I spent some time at Smith College learning about a program aimed at teaching students "how to fail." Why do college students need to learn failure? Well, lots of reasons, but among them researchers believe that a lack of "resilience" -- or inability to recover from some of the basic setbacks that come with college life, from being rejected from a club to bombing a quiz, along with added pressure among first-generation students who are the first in their families to attend college -- are contributing factors in alarming mental health trends on campus, including an increase in depression and anxiety.

Fun fact: Hillary Clinton carries hot sauce in her purse at all times. I had the pleasure of watching last week’s final presidential debate in Chicago with her childhood girlfriends -- the women who were there for her first political defeat (student council, their junior year, when girls were not supposed to run) and will be there with her on election day on, more than 50 years later. My piece from Sunday’s New York Times: Debate-Watching With Hillary Clinton’s BFFs

For most of 2016, to be a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton — in certain circles of Bernie Sanders-supporting progressives, anyway — was to be the square in the Lacoste shirt cast to the corner of the hipster prom.

“I was yelled at when I wore my Hillary shirt to a grocery store in West Hollywood, possibly the most ‘accepting’ neighborhood in the whole world,” said Kate Hess, a producer in Los Angeles.

“The first time I posted about Hillary, I couldn’t even function for 24 hours,” said Danielle Thomson, 34, a writer in New York. “I kept refreshing my feed — sweating.”

“I’m treated like a traitor to my generation,” said 22-year-old Patrick Ross, a playwright in Philadelphia.
