A well informed autism self diagnosis is just as valid as a psychiatric diagnosis. Additionally, under the given circumstances it is safer, most probably less expensive and you don't need to wait for any appointment.

10 screenshots from a twitter thread by @devprice with white text on black background.

The thread reads as follows:

I hear from many trans & nonbinary people who are actively seeking an Autism diagnosis. My advice is RETHINK THIS. Restricting Autistic people's access to gender affirming care is a major TERF talking point. As legal attacks on trans healthcare mounts, a psychiatric dx is a risk

The high overlap between Autism & transness was one of the main "concerns" JK Rowling rose in her "TERF Wars" blog post. Numerous fearmongering anti-trans articles influenced by TERFs have raised the issue since. if youre trans now is not a good time to seek a formal Autism dx.

An Autism dx does not unlock access to any beneficial therapeutic treatment, bc there is no "treating" Autism. Formal diagnosis makes us vulnerable to legal & psychiatric control and gets our competence challenged -- you dont need to subject yourself to this. diagnose yourself

I am close with dozens and dozens of Autistic people, and I have no idea who has a diagnosis and who does not. It does not matter. There is no reason to ask, no reason for others to care how someone identifies and how they arrived there -- all that matters is community support.

also if you cannot afford to pursue a lengthy & expensive lawsuit, it's unlikely a formal diagnosis will actually protect you from discrimination at work, in school or in housing. if you have the means great, but most don't. disclosing disability can be more risk than its worth.

if you need a dx to access resources such as disability benefits or extra test time, by all means go for it, but be cognizant of the potential costs. you could be denied for surgery, lose control of your assets, be found legally incompetent, lose custody of your kids...

My autism dx was forced on me at age 2 and kept me out of the military in my 20s. It’s been nothing but destructive. I was beat up in sped and believed myself to be stupid my entire life because of it. I can’t even buy life insurance.

By Emily Johnson @/emily_rj

In some states, people with autism face being denied organ transplants, are at higher risk for forced sterilization and/or denied contraceptive and reproductive care, and have a higher risk of police brutality I considered this and decided informal diagnosis was best for me

By AK Faulkner is sweet and...

In the UK, an autism diagnosis is already a significant barrier to gender-affirming care. The GICs automatically try to discount dysphoria as autism during your initial assessments with them. If you arrive pre-diagnosed with autism they write your dysphoria off as that.

I've frequently encountered people who are like "well I want an autism diagnosis because I'll be more comfortable calling myself autistic if I have it confirmed officially" and while I'm not going to tell other people how to live their lives (I strongly believe in letting people make their own risk/reward decisions even if they choose what I think of as the foolish option) I do want to caution anyone who thinks that way to please check to make sure these feelings aren't bleeding into the way you treat other self-diagnosed autistic people

This is something to keep in mind with diagnoses in general. Having official recognition is important in cases you are seeking accomodations, disability, or certain treatments. But a lot of cases are like this where there aren't treatments, or the treatments are over the counter/diy friendly.

Sometimes if you have a good doctor they'll even let you try medication without it! My PCP was actually willing to let me try meds for ADHD without an official diagnosis! I am really grateful for that, especially since they ended up not working out, so if I had gotten the diagnosis just for the sake if trying them, I'd be subjected to additional ableism with no positive trade off! Not everyone will be that lucky, but it's worth a try before resorting to painting a target on your back.

missouri’s trans healthcare ban specifically stipulates that someone needs to be screened for autism. fake it. mask as best you can. lie. do whatever you need to avoid a diagnosis unless you absolutely need accommodations to live.

I'M PREGNANT AND NEED TO NOT BE. PLEASE HELP

fuck okay so I can't believe I'm making this post, but here we are.

despite birth control and my best efforts, i'm pregnant.

i can't handle this right now for a lot of reasons-- i'm going through a divorce, i'm deeply in debt due to the marriage i'm trying to end, barely staying afloat as it is working multiple jobs. i'm multiply disabled and so far have been EXTREMELY sick every day to the point of being unable to function. i don't have the time, money, physical and mental health, or resources to deal with a pregnancy, let alone a baby.

on top of all that, i have an infection they can't treat while i am pregnant, so they're trying to get this terminated as quickly as possible. i have an appointment set for Tuesday, 3/28/23 at 2pm.

my insurance does not cover abortions except in proven cases of rape or incest. all this to say, I need to somehow scrape together $600 by Tuesday for the abortion itself, plus cost of transportation. it's also been difficult to eat lately and i've been living off yogurt and the few other specific things i can keep down, so help restocking the fridge would be amazing.

i am of course gratefully accepting donations but am also just getting started as a content creator and i'm happy to do custom pics/vids etc as well.

