hello :) do you have a summary or points on why MBTI isn't bullshit? so I can easily remember it in case I need to explain it to people. hehe. please and thanks

Avatar

My Te feels like answering this, so it may not be as in depth as you want (Te tends to get to the point with a WELL DUH answer).

MBTI is a theory on cognitive processes – it forms a type based on how your mind processes and organizes external information.

Is it bullshit?

People-experience says no. Just look around you.

Have you never wondered why you do not get along with ‘certain kinds’ of people? Or why that person made that decision, which to you seems totally insane? Or why you just ‘click’ with someone once in awhile?

Could it be that you ‘understand’ the way they think? Or do not understand someone else?

Why does THAT person struggle to share their feelings, while THAT one shares their feelings all the time? Why is THIS person a human processing machine and THAT person seems totally driven by their emotions?

MBTI just explains how your brain works. That’s it. Often, those that scoff at or doubt MBTI fail to understand this – it is not the answer to everything, it is not a big deal except that it gives you insight into how your mind (and others’ minds) work – hopefully, so you have greater tolerance for people not like you; it is not a horoscope that will dictate your future; it is a hard-drive upon which YOU get to upload software that makes you unique from every other person who has your type.

The Worst Nightmare of Each Type

INFJ - Realizing that the cause they have been supporting is run by treacherous and immoral people. Any good they’ve ever done in the world is instantly erased and turned into something harmful. Everyone they care for believes they are cruel and heartless.

ENFJ - Everything they do continuously comes out wrong, and the more they try to fix it the worse it becomes. Every person they try to help somehow ends up worse off than before, and they are seen as the reason why everything is going wrong.

INFP - Being trapped in a crowded room with morally bankrupt people, and having to coexist with them. Not being allowed to express their emotions, or process anything alone. Being forced to watch injustices and not being able to stop them or express how wrong they are.

ENFP - They no longer can speak to other people, and are forced to be silent at all times. Their ability to express themselves and be creative has been taken from them. Because of this the world sees them are uncaring and unfriendly. They aren’t allowed to explore new possibilities and must maintain a strict schedule.

INTJ - Being forced to listen to people spread incorrect information, and those people are revered as geniuses. They are unable to speak out against anyone who is wrong, and are actually made to agree with them. Every emotion they have ever felt is transmitted in public and everyone sees them as emotional and incapable of intelligent thought.

ENTJ - Being forced to comply with someone else’s poorly developed plan. They have no ability to stand out or add insight to the plan, and when all is said and done everyone believes they are the reason things are going wrong. They constantly have to listen to others emotional problems, and have to sympathize with them.

INTP - They are forced to follow the lead of an ignoramus, whose only goal is to feed lies to the masses. They aren’t allowed to explore new possibilities, and everyone around them is incapable of accuracy. Because of this, they have to watch the people they care about fall victim to these falsities. They are mocked for their thoughts and emotions.

ENTP - Is forced into solitary confinement, where they are never allowed to debate anything ever again. They have to constantly listen to people discussing vapid topics with no intelligent discussion involved. Creative thought is banned.

ISTJ - They have to wake up each morning not knowing what will happen that day. They aren’t allowed to plan and have to live in a constantly messy and cluttered environment. Each day is filled with unknowns, and they aren’t given instructions until moments before they have to do something.

ESTJ - They are forced to follow the orders of a messy and unorganized fool. No one around them is allowed to listen to their commands, and they are forced to keep them to themselves. They are seen by everyone as incapable and weak.

ISFJ - Everywhere they go it seems like everyone is unhappy and fighting. Every time they try to stop the arguing, they are verbally attacked and everything wrong they have ever done is brought to light. Everything around them is a mess and every-time they try to organize they are yelled at and forced to stop.

ESFJ - They aren’t allowed to express caring towards others, and are seen as cold and inconsiderate. They know that their loved ones are in danger, but they are completely powerless to stop it. Every-time they do try to fix the problem or make things better, it just keeps getting worse. Because of this they are left forever alone and are abandoned by their loved ones.

