which had owned him since he was a child, and bound by their harsh rules of asceticism. In putting that rope around his neck, Ragnar actually gave him more freedom than he had ever had before, and this scene makes it clear that Athelstan knows it.

All of this.  He wasn’t repulsed by their offer at all, he was desperately trying to cling to religious reasons not to join them.  He never actually told them “no”, just that “it would be a sin.” He wants to, but his enslavement to the church would forbid it, and he knows of no other way to exist.

hi!!! just wanted to tell you that I'm glad to find another person who likes or at least sympathizes with Laoghaire. It is so liberating. The woman deserves more credit than she gets. She lives in a misogynistic society that has been oppressing her and it's all she knows. Also, for a long time, she single-handedly had to raise two girls in a home where there was domestic violence (she suffered from rape and other types of abuse) and yet, if you stop to look at M and J, given the conditions they grew up in, they are relatively well off. Their mother loved them, and took as much care as she could to make sure they were okay. He imagined her putting her best face on for them after an intense fight with her abusive husband so the girls wouldn't worry. I would be so happy to be able to read fics of Laoghaire and her daughters together and happy. Also, I hate the female representation in outlander. It's garbage. All the women are bad, their arcs are poorly written, you can tell DG didn't put much effort into her stories. All the story about other women are so poor and poorly developed. All my girls deserve more than what Diana Gabaldon gave them. I feel protective of all of them.

Hope you are having a good day 🤗

Watch: Kiosk - Sweet Destiny (the movie) I don’t think I’ve ever asked my followers to reblog anything but this time it would mean. The actual world. To the people of Iran. If you could spread awareness of the Iranian people’s fight for freedom right now. I’m not on Twitter or Instagram (although this post is optimized for instagram so PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REPOST IT ON IG) but from what I could see there is not as much noise about this as it should be. Nor is it easy to find posts with resources and basic information. And on tumblr I’ve only seen some posts from dedicated feminist blogs or actual Iranians. And from what I’ve gathered they NEED US to share what’s going on. They are shutting down internet in Iran so it’s up to us to not let the world look past this, not this time. PLEASE join the fight for women’s rights!!!
