During WWI, a Canadian soldier brought a pet bear with him when he sailed to Britain. He named the bear Winnie after his hometown of Winnipeg and later donated it to the London Zoo. A boy named Christopher Robin visited the zoo and fell in love with Winnie, inspiring his father to write stories about Winnie the Pooh.
Along with Winnie the Pooh, Winnipeg has a connection with the Titanic. Three passengers (who perished) were aboard that fatal voyage.