So Netflix is releasing this animated movie but here’s the thing - all backgrounds are done in AI. No actual BG artists were hired or credited for this work.

And here’s the kicker - I gave them too much credit. I realized that not even the AI users are credited apparently. Check this out:

“+Human”. No names, no nothing.

I know it’s tempting, but please don’t hate-watch this thing. Numbers equal profit even if the people watching are just doing it to mock. Don’t give Netflix and other studios even more incentive to fire more animators and replace them with machines trained on their work and skill.

Hilarously, the excuse used is ‘there aren’t enough artists’. That’s not true - there are more than enough artists, but the real issue is that no one wants to pay a living wage. Here’s a short video about the reality of animation in Japan.

The biggest winners in this equation at the end of the day are the AI infrastructure owners - owners of Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, etc. Do not feed this machine, it creates more monopolization of entire industries, raises a powerful few and dehumanizes the rest.

At least 6,000 children from Ukraine have attended Russian “re-education” camps in the past year, with several hundred held there for weeks or months beyond their scheduled return date, according to a new report published in the US.

Since the start of the war nearly a year ago, children as young as four months have been taken to 43 camps across Russia, including in Moscow-annexed Crimea and Siberia, for “pro-Russia patriotic and military-related education”, said the report.

Russian authorities sought to provide a pro-Moscow viewpoint to children through school curricula as well as through field trips to patriotic sites and talks from veterans, the report found.

Children were also given training in firearms, although Nathaniel Raymond, a Yale researcher who oversaw the report, said there was no evidence they were being sent back to fight.

“In many cases, Russia purported to temporarily evacuate children from Ukraine under the guise of a free summer camp, only to later refuse to return the children and to cut off all contact with their families.”

The report called for a neutral body to be granted access to the camps and for Russia immediately to stop adoptions of Ukrainian children. The report said that Putin aides have been closely involved in the operation, especially Maria Lvova-Belova, the presidential commissioner for children’s rights. It quoted her as saying that 350 children had been adopted by Russian families and that more than 1,000 were awaiting adoption.

Raymond said that Russia was in “clear violation” of the Fourth Geneva Convention on the treatment of civilians during war and called the report a “gigantic Amber alert” – referring to US public notices of child abductions.

The Russian activity “in some cases may constitute a war crime and a crime against humanity”, he told reporters.

Ukraine’s government recently claimed that more than 14,700 children had been deported to Russia, where some had been sexually exploited.

If you don't reblog anything about war in Ukraine at least reblog this article. Our children are kidnapped and deported to Russia. It is a part of genocide and they don't deserve to go through all that hell.

Two days after the US published a report claiming Russia has abducted at least 6,000 Ukrainian children, children's rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova tells Putin she "adopted" a 15-year-old from Mariupol herself. "All thanks to you, Vladimir Vladimirovich!"

I am 400% with Kat on this.

Quick tip: If you're not sure if something is genocidal or not, google, "Did the Nazis do X?" And if the answer is yes, then you've got genocidal conditions on your hands.

And, yes, the Nazis DID tear children away from families but even more than that, they slaughtered whole villages and kept all the children they viewed as "Aryan enough" to pass their bullshit racial muster because Germans weren't having kids fast enough, so the Reich went, "Well, plan B, then."

Getting kicked out of our apartment.

So, I really hoped to never have to make this post, but me and my partner are getting kicked out of the apartment we're currently staying at. We have housing lined up, but my partner is going to have to quit their job and find a new one after we move, and we don't know how long that will take. We will need to pay bills and buy food once we're moved out, which is happening near the end of March, and we need as much help as we can get to build a buffer before then. My partner's hours have been slashed to 20% of what he was normally getting, and I'm severely disabled and unable to work. All of our money is getting swallowed up by keeping us going -now-, and we're completely unable to build any savings to rely on after we move.

If anyone is able to help, either by donating or signal boosting, please, we need all the help we can get.

My cashapp is $AliceMoonflowyr and my paypal is alicesunflowercomm@gmail.com

Every little bit helps. Thank you in advance.

In 2017 I met a remarkable woman at Berkeley who had dedicated herself to learning as many languages as she could—and she had learned a bit of well over 60, natlangs and conlangs alike, many to fluency. She's been hit with a string of tragedies in the past year, and is seeking help to avert eviction and homelessness. If you can, visit her GoFundMe and read her story; if not, I ask if you can reblog it to signal boost it a bit. Thanks for reading. <3

Funny looking guy I did some years back, their ancestors were jawless bottomfeeders, so they eat by scraping their teeth on things and by eating rocks to aid in digestion. They form summer groups of about fifty individuals that graze together, tho during the winter up to three hundred can be seen in a single herd.

