🌟 New

  • In the latest version of Tumblr for Android, creating a post while visiting a tag will auto-populate your new post with that tag in the editor.
  • We’ve published our Kanvas media editing and camera library for iOS as open source! Read more about it here.

🛠 Fixes

  • The latest version of Tumblr for Android fixes an issue that was preventing edits to tags in posts.
  • Fixed an issue on web that would cause screen readers to say there were unread messages when there were none.

Open Sourcing Kanvas: Tumblr’s Media Editor and Camera

Today, Tumblr is releasing Kanvas, the Media Editor and Camera used in the Tumblr iOS app, as open-source!

Kanvas is an open-source iOS library for adding effects, drawings, text, stickers, and making GIFs from existing media or the camera. It’s used by Tumblr for it’s camera, media editor, GIF maker, and media posting tool, and WordPress will be using it in the future too!

The project is licensed under the Mozilla Public License v2. Check out the Projects tab on GitHub for an idea of what we’re working on, and how you can contribute. The README is a good place to see Kanvas in action and add it to your own app. And if you’re interested, follow the project, as we’ll be posting more documentation about how Kanvas work and the history of the project.

Thanks to everyone who’s contributed to Kanvas over the years, and we’re excited to see what this new open-source & WordPress chapter brings.

🌟 New

  • Nothing new to report today.

🛠 Fixes

  • Tumblr for iOS 16.9.1 fixes an issue where the camera turned on when it wasn’t being used. The app wasn’t actually doing anything with the camera, and the camera data never left the device or was saved anywhere.
  • Fixed an issue where you could not start new 1:1 direct messaging conversations on web.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the “Go to [blog]” link from appearing in the search typeahead on web.

I want to mourn her death. I want to honor her. I want to pay tribute to who she was as a woman, as a mother, as a lawyer, as a fighter, as a wife, as a justice, as a patriot.

I want to mourn her and celebrate her and thank her for everything that she did, all the decisions that she made that helped me grow up in an America where I was safe to pursue all the things I wanted.

Instead the first emotion I felt wasn’t sadness, or humility, or solemnity. It was fear. Chill down the spine, tears in the eyes, heart racing, muscle clenching fear.

And I will never forgive them for that.

We made this post just for you. Tell your friends. Or don’t. We’re not your boss.

Hey there!

Real quick: We made a couple of tiny tweaks to streamline posting in our mobile apps.

The first position in your mini media picker is now your catch-all camera button to add a brand new photo, video, or GIF. Speaking of GIFs,  create your own GIF using any video in your camera roll by tapping “GIF.” Select up to three seconds from your video, speed it up, slow it down, or play it in reverse.  A little less clutter, a lot more functionality.

Once you’re ready to publish, tap that “Post” button (well, duh) or long-press it to unleash a colorful cascade of options to queue, schedule, save as a draft, or post privately like it’s a special little secret only for you and you alone.

Happy posting, bud.

  • The iOS app has a new way of making GIFs from videos or Live Photos! Tap “GIF” and then “+ Create a GIF” when making a post, or swipe right on your Dashboard, to try it out (starting in version 16.7).

🛠 Fixes

  • Followed searches no longer contain very old posts on your Dashboard.
  • Blog customization in the iOS app (version 16.7) now shows you your changes after saving.
  • Changing your password in the iOS and Android apps won’t make you re-login.
  • In the web app, only blur messages from someone you don’t follow, not your own messages.

Hello! 👋 Want to stay in touch with what’s happening behind the scenes at Tumblr? @changes is our new spot for posting bite-sized, biweekly updates. Every Tuesday and Friday, we’re letting you know if there’s anything new for you to try out and listing what bugs have been squashed along the way. Like did you know on August 7, we fixed the Share to Tumblr widget? Or that as of July 28, you can add a “read more” to your posts on Android or iOS by merely typing “:readmore:”? Or that on February 30, we announced we were sending our very own Tumblr branded rocket to Mars?

Sweet, sweet transparency. Give @changes a follow and let us know what you think.

Looking forward to the inevitable parody account where every day the list is like:

  • broke the fucking thing
  • tried to fix the fucking thing, broke something else in the process
  • fixed the first thing
  • second thing’s still broken though :D :D :D
