Hollywood Studios’ WGA Strike Endgame Is To Let Writers Go Broke Before Resuming Talks In Fall
Regardless of whether SAG-AFTRA goes on strike this week, the studios have no intention of sitting down with the Writers Guild for several more months.
“I think we’re in for a long strike, and they’re going to let it bleed out,” said one industry veteran intimate with the POV of studio CEOs.
While some dismiss this as just “cynical strike talk,” studio and streamer sources around town confirm the strategy. They also confirm that the plan to grind down the guild has long been in the works for a labor cycle that all sides agree is a game-changer one way or another for Hollywood.
“It’s been agreed to for months, even before the WGA went out,” one executive said. “Nobody wanted a strike, but everybody knew this was make or break.”
Receiving positive feedback from Wall Street since the WGA went on strike May 2, Warner Bros Discovery, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Paramount and others have become determined to “break the WGA,” as one studio exec blatantly put it.
To do so, the studios and the AMPTP believe that by October most writers will be running out of money after five months on the picket lines and no work.
“The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses,” a studio executive told Deadline. Acknowledging the cold-as-ice approach, several other sources reiterated the statement. One insider called it “a cruel but necessary evil.”
The studios and streamers’ next think financially strapped writers would go to WGA leadership and demand they restart talks before what could be a very cold Christmas. In that context, the studios and streamers feel they would be in a position to dictate most of the terms of any possible deal.
this is why ongoing support for strike funds is super important — taking care of each other is the only way to prevent corporations from being able to starve out their workers to force them to give in to unfair working conditions!
here's a link to donate to the entertainment community fund, which the WGA website says will assist all entertainment workers affected by the strike. if you've got spare cash, definitely consider donating!
This is why I always recommend having an emergency cheese. Mine is parmesan.
wonder woman out here still saving lives
today at work a little kid came in to order their birthday cake and their mom was like “(deep sigh) tell them what you want on your cake” and the kid was like “ELSA” and the mom was like “(deeper sigh) and?” and the kid was like “SHARKS” that kid literally ordered a princess elsa and sharks birthday cake and i have literally never in my whole life been more excited to see the end result of an order ive taken.
little kid cake orders are the BEST! one time there was like this 5 yr old girl and all she wanted was a komodo dragon themed cake…
she got it
That cake is more impressive than anything I’ve seen on any of those Fantabulosity Cakes shows, oh my god.
My cousins’ asked for Star Wars and Ballet. The person who made it really ran with the idea.
No one asked but I think the secret to making the enemies-to-lovers trip work is respect. They can loath each other, but they have to loath each other as equals. Like “sorry but no one else is allowed to murder this man but me” + “it’s an honor and privilege to despise you.”
we need ao3 back up for this person’s grandma specifically
Grandma needs to come hang out, the Austen fandom is thriving on here. Or maybe that's just my little microcosm of Austen fanatics.
common myths about migraines (AKA if you get headaches regularly, please seek treatment for migraines)
"i don't have migraines because while i get them several times a week, it's only when i am hungry or dehydrated."
those are probably migraines. thirst, hunger, sleep disturbances, or any disruption to routine are common migraine triggers.
"my headaches are specifically barometric related, i get them when the weather/altitude changes."
those are probably migraines. barometric pressure is a common migraine trigger.
"i get headaches all the time but ibuprofen gets rid of them so they can't be migraines."
that's not true. ibuprofen works great at relieving migraine pain for many people.
"my consistent headaches are tension headaches. i feel them originate in my neck/shoulders."
those are probably migraines. muscle tension is a common migraine trigger.
if you are regularly getting headaches (once a week or more), you are likely getting migraines. in fact, a good rule of thumb if you're consistently getting headaches is to treat them as migraines until you can rule out migraines. that's how common "chronic headache = migraine" actually is.
migraines are a neurological disorder wherein pain is one symptom. pain is often the MAIN symptom, and the most noticeable symptom, which can make diagnosis tricky. other symptoms of migraine include:
- fatigue
- nausea/vomiting
- digestive issues
- visual disturbances (auras)
- sensitivity to light and/or sound
- mood changes
- brain fog/cognitive changes
- ringing in the ears
- dizziness/vertigo
- numbness/weakness on one side of the body
this list is NOT complete, but is a starting point. i really like the comparison to a hangover. if you generally feel hungover when you get a headache (without having consumed alcohol), that's a classic migraine presentation.
so many people suffer from migraine and don't even know it, so they aren't able to advocate for themselves to get treatment. there are great new migraine treatments on the market! if you're able, please seek treatment for your migraines. a better quality of life is possible.
here's some more myths! brought to you by the most frequent comments i get on my migraine posts.