ISTP - They are forced to sit in a room and listen to intellectually moribund people try to solve a problem. As they watch these people attempt to put something together, they are unable to help or say a word.

ESTP - They are incapable of feeling excitement, and must sit alone in a room all day long. There are no reading materials or things to keep them busy, just their own thoughts.

ISFP - They are forced to live with people who are rude, and make them live each day based on a strict schedule. They are constantly criticized and there is no one around that cares enough to step in and stop it.

ESFP - The world breaks out with a terrible sickness, and the only way to survive is by staying inside and avoid all social engagements until the end of time.

URGENT

I’m honestly in tears. I am incredibly upset, I am shaking, I am furious. I need this post to reach as many people as possible, because I want everyone to be aware about this and we need to work together to help bring this young girl home safely. I have a lot of followers so I’m hoping this will spread quickly so more people are aware of this.

This is Kennedi High. You may have seen her circling through your dashboard. She’s 16 years old and she has gone missing, and so far everyone has pieced together through her snapchat story that something is really, really wrong. She’s acting funny, and recently her snapchat story has been updated: “I’m with this other man and he telling me I’m never going back home to see my family.” A lot of people think this may be a case of sex trafficking, and it most likely is, and I’m honestly terrified for her.

She’s originally from Baltimore, MD, though it’s said that she may currently be in the Mountain View California region. Please spread this if you can, reblog any other posts you find about her and get this story out. I’m absolutely sickened and shaken and I just want her to be safe. This is so important to me.

Not to mention, there’s been reports of over 64,000 black girls missing across the United States, and it’s most likely due to sex trafficking. 64,000 black girls. That’s just crazy. This is terrifying and needs more media coverage, this needs to be spread everywhere. We need to protect black girls. They need our help.

If you guys have any more information to add to this post or correct, please please feel free. I’ll try to add any other updates I find on the situation. In the meantime, if you can, please this reblog or any other posts relating to Kennedi and spread the word. Tell everyone about it. This needs everyone’s attention.

INTJ: If it weren’t for my religion I would be such a bad person. I’d probably become a criminal because I’d break into places just for the challenge.

ENFP: For such a nice person, you really can be intimidating, INFJ. Yeesh. *hands phone back to her*
INFJ: /Thank/ you.
INFJ: ... Why did you text INTP 'I must profess my undying love to you or I will implode'?!
ENFP: Well... You guys are just so /cute/ together! *smiles dreamily* Especially how he blushes whenever I bring you up.
INFJ: *sighing* ENFP, that's just because you keep bugging him about us becoming a couple. Which, by the way, is NOT happening.

ENFP: No, silly! By asking INTP who /he/ ships you with! *snatches INFJ's phone*
INFJ: Hey! Give that back!
ENFP: *gleefully* Nope.
ENTP: Just, ask him already!
ENFP: Alright, alright. *starts typing*
ENFP: ...Aaand, I sent it.
ENTP: *to INFJ* Okay, he's typing... And he says...
ENFP: Oh. My. Gosh. ENTP, read it aloud so that INFJ can hear what he responded!
ENTP: *reddening* No.
INFJ: You guys are being ridiculous! *snatches the phone back* And he said...
INFJ: *glances at ENTP* Oh.
ENFP: *mockingly* "Personally, I think that ENTP would be most compatible with INFJ."
INFJ: ...
ENTP: ...
INFJ: Bye now. *runs away*

Hey guys so recently I read a article about Sheldon’s body personality research. It’s basically a cool study showing how sometimes people with similar personalities have similar body types. I thought I would conduct my own survey with mbti types and their physical appearance!

I’ll post results once I get a good amount of response. Please take the survey and reblog!

Alright the responses are coming in wonderfully!!! But I still don’t have quite enough. I need more from every type! I’m getting a pretty steady amount of INTJs but more is always better! Please take this quick survey and reblog!

