No but seriously are teachers not taught to notice neurodivergence or what because it genuinely seems like my entire education (ESPECIALLY in elementary school) SOMEONE should have picked up the obvious ADHD and autism but they all just viewed me as either "stupid and malicious devil child" or "gifted prodigy, possibly the next Messiah" which looking back was an insane way for adults to be treating a small child

Like my parents shouldn't shoulder any blame for not noticing things that were symptoms, they grew up with those same symptoms! They assumed their experiences were the default! But how could an outsider looking in, with their whole career being centered around developmental education, see a hyperlexic child who can't snap their fingers, tie their shoes, or distinguish left from right, and think "That child is deliberately disobeying me" or "This kid is gonna solve climate change" like I LITERALLY WAS A TEXTBOOK CASE WHY DIDN'T ANYONE SEE IT.

Genuine answer from a neurodovergent educator: 20 years ago, the diagnostic criteria for both ADHD and autism was incredibly narrow, and many, many children went undiagnosed because of that. The established scientific understanding was that autism had a very specific set of symptoms, so that's what educators knew as well. It wasn't even possible until 2013 to diagnose a child with ADHD if they had also been diagnosed with any developmental disorder, including autism.

It's very different now - the variance in autism is well-recognized rather than shoved under the rug as a strange inconsistency, and the high comorbidity between ADHD and autism is also well-known. Now teachers are taught to look for what's called "peaks and valleys": large gaps in ability in different areas of development. Your hyperlexia and fine motor/cognitive delays would fit that to a T. If you were a child nowadays, your symptoms would likely be noticed by teachers.

This is such a legitimately comforting thing to know. It's nice that hopefully kids who are like I was probably have an easier go of it nowadays.

My standard for disbelieving what I motherfucking saw with my own eyes is the whole writers room putting out a unanimous statement that adequately explains the scene where he calls Lucius a bitch, the scene where he calls Lucius a proper little seductress, the scene where he says Stede has done something to his boss's brain, and the scene where he bullies Ed for being sad about getting dumped in a way that clearly shows that they both don't think it's homophobic and understand the way in which internalized homophobia works, the way homophobia overlaps with toxic masculinity, and the less blatant ways homophobia can manifest. But until then I'm going with my gut and my own lived experience on what is homophobic, because that's what keeps me safe in real fucking life. This should also be your standard for letting people convince you that very blatant bigotry doesn't exist. I will not be gaslit by you people into accepting that people who aren't homophobic would spit "bitch" at an effeminate gay man like that. If someone said that to someone outside of a gay bar in that tone they would get fucking jumped and we all know it, so stop pretending.
