please stop treating the word neurodivergent like it means the overlap between autism and adhd

i dont know how to articulate this well but some of you act like neurodiversity starts with adhd and ends with autism. you talk about "the neurodivergent experience" and everytime you mean "the overlapping experience of adhd and autism."

please remember us when talking about neurodiversity. ocd, dyslexia, dyscaculia, personality disorders, tourettes, intellectual disabilities, schizo-spec disorders, etc. all fall under neurodiversity.

please stop saying neurodivergent when you mean "autism and adhd."

this post is okay to reblog but do not clown on it

This. The adhd + austisic experience is not the entirety of neurodivergency.

Some shit is near universal: Like educational trauma and feeling of social isolation.

Most of it isnt.

Also some stuff that is treated as specifically ADHD/Autism Culture™️ is just general symptoms that can be caused by a number of different mental illnesses.

Let's hear this again, but louder for the girlies in the back

(and also for the people who just need to hear this. Not just for the uneducated neurotypical people, but also for the neurodivergent people who need to know that they are part of some sort of bigger group and they need to know that they aren't supposed to be excluded from this label)

Why did this scare me???

Why did this strike fear????

i make sure togive all my adhd friends clear drinking glasses because if there’s one consistency i’ve noticed with these fuckers is if they cant see that a vessel is empty they will continue to put it to their mouth and try to take a drink of nothing

It’s amazing how on the internet I’m like hey here’s a thing that helped me. Maybe it will help you.

And then someone is always like if I do that thing though it will kill me.

Probably don’t do it then. Idk what you want from me, man.

If I’m like adding tomato to your sandwich is yummy and you’re like “but I’m deathly allergic to tomatoes what am I supposed to do”

Idk dude. Not eat tomatoes I guess.

I’ve got this old post where I was like hey sometimes it’s fun to try to get a chore done while you’re waiting for water to boil or something. Might help if you have adhd. It’s free deadline.

And I still get people commenting on that post like uhm no some of us have anxiety so bad that we’d pass out if we did that.

Like. Probably don’t do that then?

Tumblr has trouble with the concept that there's a huge range of options in between "forbidden" and "compulsory."

The butch lesbian/trans man "funky printed button down" stereotype is true but you must understand that the men's section of so many clothing stores is a bleak and miserable place. Clothing manufacturers are simply convinced that no one who wears men's clothes wants anything besides the most boring outfits possible. Often stripes are the most exciting it gets. If you want to wear clothing designed for men but happen to like "color" and "joy" in your life then often the funky printed button down or the hawaiian shirt are simply your only options, especially off the clearance rack.

Also if the above is you, I highly recommend @morningwitchy and @carmico 🙏🩵🩵

not to be a Brand and plug myself here but since i was tagged: i, nonbinary, make funky button downs in fun patterns that many have described as gender affirming/euphoric :^) they come in unisex sizing xs-4XL, 100% cotton, with button on the hips for extra room! also, i have tees/pants/jackets to match.

i wanna add @mayakern is doing button ups now and has preorders going on! and @irrel has some fun dnd themed button ups!

As a person of Gay Voice experience I think more characters should be free to sound like CGI Pinocchio. Acting is such a famously gay field yet actors are told to act straight to get their parts… we need more characters with Starbucks barista voice and I think we should start dubbing over old films to right a historical wrong, starting with an even gayer version of Luke Skywalker

i have no object permanence about myself. if i’m not in anyones eye sight i assume i have ceased to be. finding out people remember i exist, think about me, and even talk about me when i’m not actively in front of them is startling news every time it is brought to my attention

There’s a reason lots of good parents say to babies stuff like

“You’re excited to go to the park!”

“Oh, it makes you mad that we can’t go outside.”

And then when the babies get a little bit older the parents can say

“You seem upset. Are you sad?”

“Are you excited that gramma is coming over today?”

Which lets the kid (who is learning to utilize speech) respond with yes or no, which may prompt more questions, like

“So you aren’t sad, are you angry?”

“Yes, does it make you happy when gramma is here?”

And then, finally, when the child is learning to use language in a more complex way, the parents can say,

How does it make you feel?”

Why are you feeling like that?”

And it’s all about teaching emotional awareness. I really reccomend using the process on yourself. Learn to ask, “am I happy?” “Am I sad?” “Am I anxious?”

Then practice identifying, out loud or on paper if you can, “I’m happy.” “I’m upset.” “I’m sad.” “I’m anxious.”

Final step: “Why am I feeling anxious? I’m still thinking about that awkward conversation earlier.” “Why am I happy? It’s such a beautiful day outside.” “Why am I sad? None of my friends are responding to my messages.”

It really helps you notice patterns (“I’m more likely to be happy when I’m around this person.” “When I haven’t eaten, I often feel angry.” “If I don’t plan ahead, I get anxious.”) which is the first step in avoiding things and people that are bad for you and encouraging things and people that are good.

Basically don’t forget that you’re just a baby who got more complicated.

Not sure how to articulate what you are feeling? Try starting at the middle and working your way out to the more specific feelings!

This wheel makes me feel ridiculed because I was never properly taught how to figure out how I’m feeling, and when my therapist asked me how I was feeling at the beginning of my first session with them I had no clue so they had me look at this damn wheel and I still couldn’t figure that shit out. It’s been over a year now and I’m only just figuring SOME feelings out now. T-T

Teach your kids how to identify their feelings please, or they’ll grow up and realize they’ve always been angry because of it.
