“Let me say it like this, every single person on this stage tonight, whether they’re in the band or they play an instrument or they’re a dancer, they’ve all been doing it since they were little kids and we’ve all wanted to do it since we were little kids, and what we have tonight in front of us is what I call in my head, like when we were eight years old daydreaming about what it would be like to be in front of an amazing crowd, this is what we envisioned. I just wanted to thank you so much for giving that to us tonight. I was looking at the faces of the band and the dancers backstage when we were running around quick-changing, and their faces are like this [gestures wildly]. You are such an incredible crowd, and it is such an honor to play for a crowd like this. And I look out into this crowd, and I feel like one thing that everyone here might have in common is that we all like the feeling of feeling connected to someone else, like the feeling of someone saying, ‘I’ve been there too, I’ve been through that too,’ whether it’s with a friend or about someone next to you that knows the words to the same song, that’s amazing. And what can be so scary about the idea of a reputation is that it feels like a disconnection. It feels like that’s what people are saying to you that you have nothing to do with, or when you’re not around. And if it feels like your reputation doesn’t match how you feel about yourself, or if it doesn’t feel like your reputation really represents you, that can be a really scary feeling. And one of the scariest parts of feeling scared of your reputation is that you worry that because of something fake, like a bad reputation, you might miss out on or lose the opportunity to find something real, like love, or friendship, or talking to someone who understands you. You’re afraid people will hear something bad about you, or not want to get to know you because they feel like they already know you and don’t want more. And in writing an album called reputation, I thought a lot about it, and when it comes to feelings and reputations, it’s all very delicate, you know what I mean?”
