Here’s the whole video. It’s called “Don’t Be A Sucker” and it’s 17 minutes long.

don’t just scroll past this actually watch it, it’s only 2 minutes long. If you re-recorded this today word for word with modern actors and places, it wouldn’t even look out of place as a PSA

300,000 notes and i can’t find a transcript

Transcript: (sorry for the language!)

Speaker: “I see negroes holding jobs that belong to me! And you! I’ll ask you, if we allow this thing to go on, what’s gonna become of us real Americans!”

Hungarian man with clear foreign accent: “I’ve heard this kind of talk before, but I never expected to hear it in America.”

Young man: “This man seems to know what he’s talking about.“

Speaker: “What are us real Americans gonna do about it? You’ll find it right here in this little pamphlet—the truth about negroes and foreigners! The truth about the Catholic Church! You’ll find…” [audio grows quieter as camera shifts to the onlookers]

Hungarian man: “You believe in that kind of talk?“

Young man: “I dunno, it makes pretty good sense to me.“

Speaker: “And I tell you, friends, we’ll never be able to call this country our own until it’s a country without… without what?“

Other man: “Yeah? Without what?“

Speaker: “Without negroes, without alien foreigners,”—the young man is nodding, following along—“without Catholics, without Freemasons! You know these…“

Young man: “What’s wrong with the Masons, I’m a Mason.” Looks to European man worriedly, “hey, that fellow’s talking about me!“

Huungarian man: “And that makes a difference, doesn’t it.“

Speaker: “These are your enemies! These are the people who are trying to take over our country! Now you know them, you know what they stand for. And it’s up to you and me to fight them!” A bunch of the onlookers in the vicinity wave him off like he’s crazy and turn away, “fight them and destroy them before they destroy us!”

Speaker: “Thank you.“

One man in the now somewhat awkward crowd: “claps“

Young man: *is visibly uncomfortable*

Hungarian man: “Before he said Mason, you were ready to agree with him.”

Young man: “Well yes but, he was talking about… what about those other people?“ *the pair sit down on a park bench*

Hungarian man: “In this country, we have no ‘other people.’ We are American people, of course.“

Young man: “What about you? You aren’t American, are you?“

Hungarian man: “I was born in Hungary. But now, I am an American citizen. And I have seen what this kind of talk can do. I saw it in Berlin.”

Young man: “What were you doing there?“

Hungarian man: “I was a professor at the university. I heard the same words we have heard today. But I was a fool, then. I thought Nazis were crazy people, stupid fanatics. But unfortunately it was not so. You see, they knew that they were not strong enough to conquer a unified country, so they split Germany into small groups. They used prejudice as a practical weapon to cripple the nation.”

People might bring up Vincent van Gogh as an example of a painter who did great work in spite of, or because of, his suffering. I like to think that van Gogh would have been even more prolific and even greater if he wasn't so restricted by the things tormenting him. I don't think it was pain that made him so great, I think painting brought him whatever happiness he had.

just got the email to say that the UK government will not be implementing an independent evaluation of the Cass review and I'm. fucking exhausted

ok ok I'm rallying myself here. hope is not lost. it's taken a blow and it's awful but it's not lost.

For context, there is currently an official petition going calling for an independent review of the Cass report, which has been widely criticised by pro-trans groups, academics, and educational psychologists, among others. (You can find links to these criticisms here). Criticisms range from the lack of peer review (for a report that can influence national policy!) to the exclusion of trans researchers from the process and its underlying assumption that gender transition is an undesirable outcome. At a certain number of signatures (10,000 iirc), the government has to issue a response. Their response has been to double down on support for the Cass review:

The Government and NHS England are fully committed to implementing all recommendations from the independent and evidence based Cass Review. We do not support an independent evaluation of the Review.
(the full response is included in the petition link below)

But! The petition is still going:

It has 11,440 signatures. If it can get to 100,000 signatures, the petition will be considered for debate in parliament. If you're in the UK, please sign. The state of gender-affirming healthcare for transgender people is currently deplorable, and set to get worse if we cannot make headway against the rising tide of transphobia and ignorance that is dictating government decisions.

