I think i have a crush on this perfect.
y’know there’s a certain poignance to the fact that steven’s gem weapon is a shield, when you consider his arc
because in the beginning, you have him struggling to master it, struggling to live up to his mother’s example. his family and friends need his shield, he cries- need to be protected. and for the most part, the desire to protect others is good! he’s very brave to want to step up to help when there’s danger.
but as time moves on, as he’s assailed and desensitized with threat after threat… the shield stops being merely a manifestation of his powers.
his shield becomes synonymous with himself.
steven IS the shield now. he throws himself in the fire for the benefit of others, sacrifices himself to Homeworld to be shattered to save his friends, willingly burns himself to embers in exhaustion to try and stop a world calamity.
and in the end, all his self-sacrificial tendencies considered, he forgot one very important fact about shield bearers:
a shield is meant to protect the person behind it, too