Again thanks to all who took it so far! (And thanks for the funny comments) 🙌

Typing Issues from the Perspective of an INTJ

SUBMITTED by ecoreader

The biggest problem, currently, with the Myers Briggs Indicator is that it’s a marketable product, monetized by a for-profit corporation, in a climate of positive thinking. It’s a Kool-Aid that needs to be consumed for the product to catch on, so it needs to taste good to most consumers. As such, there’s a tendency to hyperbolize all the types: not just to turn them all into paragons of their dominant functions, but also to emphasize weaknesses that won’t bother them. FPs are all extremely sensitive souls, FJs are all painfully empathetic, TPs are random and impulsive, and TJs are sociopathic no-nonsense bulldozers; and all this is fine, because these are the weaknesses that they want to see in themselves.

For example, I’m always very amused by the INTJ type descriptions on sites like 16personalities:

“It’s lonely at the top, and being one of the rarest and most strategically capable personality types, INTJs know this all too well. INTJs form just two percent of the population, and women of this personality type are especially rare, forming just 0.8% of the population – it is often a challenge for them to find like-minded individuals who are able to keep up with their relentless intellectualism and chess-like maneuvering. People with the INTJ personality type are imaginative yet decisive, ambitious yet private, amazingly curious, but they do not squander their energy.”

-          16Personalities.com

How special it makes us feel! Rare and intelligent, but also sensitive to the insular nature of our existence! Both clearly and naturally dominant, but also somehow a misunderstood underdog. The Barnum effect ensures that we identify strongly with whichever of these two we find more apropos, and then we take the rest and run with it. This is great when using MBTI casually, because it ensures a quick fix; but the longer you stay with it, the longer it starts to fall apart. Because the real weaknesses aren’t truly addressed, types get conflated and confused and mistyping is all but inevitable. To use a personal example, this resulted in me doubting my type for well over a year (even if by process of elimination it was still the one that fit best). In fact, I only ever got over my uncertainty when I read the Socionics description for ILI:

“The mind of an ILI is an oasis of sorts where knowledge is treated as a toy or even a vehicle that allows them to visit complex mental landscapes that are shaped and continually revised by new information. Nonetheless, an ILI is likely to find the process of accumulating new information tiresome and requiring too much of their energy; consequently, new information is often accumulated and updated in a rather lethargic, periodic, and occasionally incomplete fashion.”

-          Sociotype.com

Aha! Inferior Se, obvious and on display for all the world to see! Obvious dominant Introverted Perceiving! No overemphasis on the more socially acceptable aspects of Te! Negative connoted words, ones that will actually bother an INTJ, right there in the second paragraph; after all, being overly aggressive and analytical is fine on an intellectual level, but being lazy? Being unable to actually enact change in the physical world? That’s unbearable. Worse yet, the suggestion that Ni is fallible when it doesn’t have access to enough information brings back memories of all the times we were wrong, stupidly, because we overlooked something obvious.

Typing oneself, as has been mentioned before by better writers than me, is about pain. When you look at your inferior function, it shouldn’t be with a smile (”Lol, yeah, this is totally me”), it should be with a grimace. To address INxJs directly: Inferior Se isn’t about lack of kinesthetic intelligence, much like MBTI has nothing to do with intelligence on the whole. Inferior Se is lack of a certain type of willpower, the inability to maintain a strong presence in the physical realm for long periods of time or to deal with rapidly evolving situations. Anyone can be bad at sports, or clumsy; that has nothing to do with type. Low Se is about being physically inconsistent, much like low feeling is about being emotionally inconsistent and low thinking is about logical inconsistency.

INTJ Weaknesses Examined

According to 16personalities.com, INTJs display the following weaknesses:

Arrogant Judgmental Overly analytical Loathe highly structured environments Clueless in romance As an INTJ myself, I will try to discuss these different weaknesses and expand on it, adding on to other weaknesses INTJs have.

