Terrible ideas and terrible fun

Jesse makes stuff. Currently cooking up Roy Kaplan, a cyberpunk paranormal detective audio drama.

Down these mean streets a man must go...

Hello friends! Here I am, once again, to tell you about the latest project I’ve got in the works--Roy Kaplan: Out of Sight! It’s an audio drama written by me and produced by Tiny Lunar Dragon Studios (also producing Ultimate Tier List and Floodgate). We’re cooking 12 episodes, each about half an hour long, and expect to release it by the end of 2023. The format is largely episodic, with each mystery contained within its episode.

Roy Kaplan is a detective audio drama inspired by old-time radio dramas such as Richard Diamond and The Adventures of Sam Spade, but with science fiction and paranormal elements. It’s set in the cyberpunk low-key post-apocalypse future, featuring the titular Roy Kaplan, local private investigator, psychic, and retired burglar. Kaplan solves mysteries from blackmail to missing persons to murder with his quick wits, his ability to talk to ghosts, and his alarmingly good breaking and entering skills, sometimes joined by his from actual 1940 ghost roommate, Wes.

I’m writing all of it, so if you’ve ever wanted more detective stories from me, now’s your chance!

If you’re interested, follow our Roy Kaplan blog https://roykaplanpod.tumblr.com/ or check here for updates--I’ll be updating this post as production continues (check the original post if you’re seeing this in reblogs). You can also visit my website, or you can get updates at the Tiny Lunar Dragon Studios Twitter.

Our auditions are currently over, but stay tuned! Whenever we need more voice talent I’ll be posting about it on here and we’ll send out a tweet, so if you’re interested, keep your eyes open :)

Okay fuck so for like the entire first part I thought this person was like... Using one of those 3d pens to replace lace in this curtain somehow

Then the next couple I was like "wait are they just like painting the curtains a different color? Were the lace threads just black or something on that other one?"

Then finally it clicked and I freaked the fuck out

EXCUSE ME

I've been working on audio drama stuff again (taking a couple weeks break from writing race con) someone ask me questions about Roy Kaplan

okay, in celebration of progress being made on my audio drama again, time for me to get ratioed

apparently literally every other voice actor in our show pronounces wes differently than I do which is awkward when wes is the main secondary character in the series. rip me, I guess

Using red dye to demonstrate that mercury can't be absorbed by a towel

Forbidden Beverage

oh shit, really important for when I spill a whole fuckton of mercury in my kitchen. guess I'll know to grab the vacuum next time, instead of just sucking it up with a straw like a fucking peasant

I know this is a joke but also please, please do not vacuum mercury. elemental mercury in its liquid form is relatively benign because it's so poorly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract but when you vacuum it you vaporize it and elemental mercury vapor is well absorbed in the lungs, causing a bunch of respiratory problems (among other things) when you breathe it in. you can also get toxic from just leaving liquid mercury around because it evaporates and, again, gets breathed in

the EPA actually has a page about how to clean up mercury if it spills (https://www.epa.gov/mercury/what-do-if-mercury-thermometer-breaks), though not really for quite this quantity of mercury pictured here

storytime survey:

I think there's a lot of fun flavors of making characters experience consequences. here are some of them :)

I think it's fun when characters experience consequences of their actions. it makes it feel like their actions actually have weight, and sometimes you've got these actions that won't see consequences for several chapters and I think that's very tasty too because it makes it feel like the author put a lot of thought into their story

but there's definitely different times for different flavors of consequences. variety is important, too!

I think everyone needs a sweet treat every so often

"sweet drink" in this context is: a) sweet, b) cold, and c) drinkable with a straw

I had to run several errands today so I am now treating myself to sweet drink

sweet drinks! I think I deserve a sweet drink, as a treat

time for another three variable poll. you should probably read the blurb under the poll before voting.

"I like snakes" in this context means you actively like them and think they're cool and are okay with the fact that they eat rodents and other creatures the way they do. if you are ambivalent about snakes you fall into the "don't like" category

"I like tattoos" in this context means you have or would like to have tattoos on your own body (ignoring any possible difficulties with pain, needles, money, or time). if you just like how they look on other people but don't want to have one of your own you fall into the "don't like" category

y'all are on the queer website you know whether you identify as that or not

wtf does being american have to do with wanting to go on a 48 hour long train ride ???? why do americans think they’re the center of the world

I was going to put this in a follow-up post when the poll ended but the specific hypothesis I had was that americans would be more likely to want to go on a 48 hour train ride because a) america has a very prevalent road trip culture which means americans are probably more likely to be excited for an activity that involves being in a vehicle for literal days and b) the united states are large enough and the trains are slow enough that 48 hours takes you about halfway to two thirds of the way through the country instead of like. into the ocean. and to a lesser extent c) trains are less common in america so there's more of the novelty factor. it's like how british people think that a 2 hour drive is insanely long but american people think that's just a normal day trip.

I don't know why you go straight from "would you like to go on a very long train ride" divided by america vs not-america and jump straight to "americans are the center of the world". I'm pretty sure that you, presumably non-american, would also agree that americans have different culture and infrastructure with regards to transportation (and several other things).

anyways. the poll isn't over but I doubt the results will change significantly in the remaining time, so you can see that the prospect of long train rides seems to be appealing for most people, though non-americans are way more likely to say that a 48 hour train ride sounds like an awful idea or completely insane. you never know if you never ask!

I spent all afternoon cooking today so here's another survey question

for the purposes of this poll, salt and black pepper aren't considered spice
