Spending my adult time and money on silly trifles in the hope of finding some fleeting moment of joy.
Avatar

I have spent the past month preparing to move house (all moved in today, yay!), and although it's been stressful and tiring, it has at least distracted me from the birthday angst I'd usually be going through this time of year.

The birthday is tomorrow, and it'll be my first full day back in my beloved Sheffield, so I think I'm just going to spend the day enjoying the city - a gallery visit, the cinema with the reclining seats and foot stools on the front row, street food for lunch, and maybe check out a new comic shop that's apparently opened recently.

I'll be seeing my family on Saturday - they all went to a car boot sale yesterday so I kind of suspect it'll be another year of hopeless gifts, but for once I'm not massively concerned. I'm just so happy to be back home after four years.

Blond Sweetheart Tourney: Round 1, Poll 47

Propaganda from submitters Under Cut

Richard. Richaaaaaard. Richard, light of my life, spark of my soul.

Richaaaaaard.

The man who refuses to judge anyone who walks through his door. Lesbian? Absolutely. Trans? No problem. Kidding yourself because a guy dumped you? Shhh, believe in yourself. Aroace? That's fine; if you don't want to be in a relationship, don't be. In love with your stepmother? He doesn't care at all.

Don't buy something from him? That's good, too.

But lie to someone? Play with their feelings? Cheat and scam people? Get read to be scammed back, you jerks.

The man who nearly fired his employee for accidentally othering a lesbian in his own head. The man who waited 12 hours outside a train station just in case his employee got his feelings hurt so he could comfort him after.

A guy who gave a classmate an international plane ticket just because as a kid. Who cried for hours when his childhood dog died.

Richard is the sweetest, kindest, most awkward man, and he deserves more votes.

And now, this.

He taps his feet when eating pudding, y'all.

why do people in the uk who make those nostalgia bait videos act like we don’t have collared doves any more?

Wait, collared dove calls are being used to evoke nostalgia in videos? The birds that famously can't be used for wild-tracks in past-setting British media because they've only been here since the mid-1950s?

in fairness it’s nostalgia for growing up in the 90s and 00s so it is likely that the target audience would have heard them before @jenatwork

I am sorry to everyone who tagged me in some tag game and I never responded. I saw it and thought “aww they thought of me” and proceeded to forget about it right after

Watching some of the supplements to the pink flamingos criterion and this performer in the movie, Elizabeth Coffey was pre-op while filming, and if you’ve seen the movie you know she famously or infamously exposes herself on camera. Fast forward 50 years to a retrospective of John waters in 2022 in a Baltimore art museum, and I guess they’d made their bathrooms gender neutral somewhat recently and also named the bathrooms after John waters. So John invited Elizabeth Coffey who is also still alive and an advocate for trans seniors to come and be the first person to piss in their newly gender neutral bathrooms lol which seems like a very John waters thing to do lol

Here they are at the bathrooms lol

people misunderstand what ‘gifted kid’ actually means but it’s ok it’s fine it’s cool it’s good

it’s not about actually being gifted, it’s about an initial higher scoring on standardized testing that means little to nothing or being good at learning in the way elementary and middle school wants you to, so you get marked as ‘advanced’. in reality, maybe you had faster development in certain areas, but the issue with being a gifted kid isn’t that “everyone told me I was so cool and special for reading and then I actually wasn’t :(” it’s “I wasn’t properly taught to handle things not coming easily to me, but the adults around me were counting on me not being a ‘difficult’ child in school.”

people who use it as some weird bragging method or interpret it that way are ignoring the way a lot of school systems force certain roles on students to simplify the learning process. If your kid doesn’t need to take notes to understand a science concept bc they get it naturally, well that’s good, but now you’re not teaching them how to take notes and they’re not learning that important soft skill. but because ‘gifted’ kids are easy and don’t show that they’re falling behind in learning in other categories that are harder to quantify, they eventually fall behind after that catches up to them. It’s about the failures of a one size fits all school system trying to compensate in the worst way possible.

And also the thing where ‘gifted’ kids are super likely to also be neuroatypical, which they don’t get screened for because they appear to be doing well in school. Or “You can’t be ADHD/autistic/etc, because you’re doing so well in school!”. Or being shamed for developing mental health issues/generally not being able to keep up with school work later, because you USED TO BE able to do it just fine.

Or the assumption that just because you can read well or you like math class, you’re somehow more EMOTIONALLY mature than your little kid brain is actually capable of being.

Or gifted kids whose parents and teachers put immense pressure on them to Do Great Things and Save The World and you’re like. “I’m 10 and I have no idea how to do that, but everyone is saying that’s my job?”.

This is the best “gifted kid” post out there. I never took notes until college because I didn’t have to, snd when it got challenging I had to literally teach myself note taking at age 18. It also fucks with your perception of asking for help - you’re advanced, you’re competent, you should be able to understand every topic easily. Asking for help/going to office hours/asking for a tutor feels like failing when you were praised in your early years for not needing to do that.

interesting how transmascs & transfems alike think losing weight is the answer to pass as our chosen gender.... almost as if fat people are never Truly afforded a passing gender regardless of trans status. as fat people we are never Truly seen as Men or Women. anyway fuck that notion & if u think u need to lose weight to pass that's the devil talking

i'd also like to point out that this is a problem with people seeking to present androgynously. even androgyny must be skinny in the eyes of the world. in order to even be a person outside of gender, you mustn't be fat

i want fat nb folks to know that you aren't any less of a person or any less androgynous for being fat

To be fat, in white societies, is to be inherently de-gendered - fat women aren't 'worthy women' because they're not considered fuckable, fat men aren't 'worthy men' because they're considered unathletic/lacking in self-control, fat enbies are just 'seeking attention' because androgeny is supposed to be thin and they're just pretending because they failed at their assigned gender.

If you're fat, you're only considered passable if you make extra effort to perform your assigned gender. Fat women get a pass if they do the busty lipsticked pin-up girl thing, or they're motherly and once again unfuckable. Fat men get a pass if they're wealthy in a good suit, if they're a beer-drinking funny guy, or a muscle-chubby type. Fat enbies barely get a pass anywhere, and even then it's if we do the quirky-cute creative thing, but we can't be too quirky because then we're freaky and freaky is barely a step away from perverted or disgusting.

Fat people are, as far as thin people see us, our fatness before we're anything else. And we shouldn't let their obsession with our fatness get in the way of living our lives, or expressing our gender.

So are we going to talk about the new Baseball Haru who is actually called Haru, but isn't voiced by Swimming Haru because Swimming Haru is voicing Baseball Rei, and Swimming Rin is voicing Baseball Nagisa, and how this isn't yet a real sports anime because Hosoya Yoshimasa isn't voicing anyone (yet)?

britain is great because sometimes people will be angrier that alison hammond is presenting a TV show about dogs than they are about 99% of the other stuff that goes on in this country on a daily basis
