I don't normally vague quite this directly, especially on posts I think are liable to spread, but quite a lot of people who saw the OP I'm referring to here have thanked me for sharing the information neutrally (hi prev, sorry I just happen to be jumping off here because I was thinking about it anyway)

I am a PTSD sufferer, and one of the symptoms of PTSD is hypervigilance. Constantly watching your back, constantly aware of any shifts in mood in a room, always paranoid, always looking for the other shoe to drop— its not a fun way to live, and it is not a sign of a healthy mind. You should NOT be constantly checking every single piece of good news you recieve, you are allowed to be happy about things you see in passing, and a lot of the time, they are good things, or maybe you can get good things out of them. Despite the probable side effects of this project it IS going to restore a massive amount of lost media to the web, so we'll get to have that, even if we're not actually going to get a platform safe from AI influence altogether.

And this could still be jumping to the worst case scenario. We haven't seen a TOS. sure, this company does AI training elsewhere, but every tech company in the world does that, so maybe this is unrelated. Do I believe that, no. But it's not stupid to hope for it. Hope is never stupid.

Also, the sources for this aren't actually that easy to find. It's like four pages deep to get from the new diVine company to the sponsor of the company to their other projects to the section of their other projects that mentions AI. It took me a bit, and I KNEW IT WAS THERE.

So, in summation: yeah, this is probably a con. It's a major bummer, because this is a difficult time to be on the internet, and we deserved a W. I think we're just gonna have to pick our favorite album and movie releases to get us through, and let go of the hopes of AI free social media for a little longer. But at least some lost media will be restored, and remember— none of you were stupid for being optimistic about this. We can have nice things. They'll just have to wait a little while.

I have a family friend who worked at our local Salvation Army headquarters as a a secretary. This particular office took all the Christmas donations for children in need, put them in a warehouse, and on a designated day the staff and their friends picked through them all, taking whatever they wanted. She saw people hauling away bikes donated for specific families. Some local children had hundreds of dollars of gifts donated in their name, and on Christmas they received three cheap things, items likely not even from the person who sponsored them.

My friend quit, and I’ve not given them a dime of my money since then.

I’m a wildfire and disaster logistics specialist.

I deal with a lot of agencies who provide disaster relief.

I used to say the Salvation Army’s disaster services were the one (literally the ONE) good thing they did.

They would come in, set up a canteen trailer, make and pass out hot coffee and donated food in a disaster, usually being one of the first agencies to get there and the last to leave.

Then I found out.

Every time they did this, regardless of if they were actually invited or deployed by the agency in charge (usually FEMA, sometimes others) they would SELF-DEPLOY. Meanjng they would just show up. Ok. That’s not TOO bad, sometimes agencies have to take initiative and get there before the red tape is sorted out. BUT. They, after they left at the end of the incident, they would send FEMA or the host agency a BILL. They used one or two paid employees (usually the driver of the truck and a supervisor); and many VOLUNTEERS, but they would bill for EVERYONE’s Labor at standard federal rates. They would bill for the food they distributed even though it was all donated by another agency or private parties. They would bill for the coffee they made and the supplies. Except they would use electricity from the shelter location, water from donations or from the shelter, and in many cases, they would get the coffee and industrial filters DONATED, but bill for them at retail prices.

Don’t FUCKING give to the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army is also ass to the workers. A good number of people join it, naively thinking that it’s doing good, and end up leaving cynical and beaten down. The management is hostile, if not outright abusive, and demand some ridiculous hours of it lower to mid-level staff. Don’t support these people.

We failed as a society when everyone stopped wearing headphones.

At my parents place with 2 children watching YT on tablets and 2 adults watching tiktoks and reels on their phones and trying not to summon a comically sized Loony Toons hammer out of my back pocket to smash them all.

I'm rebloging this twice im tired of people not wearing headphones when watching videos in public. It's basic etiquette to wear headphones in public when you listen to things.

I am absolutely That Bitch who will just ask anyone doing this to stop doing it, and I think what surprises me most is that the vast majority of people have one of two reactions: sheer incredulity that their tinny little podcast could possibly be anything other than an exquisite audio experience for anyone else, swiftly followed by a deeply mortified little smile and a shame-ridden silence for the rest of the train journey; or absolute rage that I'd dare ask them to do something to make the space even remotely more comfortable for - dry heave - other people.

A few months ago, I asked a man in the hospital waiting room - in the ENT department, for extra audacity points - if he could please use headphones, and he said 'no, I don't have any,' and when I said 'well, no-one else here wants to hear it,' he just shrugged and said 'but I do.' He kept listening to it without even turning it down, and everyone else just rolled their eyes and muttered about what a prick he was. A middle-aged woman once told me that I needed to 'mind my own business' for asking her just to turn it down, because she was listening to it at full volume, and then she proceeded to loudly bitch about my appearance with her daughter for a solid 5 minutes, interspersed with direct suggestions that I should sincerely consider fucking off, and it was only when everyone else in the train carriage confirmed that they, too, had been pissed off by her behaviour that she stopped yelling at me and sat back in her seat with a face like a smacked arse. And once, I asked a bunch of teenagers on the train if they could turn it down, and they started filming me and told me they'd make me 'TikTok famous', which frankly excited me in the moment, but has since sorely disappointed me because I've yet to become a household name.

My point being: people are either just so self-absorbed that they genuinely don't realise that other people might not enjoy the experience of being subjected to whatever they, the arbiter of good taste, are listening to; or they're complete sacks of piss who truly do not give a shit about anyone else, and refuse to consider the prospect of doing so. The former is frustrating, but ultimately just a lack of awareness that can usually be remedied by making them aware in the moment that they're being annoying. The latter makes me want to go on an actual murder spree. If you're the kind of person who listens to stuff in public without headphones - and yes, I'm including people who make calls on speakerphone - then just know that you are a festering polyp on the anus of society, and everyone in your immediate vicinity wants to flush your head down the nearest toilet.
