 what about the people who were baptised by him and then died in the intervening 20 years? do their families just have to accept that their loved one is going to hell because some dude fucked up the paperwork?

Current church possition on unbaptized kids is that they go straight to heaven. Limbo was the solution instead of insta hell during centuries (and the babies and kids there could go to heaven if people prayed and paid enough anyways) but they changed it to heaven some years ago.

And I think it was the current pope that said that good people that died without being catholic werent sent to hell (which was controversial that I remember. But well, what he ties here on earth and all that).

So the vast majority of babies bauptized by him that died during these 20 years , so younger than 20 and thus, with very few exceptions, still kids, are considered in heaven.

Also, anyone can bauptize anyone with any water in case of emergency (I am not joking) and its "valid" if the person dies. If they survive, the bauptize becomes invalid again and its expected they have a "real" one asap so they can be valid again.

What I mean with that its that there is a lot of loopholes in the catholic faith regarding original sin, bauptize, heaven and hell. So its not that black and white as "those families now have to live knowing their dead kids are in hell".

The really interesting thing is how that guy went to priesthood, was there at least 20 years (but probably, a lot more) and yet, never realized he was saying incorrect words.

I’m not reading all that but the position of the Church is that unbaptized kids are left to the mercy of God, not that they necessarily go straight to Heaven.