Their vestigial third member is used to not only manipulate the environment, but also to hold on to other individuals and to carry children, of which they have up to four per breeding season.

if you don’t have @ least one collection of specific items i literally have nothing more to say to you. we will never relate to each other. however, you cool ass motherfuckers who do collect @ least one type of thing, reblog this post and say what that thing is. i’ll go first: clown dolls and good luck charms

Hey Dave, hope you are doing fine! I have been conlanging for some years now and one thing that always bugs me is developing a TAM system, I end up always falling into the past/pres/fut or past/non-past distinction, maybe with a proximal/distal split if I'm feeling adventurous, and with time it has started to feel very...samy-ish, wondering if you might have some advice for creating realistic TAM systems?

Thank you, really love your work.

Avatar

I think you're looking at this from the wrong angle. Almost all TMA systems start out simple and get more complex. This is because systems that start off as one thing end up getting used for another thing, then something new and janky ends up replacing one function of the old thing, and now the old thing is only used for a strange thing, with the janky thing becoming the new way of doing the simple thing. And then the same thing happens again. And again. And again. And again.

A super simple system might be something like this:

kaba "eat/ate"

kabakaba "is eating"

This is basically perfective vs. imperfective, and it's rather iconic. As you know, perfective can be "is eating", "was eating", "will be eating", etc. It depends on the temporal context (basically, throw in "yesterday", and suddenly it's "was eating").

Now this is a perfectly fine strategy. No reason for it to change. But with verb systems, speakers are basically like...

And so suddenly they decide, you know what? If you're going to be doing something, a lot of things are done while sitting, so what if...

hona "sit"

hona kaba "is eating"

Suddenly you use hona plus verb for the present. Then suddenly you have:

kaba "ate"

hona kaba "is eating"

kabakaba "was eating"

And now you have a unique verb form for the past imperfective like Spanish.

Then basically you do that with a bunch of other things and you can get a bunch of crazy verb forms.

But the trick is, if it ever gets too crazy, speakers replace them. They replace them with "simpler" things (that aren't really simpler), then they coalesce into verb forms, then those verb forms become too "complicated", and so they're replaced by "simpler" things, etc.

If you look at it as a synchronic system, that's where you get weird things like, "This language has a presumptive hodiernal realis subjunctive!", but the names are usually garbage and are out of date by the time the new generation of speakers can use a smart phone. Verbal systems are the most lifelike part of a language, in that the moment you think they're one way, they change. Really deflating as a conlanger. The darn things don't sit still...

So yeah, don't worry about your systems not being complicated enough, and don't worry about what the various systems are called. Just create a system, use it, figure out how speakers would replace it, do it, and keep going. You'll get to something pretty complex without even realizing how you got there.

Think this is incredible advice for thinking how languages actually work, "the darn things don't sit still".

My final words on Rooster Teeth & just SOME of my experiences there.

I’ve been waiting to say anything directly for a long time on this subject in hopes that something - anything - would change and get better, but it’s obvious that this is just “how it is there.”

So it’s time for me to finally say something about Rooster Teeth.

I joined the company, officially, as a contracted content creator and editor in February 2013. I worked to create a monthly video game news/release series. I produced episodes every month until I was officially hired as a full time content creator/editor in November of 2013.

From February 2013 until November 2013, I went entirely unpaid for all of my contract work. I was never given the payment promised for anything I did. When I was hired full time and I brought that up, I was told that “it’s been so long already, it’s not really a big deal is it?” And then the subject was never brought up again.

Within a few weeks of working at Rooster Teeth I was given a nickname, that nickname was a slur. Every day I came into work I was called “Fggt” - but they could not use that name in content so when anyone was recording I was called “Fugz” instead. For any fans who used that nickname for me for years, that’s what you were calling me. I couldn’t say anything about it, I had reported the use of that nickname for years to HR, and nothing was ever done about it and the videos that use that nickname for me are still up.

When Christmas rolled around my first year, 2013, I was given a “bonus” of about $100. Any money I had at the time was extremely helpful as I had nearly nothing to my name, so I was grateful for it. But a long time member of the company looked at me as I was handed my small bonus and scoffed “Why do YOU get a bonus? You’ve only been here for five minutes.”