"but migraines are extremely painful/debilitating and i can push through my pain."
migraines certainly can be debilitatingly painful. the pain can also be mild/easily treatable. it depends on the person and it depends on the day. regardless, your ability to live with chronic pain does not mean your pain isn't a problem!
"my headaches always have a direct cause/trigger so they can't be treated/they're my fault."
wrong! migraine is a sensory disorder in many respects. most/all migraines are triggered by something. avoiding triggers is good but isn't the whole story, and migraines with triggers can be treated effectively!
"i feel pain in (x) area of my head so it's not a migraine."
migraines can hurt in a specific area of the head/one half of a person's head. but this is not universally true for every person. please forget every silly infographic you've ever seen about areas of the head equaling different kinds of headaches. that's just literally false.
Seems like this could be useful to some of y'all
I used to get bad bad “”headaches”” all the time when I was badly chronically ill that I worked through because what else was I going to do, I have to eat. And then later when I was better, I didn’t anymore. But then I started to build up into getting the bad headaches again? But now instead they start building up all the week I was ovulating? And they had weird qualities like snaking up over my skull and over into my eye, and oh hey I threw up ohhhhhh it’s a migraine oh goody I can finally justify staying home now!
And that’s how I finally got diagnosed with migraines even though my headaches were always pretty shit awful
They're currently out of stock because it's a small business but they're going to be restocked soon!
Update: I asked OP and they said around July 29th!

#if sir Walter elliot used reddit (@spookyohan)
oh my god this is me. i was addicted to designer amphetamines and completely delusional at the time of writing this. i had lost forty pounds and thought i was hot shit. i thought i was the reincarnation of Kurt Vonnegut. this was serious, and my friends laughed when they saw this go viral on twitter. it made me realize i had issues and im sober now. im also shocked i managed to stay employed at that time. To answer your question: im from LA but I grew up all around. I was living between Baltimore and NYC at the time. My mom is a beautiful Italian woman (Milan by way of Bolzano) and my dad is an insufferable Mexican from Montreal.
fwiw, my Reddit was suspended for this, im doing a lot better now, life is good, and im really happy :)
this is the most viscerally effective anti-drug PSA i've ever seen, not least because i think it's plausibly true, unlike the ones i normally see
"If stuff was just handed to me I'd have no motivation to do anything! That's human nature!" No, babe, that's depression. Psychologically healthy people are still motivated to do things even when their survival isn't being actively threatened.
[Image description: tweet by Roxi Horror @roxiqt on March 30, 2022 at 11:13 AM: “’Oh, so you think everyone should just be handed enough money to live?’ lol. lmao. yeah.”]
okay so like, we all know that housekeeping in a hotel is a Shit Job, right?
I worked with a woman who was independently wealthy. But she liked working housekeeping. So she did. And if the manager got bitchy with her, she’d just shrug and be like “Okay, I can quit.”
Like the manager treated her like a human being because she knew she had to because otherwise she’d lose one of her best workers.
Yes, everyone should be just handed the money to live.
I worked with a lady who’s husband made more than enough to support them both. She just did the retail to have something to do with herself part-time.
There’s a lot of people who’d happily do the same sort of thing. Honestly? A lot of the jobs we consider “shitty” jobs? Are shitty because the employees are treated like garbage.
If employees weren’t being screwed over by people higher up the chain constantly or being forced to kiss the asses of customers currently shitting all over them, those jobs would by and large be a whole lot more bearable, and appealing to more people!!
Plus rich people are just handed a lot of money, whether they earn it or not, and no one questions that. Only poor people getting money gets interrogated over and over and over again.
I’d like to add a footnote to this thread that the US gives more money (by way of the income tax reduction) to homeowners than it does to poor people who need subsidized housing.
My best teacher in high school was the guy who had previously made a ton of money that he could’ve retired at like 30. Man just wanted to teach teenagers.