Arrogant – INTJs tend to be arrogant, especially at the earlier stages of their life when their exposure to more intelligent groups is limited. Once they find more intelligent peers (if they don’t, they will likely remain arrogant for the rest of their life), the INTJ will respond in one of two ways. The INTJ will humble themselves, and stop treating others as if they are much more superior, and will only consider themselves superior in the regards they know themselves to be (which may be most things still). Or they will deny the discrepancies to keep their ego intact, losing themselves into worlds where they are superior, leading to them developing issues such as workaholism or gaming addictions. INTJs even have books on the link between their type and narcissism too. INTJs will be inwardly arrogant, but they won’t directly tell you how much better they consider themselves to be than you. Unless the INTJ is younger/more immature, they would rather imply it passive-aggressively or not imply anything at all. Why risk having ego damaged?

Judgmental – Less developed INTJs tend to assume a lot, because their dominant introverted intuition has subconsciously analyzed many different patterns before, although the problem is that it may be an incomplete analysis. This leads to intuition that is unrefined and prone to being wrong, especially with more complex situations like those involving people matters. It’s akin to learning the mechanisms of a pond before stumbling upon a river and finding out the same principles don’t apply. The problem with this is that INTJs apply their auxiliary extroverted thinking too soon when it comes to matters that they think they already have a firm understanding of, when they would be better off making sure that they know all the details before making a judgement. This could easily apply for many personality types, but can be particularly troublesome with an obstinate INTJ who is convinced that their understanding is correct as it is.

Overly Analytical – INTJs tend to over analyze a lot of things which is helpful within the logical realm of theories and ideas but it falls short when applied to the real world, especially with people. Not every human act can be explained easily, and this will annoy the INTJ who wants an explanation for why things happen. This can also lead to quick judgements to relieve themselves of the pressure of finding out the real reason behind an act, or the possibility that there was no big reason.

Loathe highly structured environments – Contrary to what most would expect, INTJs tend to actually heavily dislike school. INTJs like learning a lot, but they would rather direct their own education rather than having a separate body telling them what they need to learn. The added factor of socialization within the school environment is also painful as it serves as just another distraction from their learning, forcing them to learn how to navigate the politics of multiple people being involved in a structure. However, just because many INTJs dislike school, this doesn’t mean that they won’t play the “game” and try to win by getting the best scores possible. For INTJs, their future vision of what they can accomplish by winning the “game” fuels their desire to withstand adversity. However, the weaker their vision as a result of completing a task, the less likely they are to invest time within it. This is also applicable for most people, but especially amplified for the INTJ who spends most of their time in their head.

Clueless in Romance – For the younger INTJs, this is especially true. They will have no idea when anyone is interested. But after being caught off-guard a few times, they become acutely aware of when people are interested in them. However, after that, the INTJ is practically clueless. Their humor is very different from most other types, their flirting is abysmal, talking can be a chore at times and they aren’t often aware of social cues and people’s feelings. It can be a disaster without an understanding partner that doesn’t judge immediately or without strong personal growth from the INTJ. As INTJs are less than 2% of the population, it may not be a surprise that this type is not in abundance.

My additions:

Weirdly Emotional – This depends on whether the INTJ has a “hot” or “cool” personality. The INTJs with a cool personality tend to remain more detached and analytical while the hot INTJs will be more in tune with their emotions. This can lead to them feeling emotions more greatly but also arising poorly, leading to an emotional reaction that is often more than it should be. INTJs with hot personalities tend to have more associations with their tertiary introverted feeling. Whether any personality type is hot or cool also seems to be more associated with their enneagram type.

Just Weird – INTJs spend a lot of their time in their head or on the computer/phone gathering information. For someone who is generally very detached from the world, this can lead to them developing a very niche personality that will deviate greatly from the norm of the social groups they have access to. Pair that with their natural unwillingness to talk to many people, they can become very closed off from others and hide their real selves as a result. They can fear showing what they really think due to being ridiculed, although it prevents them from finding out who would actually appreciate those thoughts too.