In my first years there I would arrive at work around 7am (two hours before everyone else) to begin editing videos and would often have to stay until 9pm to get as much work done as possible. This was actively encouraged so we could have a backlog of content, but I was always given “rush orders” to edit more important videos to go out either the same day or next day. That’s when the crunch began for me and it did not end.

From that point on harassment started, and not just toward me. Any time I brought up mistreatment or that “making fun of people in content only encourages the community to hate us” - I was waved away saying “IT’S JUST A JOKE! Ignore the comments!”

This “ignore the comments” mantra was a way to excuse their own behavior. Anyone who was not “important” was constantly made fun of with no way to defend themselves or be part of the content in a way to defend themself even jokingly so. We were silenced at every turn.

Jeremy, Matt, and I tried to make content together as often as we could in those earlier days. And we rarely got the chance to do so. I remember being yelled at for making the Zelda video with Matt after it had already gone up because it was a “waste of time”.

During that time I was put into a position where I ignored my own physical health to focus more on work, which eventually caused me to come down with pneumonia. I spent several days in the hospital with a fever over 112F. When I was released I was back to work only a few days later and with the same work schedule.

Eventually I had enough from the department I was working for at the time and moved departments in hope that I would be better treated elsewhere in the company. I still loved the work I did, I loved some of the people at the company, and I believed that if I put my effort into it I could make things better for everyone.

The department I transferred to promised me a producer job and show running their new podcast while also being tasked to edit videos and sometimes write stories for news channel. I was never given the producer position in that department, I was never allowed even near the podcast unless they were “desperate for a last minute person”, I went entirely uncredited for anything I wrote for them, and I was pushed to edit 3 videos from start to finish every day with little to no turn around time so they could be posted immediately.

My hours in that department were 7am until 11pm.

I was crunching harder than before.

I wasn’t allowed to be in anything.

I had my name removed from everything I worked on.

I was put in an office where I was forgotten about and swept under the rug, people even IN the company forgot I worked there with how sectioned off and pushed aside I was.

In 2016 I came out as trans and many people at the company publicly voiced their support on social media.

Inside the company however, things got worse.

People had no idea how to deal with a trans woman, so I was interacted with even less and only trotted out every so often to show off “We Hire LGBTQIA+ People!”

It was only at this point where the nickname “Fugz” finally stopped being used all the time. Three years of content with that name being used toward me and all that content is still up.

During that time my acting manager began to harass me and lie to the community any time I was “planned to be on camera and couldn’t show up” - many times it was said to the audience watching that I “had already gone home” when I was in the other room crunching to finish my job and the work of my manager.

The harassment continued and I began to spiral into a deep depression, wondering what I could do, I eventually reported it to HR and the “solution” was that they brought in my manager who was harassing me into a Two-On-One meeting where the manager said “oh I’m sorry” and that was it. The way I was treated did not change at all and actively became worse.

I then went to one of the founding fathers of the company to express my concerns, and was told that I was “too nice to work at Rooster Teeth” and that I should “just quit and find somewhere else to work” - I was horrified.

At the moment I couldn’t do anything but feel horrified and powerless. I was an out trans woman in Texas in 2018 and was told “just quit and find work elsewhere in Texas” a state that actively finds ways to keep our rights from us.

Throughout my employment I also struggled to get the company insurance to cover my transition despite Rooster Teeth telling me that “Oh it’s all good” - because of their inaction and lack of help in this matter I amassed horrible amounts of medical debt despite being “completely covered” by them.

I still am recovering from this debt now as Rooster Teeth has been underpaying me for years, my raises were frozen by my manager at the time, and because of that I never received a proper raise even up until I quit earlier this year.

Until the end of 2020 I was paid around $40k per year as a Producer/Director. Far below the industry standard. If not for the help of one person fighting for me to be paid properly, I wouldn’t have gotten bumped up to the pay of the lowest paid person next to me. Which was nearly $70k. I was shocked that I was being underpaid by nearly $30k.

During the 2019 layoffs, I was actually one of the people affected. I was very nearly laid off as well, but was told to either move to LA and work there (at the $40k per year rate which is UNLIVABLE in LA) or be laid off immediately.

I agreed to move to LA, Rooster Teeth said they would be giving me $5k moving costs to pick up my life and move to LA by March of 2020. The money never was given to me and then COVID forced the company into moving to remote, meaning my job was actually saved by COVID happening.

Crunch during the height of COVID was monstrous. Every department was forced to push out more and more content and do more and more work to make up for “losses” - many of us were working 7 days a week and extremely long hours.