If people as a whole were handed enough money to live on, maybe more people like him wouldn’t be put off by the poor salary teachers make. (also teachers should be paid a lot more)
There's also this assumption that if people were just handed enough money to live that they'd do absolutely nothing, as if they'd be satisfied being completely bored all the time. They'd still buy food. They'd still buy video games. They'd still go out and get coffee and put money into the economy even if they didn't want to work because they still want to LIVE. They'd buy movies. They'd go DO stuff. I review comic books on the internet and I love doing it, but I often have to compromise on some things because I just can't afford to do otherwise and I stress out about stuff because I need to earn money.
I'm disabled. If I were handed enough money to live, I would work. Because I wouldn't have to worry about the tomfuckery it plays with my benefits. Maybe I could find a job that only asked me to work as much as I'm able, not 40 hrs, and didn't penalize me. I could just...go work at an art store or frame shop for a couple of hours a day or something. We need to create jobs that are doable for people who can't do 40 or even 20 hours a week. I do not dream of labor, but I do dream of being able to have a humble profession with clear expectations and adequate compensation.
I’m also disabled and honestly, I don’t know that I could work but maybe I could like, work in a playgroup for babies a few hours a week. Or help people with world building for their writing without having to worry about income reporting (which is a trigger) or losing income and feeling really secure and comfortable.
There are, in this country, two groups of adults who (by and large) do not need to work a paying job. The wealthy, and retirees. (I’m not talking about people who are elderly but can’t afford not to work, I’m talking about people who genuinely have enough with social security and their savings that they don’t need to work.)
Most of the people who are wealthy enough not to work at a young age are still very active. A large percentage of them still have jobs! And even those who don’t have a paying job do a lot of stuff. They sit on the boards of charities, they play sports, they do stuff!
And as for retirees ... most of them are busier than they were when they were working, up until the point their health gets in the way and they can’t any more. They take care of their grandkids. They travel. They volunteer--seriously, a huge percentage of the community groups in any town or city run on retirees. Most small towns I know would cease functioning entirely if the retirees stopped volunteering.
And there used to be another large group of people who didn’t have paying work: housewives. Now, we all know that taking care of the house and kids is a really time-consuming job, but the crucial thing is that it’s more flexible than most jobs. And those women not only did all that housework and childcare, they also volunteered in a wide variety of social groups. That had a huge impact on society that we haven’t really ever studied to my knowledge.
The only group of adults I know of who a) don’t have paying work and b) don’t do other stuff are the people who can’t because they’re disabled.
The issue isn’t that people won’t work. It’s that the ‘shit’ jobs won’t be able to treat them like shit and still have employees, if nobody’s choosing between that job and homelessness.
and if there aren't enough people to do essential jobs (like garbage collection or cleaning up biohazards) for the satisfaction of the work itself, there'll be enough people who will pitch in out of a sense of responsibility, satisfaction in helping with something so important - esp if it's not full time hours
I don't love cleaning so much I'd get a housekeeping job if I were rich, but in a better world, I'd be willing to give a few hours a weekw keeping public spaces scrubbed & tidy, or washing other people's dishes, if otherwise it'd become unfairly burdensome to people who clean for the joy of it
I'm doing literally the same thing now as I was doing on unemployment benefits. I'm paid for it now. I wasn't then. Me doing it hasn't changed.
“If there aren’t enough people to do essential jobs(like garbage collection or cleaning up biohazards)”
The gas of it is, there’s generally always always enough people willing to be garbage collectors. You know why? It’s generally a pretty well paid government position with benefits that you don’t need extra schooling for—it’s like an old-school Boomer job that has somehow survived.
But women-coded labor gets devalued, so people with jobs cleaning often get paid for shit because “everyone knows how to clean”(lol. lmao.) and yet garbage collection????? Would not be????? Like I will talk up garbage collectors all day, our ability to not get sick as a society is more to do with them and modern plumbing than anything the medical system is doing, but when capitalism acts like that’s any different is………something

THINGS I NEED TO FUCKING KNOW: Why every fuckin trans man or nb person I know who binds is like “oh binders are the worst, you can’t breathe in them, I know someone who broke a rib once”,
And meanwhile over in historical costuming, we are fucking eating, sleeping, swordfighting, riding horses, and feeling great like this:
(credit: Jenny La Flamme, The Tudor Tailor, Verdaera)
Like is there NO overlap between people who want to bind and people who care about accurate 16th century clothing reconstruction techniques?
