Can you spot the difference?
Look, I like both Marvel and DC. While I blame this pointless rivalry on Stan Lee’s antagonistic promotion of this rivalry for decades, I can say I love what both properties have to offer.
I will admit, Marvel had a better plan in its cinematic universe and I do love a lot of their movies, though they do sacrifice a lot to have it tie into their continuity.
That being said, I’m tired of all the DC hate. DC films have been criticized for their lack of humor, then suicide squad comes out and now its “ew its hot topic chic.”
Whatever. I saw people saying things like “just because its diverse doesn’t mean it’ll be good.” Sure. Also we don’t know if its going to be shit yet. There’s too much negativity on this. Tastes are tastes. And we’ll wait for the final results
Look Wonder Woman is getting her own film. Theyre pushing hard for her and I applaud their efforts to make sure she’s given a big spotlight in their line up and marketing. I bet you 100% she won’t be a love interest to 2 characters and then date another one and deal with her infertility issues. Also, amazed they got a female director for that film.
To me Jason Momoa as Aquaman is big. They made a poly actor take on a historically white role. And giving him his own movie. Its a move that separates itself from a character like War Machine, who is a great black character, but his identity in the cinematic universe is dependent on a white man, and his place in the movies is to get hurt so it motivates tony stark into action. Again, Asian director for aquaman.
They’re also having Cyborg in the films. Also his own solo film. They upgraded him from teen titan to justice league member, pushing him as an established black character on the roster instead of a second stringer.
Point being. Yeah this whole franchise could fall flat and end up being horseshit. But I see their efforts to provide diversity in a way that avoids shameless pandering and worthless characterizations.
Yes, I want quality AND representation. But right now I have to admire the fact that I’m seeing so many minorities in superhero films when I never thought I’d see the day. The fact is, its something the studio has to be aware of and I appreciate their strategy. And people shouldn’t ignore that aspect.
