i think any conversation regarding banning tiktok that insists tiktok is actually a force for good misses the point
it doesn't matter if tiktok is the next library of alexandria or if it sucks shit, the problem is that the US government shouldn't have the authority to limit americans' access to the internet so dramatically. the problem is other social media corporations lobbying to ban their opponents. the problem is pretending data harvesting is just fine as long as we're the ones doing it, diverting attention away from how companies like facebook have already harvest and sold way more data than tiktok could ever dream of collecting for the chinese government.
every time somebody goes "uhm well this work depicts X, which seems kinda problematic >.>" and said depiction of X is specifically that it is a bad thing done by bad people, my blood pressure goes up a little bit
sometimes in conversation i'll say "delete tiktok" or "stop trusting people on tiktok" and it may sound like a joke in the context where i say it but im letting you know rn i 100% mean it every single time i say it and it has never been a joke
i think a lot of the magic of this shithole website actually comes from the fact that the search feature is completely useless… like the fact that you quite literally cannot search for a post even if you type it in word for word means that all the classic, beloved, and infamous posts are these ephemeral things that only come around every so often and can only be found organically when they happen to make it to your dash like a flock of rare migratory birds

truly my LEAST favorite form of advertisement these days is the faux-tiktoker/influencer who is here to Sell Me Something. the “omg unbox my Pureology (TM) skincare haul!!!” “doing the #NespressoChallenge!!!” “you guys will not BELIEVE what i got from shein-“ like its scary. its WEIRD. not only do i have no idea who these perfectly manicured, babytalking people are they feel less like real people than even an actual advertiser does. stop trying to make me believe you are my friend. you are something inhuman to me. you are a changeling. you are a brand wearing ill fitting human skin and i see its skeletal shape shift beneath the surface.

in recent events of that zoo losing the clouded leopard, it reminded me of the time i went to a large petting zoo and there was a free roaming little black sheep. cutest little guy i ever saw, soi went to the zookeeper nearby and said ‘i think its really cute how you have a sheep thats allowed to just walk around. ‘ then the zookeepers eyes widened and he grabbed his walky talky and ran
my sister is a zoo keeper and one time a farmer that is located near the zoo called her to tell her that he had a dead deer for them (to feed the big cats) and at the end of the call, AFTER they arranged the meet-up to get the meat he was like "also I saw a penguin in my fields this morning. Is it yours?"
after which (of course) a big search team swarmed out 😂😂😂
