Explaining #196

On Reddit, there was a subreddit called r/196 where the only rule was that you had to post before you left. It was a successor of r/195. r/196 became a community of mostly leftist queer people with a large proportion of trans women and bisexual people, and besides a few instances, wasn't friendly to tankies, an unfortunate rarity in Reddit's leftist spaces. Reddit, in its genius, made some stupid selfish decisions resulting in moderators' ability to do their jobs getting gutted and causing Reddit on phones to be largely inaccessible to a lot of people. Thousands of subreddits decided to go private for a limited time out of protest to these changes, but a few subs would go private indefinitely until the changes were reverted, including r/196. People who still wanted the community migrated to other sites, like Tumblr.

Victoria Schwab Tweets:

“This just in: you can love writing and also find it hard.

“I was once on a panel and another author essentially said, ‘if you don't enjoy every moment, then why are you here?’ and I was...exasperated. Creativity is a complicated beast. You don't have to love every second to be a valid participant.

“I love the ideas. I love brainstorming, and problem-solving, and I love making this better, fine-tuning language.

“I also hate drafting, claw my way through self-doubt, crawl on my hands and knees through the frustration of the unrealized.

“I'm not here because I love every second.

“I'm here because the parts I love are worth the rest.”

YOU THERE! YES YOU! FIC READER!

I just read a fic from 2013 and left a comment on the end. The author responded within 3 hours.

Please leave comments on fics. It doesn't matter if you don't know what to say I literally made a joke about a space worm. Please comment on fics it'll make the authors day even if its from 9 years ago.