(I, okay, maybe it is kind of a niche interest, but…. REALLY? Anyone who’s made a boned binder, PLS SPEAK TO ME)
Omigods yes that’s what I used to make my trial binding corset for under a 1830′s gentleman’s costume! I adapted the Elizabethan Pattern Generator Corset to look more like the gentleman’s corset of the time as portrayed in satirical cartoons.
This was only the second pair of stays I made, but it already made me practically flat and was quite comfortable. I didn’t even full bone it and it looked like this:
(don’t judge me for the awful way the boning sticks out at the top, I am by no means a corsetry expert)
People who are actually good at stays will be able to make things like these with no trouble, because if something made from old sheets and recycled boning can do this, imagine what you can do with proper materials.
Just for fun, here’s me in my gentleman’s outfit:
It basically eliminates my boobs, but leaves the hips alone because at that time the hourglass silhouette was fashionable for men as well. I’m not exactly flat-chested, so I’d say for a first attempt this one is very succesful.
…okay, was anyone going to tell me that gentlemen’s corsets were A Thing or did I just have to learn that in a random reblog myself
they absolutely make corsets for men and they turn me a bit ravenous every time

Before Steven was born Amethyst used to say ‘fuck’ all the time & so when he was a baby Greg had to sit her down and explain that she has to stop swearing around Steven because he’s young & impressionable
So Amethyst is like “but that’s my favourite word, when will be stop being young & impressionable so I can say it again??”
And Greg is like “uhh I don’t know, 15 I guess? 15 is probably old enough”
“Got it”
flash forward to Steven’s fifteenth birthday and he is woken at dawn by Amethyst yelling “wake the FUCK up Steven it’s FUCKING TIME”
& he spends the entire day losing his mind
Steven: w-what’s happening
Garnet: *deadpan* Amethyst just got her favourite word back
Amethyst: *running around the house* FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
Greg: what’s going on
Amethyst: you said once Steven was 15 I could say fuck again
Greg, who only hazily recalls the conversation in question: ……i DID?
Amethyst: *runs outside* FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK *distant sounds of spooked birds*
Pearl: Steven the *whispering* F-word is a bad word that Amethyst USED to say before-
Steven: I know what fuck means Pearl
Amethyst: *stopping dead in her tracks* WHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATT??
Pearl: who taught you that word mister!!
Steven: um… Lars and Sadie… *mumbling* five years ago…
Amethyst: I’ve been denying myself my favourite word for FIVE YEARS for NOTHING??
Greg: uh even if he knows what it means it’s still not really appropriate for you t-
Amethyst: *running outside* FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCK
Steven: …
Greg: …
Pearl: …
Garnet: …*quietly* fuck
Everyone else: O_O
Garnet: what. I missed it too
also Amethyst made a banner that says HAPPY FUCKING BIRTHDAY STEVEN in very large writing
Connie: what’s going on
Steven: Amethyst is allowed to say fuck now
Connie: oh! are we all allowed to say fuck now??
Greg & Pearl in unison: NO!!
Peridot: what’s fuck
Short explanation of what the hell the Luffy tab on top of the dashboard is:
- For some reason the tumblr marketing team decided to make a deal with Netflix to promote the new live action One Piece movie with a site wide tab, instead of like... An ad.
- The Tab started with the name Luffy, the protagonist of the series. It has now changed to Zoro. There's not explanation given but I suspect it's in the order of the One Piece rap
- The tab seems to be very broken, only showing 5-7 posts that were posted months ago. The users who's art and posts have been included were not asked permission to be used in an ad campaign.
- The disclosing of this being an ad has also been suspect, with many only finding out through word of mouth rather than the tab telling it. I'm not a lawyer but I think that's at least skirting a crime.
- The popular reccomendation is to not engage with the tab, because it'll encourage tumblr to pull more stunts like this. Their sponsors will be delighted the more you click, no matter if its out of confusion or not.
This whole thing is a mess and I hate how marketing teams are trying to bypass adblockers by making alternative ads that get people talking. The act of me posting this is what they want and I'm enraged.... Still, uh, I want to spread the info we've gathered as a community. Let me know if you find more or something is incorrect.
Ps. dont attack one piece fans, they didn't know this was gonna happen either. Please dont leave weird comments to the posts in the tab, the OPs are not involved.
