…It’s actually a damn good question…
Dusting off this account because, hey, that’s my face, and my words, and I see what I was asking being pretty grossly misconstrued, which is frustrating.
So, not that anyone will read this, but to clarify, and I tweeted basically the same thing, I wasn’t asking “Oh my god Becky! Why do you watch this shit, you sniveling tasteless asshole! Don’t you know I get to dictate what you enjoy, moron.”
I’d well, I’d be a really asshole if I tried to pull that because man, I’ve watched a lot of really questionable TV myself, and enjoyed it. I watched all of Gossip Girl and went from loathing Chuck Bass (because he tried to rape multiple girls in the pilot so like obviously I loathed him) to adoring the character and actively shipping Chair, which would be the previously loathable Chuck Bass paired with my very fave character Blair Waldorf.
What I’m saying is I’m not even going to front like I have some sort of moral highground over ANYONE.
Nah, what I was asking in this question, and make no mistake this was aimed at me just as much as anyone still watching, because I was here up until the end of S9 in this same boat, is this.
Jess and Mary’s deaths in the pilot pretty clearly set the tone for the series, and I’m treating this as a morally neutral statement in the context of this particular conversation. Then those deaths were followed by many more deaths of women. Again, for the sake of this convo I’m treating this as a morally neutral statement.
So what I was asking in the above tweets is this, the menu said they were serving broccoli. They’ve only ever served us broccoli. They serve the broccoli over and over. What I want to know is why people who actively hate broccoli, who get very upset every time they serve broccoli, keep frequenting a restaurant that has only ever served broccoli and made it very clear from the day they opened their doors that they would be serving broccoli.
I’m not saying justify yourselves to me. I’m saying why do all of us, myself included up until last year, keep getting surprised when we get broccoli.
So this wasn’t a demand that queer feminist fans justify their viewing to me, or an indictment of queer feminist fans. This was a question aimed at a very specific subset of feminist fans, myself very much included, who are angry and put off by the sexism, being seemingly surprised by the sexism every time it happens, when it was always part of the design.