You can also write to your MP

The charity Mermaids has created a tool to make emailing your MP asking for their support easy. This tool isn't specifically regarding the Cass review – the main concern is on the ban on puberty blockers, which is equally pressing. However, they provide a template message that you can add to and easily modify:

If you're in the UK and can spare 15–30 minutes to sign the petition and email your MP, you can do something that, although it may seem small, could contribute to a strong cumulative action. If you can't, please reblog this post and share the links as far as you can ❤️

To anyone wondering if it's worth it to tear down fascist posters or whatever. I spent a few months last year engaged in silent battle with another student at my school who was putting anti trans stickers up everywhere. I had it down to a system where every night I would walk the five block radius they went up in, and tear down all the ones I could reach, and use a stick to put duct tape over the others. Like, within hours of the stickers going up, I would have already purged the whole zone. I knew the basic schedule of whoever put them up based on when and where the stickers appeared. I probably could have found them in person if I'd wanted to. And I told all my classmates and friends what the stickers looked like and got them to rip them down too. And after a few months of this, the stickers slowed, and then stopped forever.

My point is, a lot of this fashy or right wing stuff is one local weirdo. And if you pay attention, and do a little light organizing with your friends, you can basically make their efforts into a giant sisyphisean exercise in misery. You control your streets!

Remember: It costs money to keep printing those stickers, but ripping them down is free.

"We keep making our service worse, cancelling shows before their time, hiking up the prices, and generally ruining what once was a decent product--piracy keeps wining somehow. 🤷"

This is especially funny because early on, part of Netflix's business model was to look at what series were being pirated and acquire them, and a lot of pirates would just use Netflix because it was easier and not too expensive.

But then Netflix made themselves infinitely more inconvenient and you'll never guess what happened next

Okay so I got Rednote because I heard about the whole migration thing and I never bothered to sign up before, and the cultural exchange has just been really fascinating

Some sentiments I see from the Chinese side:

  • For a lot of people, it's the first time they've been able to directly interact with foreigners and make use of the mandatory English classes that they've been taking since elementary school
  • This is a special in moment in time, where the people in both countries can just converse and see just how similar they really are. Many people are staying up late to really get the most out of it because we don't know how long this can last
  • Lots of misconceptions being corrected, including but not limited to: Americans don't get period cramps, Christmas and Jesus are Korean, all Americans have big houses like on TV, work in the U.S. is easygoing
  • Finding similarities between parents, like asking if they're digging a hole to the U.S., or saying that when they were young they had to walk uphill to school in the snow both ways
  • Two things they were shocked by: cost of university (in China, the better the school, the less you pay), and learning about rural food deserts in the U.S. ("aren't they farmers?")
  • Lots of comparisons on the cost of rent/groceries/medical costs/salary/work hours etc, with the resulting sentiment that the common people everywhere really are the same and have a common enemy
  • Lots of them have changed their typing habits so that it's easier to machine translate and are now stuck with a sort of "translation accent" in their Chinese from that as well as reading so much machine translated Chinese
  • After the Americans joined, the quality of the posts have gone way up ("Rednote algorithm knows there's guests here and so is serving the best dishes now" / "Why has Rednote been hiding the good stuff? The guests are worthy but we aren't?")

Also there was a post asking Americans to post pics of their work lunches, but I think the Chinese users might've been disappointed by the comments, because half the comment section was pictures of empty hands ("Didn't have the time") or like. a cup of coffee

“Kill shelters” are the shelters you need to donate to.

“But shrimp!! Kill shelters are evil!!”

No, shut up, listen to me for a second.

“Kill shelter” is a colloquial term used primarily for Town/City (aka municipal) shelters that rely on incredibly limited government grant funding to operate.

These shelters, by the very nature of their existence, DO NOT HAVE the funds to operate like private rescues do.