Self-Doubting – INTJs are so self-doubting about themselves, they are the most likely out of all the types to try researching their own weaknesses. They have to know what’s wrong with them and how they can get better. This self-doubt can be transparent when they speak because they are willing to show their level of certainty or lack of it, which can come off poorly in the workplace and in relationships because other types would prefer certainty in their explanations.

Too Serious – Younger INTJs often don’t know when people are joking, at least immediately. They will generally take many things at face value because of how often they take themselves seriously within their own thoughts. INTJs have high opinions of themselves in relations to others, “armor up” for social interactions and are constantly analyzing what people are saying, all of which leads to their solemn outlook when dealing with the external world.

INTJs have a lot of work to do when it comes to their weaknesses, but a well-rounded and mature INTJ will generally become a powerful force to be reckoned with if they are able to master these weaknesses.

The Truth About INTJs

Being an INTJ on the internet means constantly being bombarded by assumptions about your type. Sometimes their meant to be funny, sometimes they’re unfair, and sometimes they’re scrambling to undo the damage the unfair ones have done. In this post I’m going to try to explain how the stereotypes about INTJs are true, and how they are false, without trying to paint them (us) as devils, or overcompensating and depicting us as saints.

There are several key characteristics of an INTJ that produce results that are often confusing to people with more normal emotional and rational processes. If you’re familiar with the enneagram, you can start there. To my knowledge INTJs almost always have type 5 in their enneagram tritype somewhere. In addition they tend towards either higher type 1 or higher type 8. Basically this comes together to create a personality that is motivated to be rational, reasonable, and in control. The INTJ wants to approach things practically and avoid things like other people and their own emotions influencing their rational approach.

Unfortunately for INTJs they are also extremely sensitive. Like ISTJs they lead with an introverted perceiving function and have a tertiary Introverted feeling, but unlike ISTJs they don’t learn to deal with “how the world works” as quickly. Ni/Fi is an extremely fragile pair of introverted functions that cares deeply about things that a lot of people don’t even notice. INTJs tend to take things very seriously and can get very upset when things don’t go as planned. The world is a scary place for an INTJ, who just wants to sit back and figure things out before being thrown into the fray. Of course in real life, the fray comes to you. And then INTJs get hurt, a lot. They get thrown into situations that they aren’t comfortable with, and forced to figure things out as we go, which for younger INTJs with lower self confidence and esteem, is a recipe for disaster.

This is were the rational, reasonable, and in control, part comes in. INTJs, like anyone else, hate being hurt emotionally. Unlike most people however, they don’t just hope for things to get better, they approach  the problem with pragmatism. Opening up to people tends to get you hurt? They’ll avoid everyone. People say mean things? They’ll hone their sarcasm to defend themselves. Trying to do anything interesting often ends in failure? They’ll just stay in their room. INTJs are so irritated by the feeling of helplessness that a tough situation brings that they would often rather abandon friendships, activities, and social interaction in general, then feel stuck were they are powerless to defend themselves from a frightening and confusing world.

I know quite a few INTJs, eight, including myself. Some of them seem more typical, they can be reclusive and socially awkward, but some are very well adjusted people. The main factor that I think has improved the health of the INTJs that I know is a good home life growing up, and often, homeschooling. I’ve been home-schooled all my life and I loved every minute of it. I don’t know about high school, but I don’t think I would be the same person I am today, if I hadn’t been home-schooled as a child. With most kids you need to let them do things on their own and be adventurous a bit, but for me that would have been a disaster. I would have most likely gotten stressed and taken it out on everyone around me (like a stereotypical evil INTJ) Now however, during my senior year in high school, I’m actually about as socially confident as other kids my age, sometimes more so. I now feel comfortable navigating things that used to bother me, simply because I was given the chance to figure them out at my own pace.