I helped run the 2021 Anniversary Stream Event, but in the middle of production I had to undergo life saving surgery and was told I needed AT LEAST two weeks rest before going back to work. The person I was working with to schedule that event took credit for all the work I did up to that point and then BLAMED ME for anything that went wrong with it because “I wasn’t doing my job” while I was recovering for major surgery and was on mandated medical leave.

BRGs (Business Resource Groups) were created at this time to help with representation issues inside the company. I did everything I could to help the other BRGs as well as the Queer BRG I helped lead. By mid 2021 I was told “we’ve done enough for the queer community” - which hurt to hear as I felt like we had barely accomplished anything and were still struggling to have accurate representation on screen as most of our PRIDE stream events featured mostly Cis/Het talent still.

During this time there was a lot of outspokenness for the mistreatment of minority groups inside of Rooster Teeth from former employees, lots of fans asked “Why didn’t you all do anything about it?”, to which I say actual ground level employees did everything they could. But we could only do so much.

At that moment I asked for transparency for how others, not just one or two employees, were treated in the company - myself included - and was essentially told that “the company is going through a lot right now just leave it alone”. How I was being treated and how others were being treated was once again swept under the rug.

I left Rooster Teeth because, despite thinking I could make positive change in the company, they proved that I couldn’t every step of the way. From 2013 until 2022, I did what I could to help my fellow employees, make positive change, and help the industry.

It’s also worth mentioning that for every bit of VO I did before I left Rooster Teeth, I wasn’t actually paid for any of it under the idea that “I was an employee, so I don’t need to be paid for VO.” In that case and the way it was viewed, I was paid less than $30 per hour for each of my VO sessions. Which is well below any industry standard.

But I was ultimately silenced and pushed aside.

This is all really just the surface level, there’s so much more I want to say but honestly it’s all so exhausting at this point and I’ve done everything I can.

I still struggle regularly with the emotional, mental, physical, and financial damage that was done to me over those years.

There are good people still working there, I’m friends with them, and I wish them the best.

TL;DR

  • Feb 2013 - Nov 2013. Unpaid Contract Work
  • Fugz = Fggt, reported to HR nothing was done
  • 2013 Christmas "Bonus" $100. Long time members disapproved of said bonus
  • 14hr work days, rush orders for same or next day videos
  • "Any time I brought up mistreatment or that “making fun of people in content only encourages the community to hate us” - I was waved away saying “IT’S JUST A JOKE! Ignore the comments!”" RT crunch caused pneumonia, no recovery period on return
  • Crunched harder, physically isolated "people even IN the company forgot I worked"
  • RT never fulfilled their deals promotion deals
  • 15 hr work days
  • 2016 came out as Trans, Transphobia harassment started
  • Acting Manager lied to the community and harassed me, HR did nothing and enabled harassment
  • Founding Fathers knew and did nothing. Said “too nice to work at Rooster Teeth” and "just quit and find somewhere else to work"
  • RT did not properly support medical insurance coverage
  • End 2020 Position Producer/Director, paid $40k. Next lowest paid person was $70k.
  • 2019, forced to move to LA or get laid off. RT never paid moving costs. COVID forced remote jobs thus SAVING my job
  • RT INCREASES crunch during COVID
  • 2021 Anniversary Stream Event. Had LIFE SAVING surgery, majority work stolen by coworker and blamed production failures on me during MEDICAL LEAVE.
  • BRG created to help with representation issues, mid 2021 RT said "we've done enough for the queer community" PRIDE stream events still mostly Cis/Het talents
  • Mistreatment of minorities in RT ignored "“the company is going through a lot right now just leave it alone"
  • Unpaid for VO work during tenure at RT, May Marigold and RWBY Fairy Tales included.

Handful of good people. Bad Company.

if you have the opportunity to vote, PLEASE TAKE IT.

KEEP AO3 WONDERFUL! THANKS!

Something really shitty has just been passed by the UK goverment.

A new bill that is stripping out human rights has been passed and we need to fight it before it costs lives. The new Human Rights Bill has made nazi Germans esc changes that will effect you or somone you love.

The most notiable parts being:

-If you are admitted to hospital with a disability or chronic condition a doctor can put a DNR do not ressusatate on you and you can’t appeal it.

-They are stopping woman from being able to move fowards with assault charges

- They are making it impossible for victims of terrorism to get justice. They won’t let people like the victims of the hillsborough disaster hold the people responsible

Please do your own research if you must but we can’t let this happen!

There a petition to sign that’s already half way there so please share it around and tell ppl in the UK what is happening.

I would really REALLY appreciate it if my American followers come bring some recognition to the UK’s plight rn too.