On top of this, they’re also *legally required* to take in ANY animal that comes to them. Even if they’re full. Or they’ll lose all of their funding.

This is what leads them to needing to euthanize for space. Is euthanizing for space sad? Yes. But due to the current crisis, it’s also NECESSARY.

These shelters are constantly overfull. They’re STRUGGLING. They don’t have the funds to operate properly. And yet these municipal, government funded, struggling shelters are the same ones that are most likely to be providing care for owned animals in the community

Municipal (“kill”) shelters are the ones hosting low cost spay and neuter clinics. They’re the ones discounting vaccination appointments and microchipping. They’re the ones that have pet food banks so struggling pet owners can feed their pets that week.

These shelters are not evil. They’re doing the absolute best they can with the bare minimum funding they get.

These people are incredibly resourceful and care very deeply about the animals in their care. It breaks their heart every time they have to euthanize an animal that couldn’t get adopted.

These underfunded shelters need your money significantly more than that fancy private rescue you see on TikTok or instagram that has a beautiful facility and has never had to euthanize an animal ever.

Support your local shelters and they will give back to the community thousand fold.

Sincerely, an animal welfare student who’s tired of seeing the hardest working professionals shat on because of circumstances they can’t control.

Don't just donate money, either. Find out if your local shelter has any social media or their own website, because chances are they'll have links to donation pages on those. And they aren't just requesting money. They're requesting all sorts of things such as food, toys, blankets, cleaning supplies, and the list actually goes on.

And there's one other thing you can donate as well if you are able to do it: your own home. By which I mean fostering an animal until it gets adopted into a permanent home. This has the advantage of keeping the animal out of the shelter (which can be very scary and stressful for all of them) as well as helps the shelter staff learn what the animal is like in a home environment, which helps to get them adopted faster. Not to mention if it's being housed in a kill shelter, it means that that one won't be euthanized for space.

the world is running out of glassblowers and yet you want to become a fucking doctor

One of the most jarring moments of my university education was in a physics class when I was given a device that measures gravity and was told “this cost the university sixteen thousand dollars, but the only glass blower in the world who could make the glass springs inside it died so it’s literally irreplaceable. If you drop it those springs will shatter. Go fuck around with it for a day and take some measurements”

If you are truly interested in becoming a scientific glassblower, Salem Community College in New Jersey has a 2 year associates degree program for it, and if you actually complete it, you’re practically guaranteed a job in the field if you want one.

The program is amazing. I spent a year in that program before getting into an MFA program. If you really want to learn how to flamework glass, there is no better place to do so IMO.

A weird quirk about that program is that it also attracts a number of pipe makers (at least when I went there in the mid 2010s).

10/10 would definitely recommend.

Love love love characters that present themselves as emotionally open social butterflies but the more you see of them the more obvious it is that they’re the most closed off fuckers in the story. Sure, they want to help you with your personal problems and messy emotions, but if you turn that shit back on them, they’ll shut down or deflect every time. Why are you sticking your nose in their business anyway? It’s not like it matters. They’re not a person, they’re just a role being played. They’re the guy who fixes things and saves people. Please ignore the man behind the mask, he’s fine. Everything’s fine.

BTW i see these posts all the time like "ohhh i dont know what to comment on fics.." and every response is "keysmashes! or hearts!! anything works :3" and thats GREAT!! thats helpful!!

but: consider. if u genuinely like analyzing writing.. do u know ur just allowed to go through and quote your favorite parts and ramble abt what they mean to u and the author will LOSE IT WITH HYPE?

genuinely. i felt SO WEIRD the first time i did it.. but like. holy shit authors love it. its crack for authors. the first time i did it, it was on a fic that hadnt updated in half a year, give or take, and the author made 3 updates that month BECAUSE OF MY COMMENT.

LIKE. as an author every comment is INCREDIBLE!!! but also, dont feel like your comment has to be short or otherwise ur invasive or smth!! authors ADORE long comments more than ANYTHING.