INTJs are weird and complicated. You can’t treat them exactly like other types and expect the same results (as illustrated by my six year old self taking a “time out” as a reasonable trade for hitting my sister over the head.) We want to be given the time to get comfortable with new, scary things and if you let us do it at our own pace, you’ll never have to see another stereo-typically cynical, sarcastic and brooding INTJ ever again.

INTJ gothic

 - one by one, every real and fictional character you thought was an INTJ is pronounced mistyped. you begin to wonder if INTJs are real. that’s probably exactly what they want you to think. how much longer until they come for you

 - you have a big project you’re working on. all your moments of clarity for this project come at inconvenient times. you haven’t eaten or slept in days. you didn’t even realize that until just now

 - that one class is much more challenging than you expected. you suspect the worst, but you don’t want to voice your concern, because you know once you say it you’ll have to admit it’s true. and you can’t bring yourself to accept the consequences of the fact that your professor is a fellow INTJ and you are an idiot in the subject they teach

 - you have a theory for everything. everything except whatever your friends are asking you about. how is it that every single time they manage to find those rare things on which you don’t have a theory

 - you’ve been here before. you have stories to tell. you find yourself unable to tell them, because you are future oriented and give no thought to what has already occurred. memories clearly only float around your mind to attack your rare type status and make you an ISTJ

 - there is discourse somewhere in the room. you do not want to be part of the discourse. someone is leaning over the back of their chair and inserting judiciously timed comments that all start with “but the real question is” or “you know what I just realized the other day?” you are a little disturbed to find that person is you, but what can you do about it now? it will always happen this way

 - you appear to be in perfect health, but still you cannot see, touch, taste, smell, or hear at the level of an average person. in fact, the only sensation you experience is getting drunk every time someone is wrong, and people are always wrong

 - you know you’re right, you just know it. every other INTJ also knows they’re right. all of you disagree. the universe is tearing itself apart with all these contradictory realities occurring at once. which, by the way, is another plot twist you totally called

 - every time you have a new obsession, you start seeing it everywhere. your current obsession is disaster stories. this must mean something, but do you really want to know? (of course you do, you sadistic nerd)

 - the only ones who truly understand you are your cats and your drafts folder. maybe they understand you a little too well. especially that one cat

As an INTJ with a terrible habit of second-guessing myself that damages my productivity, is that a possible symptom of underdeveloped inferior Se (as in, a lack of the "think fast" "just do it" mentality)?

Avatar

I’m sorry this is super late, I was dusting off my old asks and saw you and remembered I like you, so I’m gonna give this a shot *cracks knuckles*

INTJs second guess themselves a LOT due to two functions that go hand-in-hand: Dominant Ni and Inferior Se. So in a way you are correct!

Dominant Ni gives on an ideal image in mind– we know what perfection looks like, and we know what we have done is not it. So we hesitate, we doubt ourselves, we question if what we have done is really good enough. We lack the skill in Se that leads us to action, that gives us just the right impulsivity to DO something instead of holding back all actions for the sake of perfecting it. And yes it absolutely DESTROYS productivity. If you let it get too out of control, you’ll find you haven’t accomplished much at all, which will continue to kill your self-esteem and confidence (because Te would really love to get shit done!)

To beat this you have to prevent your dominant function from becoming too toxic and remind yourself that nothing you do will be “perfect”. You have to build the confidence to stop second-guessing yourself, and the only way to do that is put yourself out there and give yourself the chance to succeed. I know that we are afraid to fail– though they do not like to admit it, INTJs are terrified of failure. But a lack of productivity WILL inevitably lead to failure, so you have to take the leap at some point. You will fall sometimes, and you will succeed other times–but after so many times of success, you will build confidence and stop doubting yourself so much. At that point you really start to make a lot of progress as you take more and more action. The best you can do is try to put the best possible work out there as you can at the best pace you can– and keep in mind that occasional failure is natural and inevitable for everyone.
