Flames glow from old-fashioned furnaces that turn coal into coke, West Virginia, Volkmar Wentzel.
The Half Holiday, Alec home from school. Elizabeth Adela Stanhope Forbes (Canadian, 1859-1912). Oil on canvas.
On a bank in a woodland glade, his dogs obediently by his side, sits a barefoot boy (the painter’s son Alec), reading. Bright sunshine, which falls on the nearby meadow, is deflected from his page by the overhanging trees. The scene is one of peaceful concentration. The Half-Holiday conveys the intimacy and the special relationship which existed here between artist and model.
