The Fitz stans are very much about a white man bringing a woman validation through a relationship. A RICH & POWERFUL white man. Jake is blue-collar and has always had to answer to someone (usually Rowan). Of course Jake is not ideal in the way that Fitz is. The character obviously has white trash roots. So when Fitz stans say they are not idealizing whiteness because they hate Jake they are being disingenuous. The whole point of idealizing the white man in the first place is because he has money & prestige & the societally favored skin tone. Jake has the societally favored skin tone but he certainly doesn’t have Fitz’s prestige & power.
And you know what – most romance fiction is about the heroine getting validation through a “Fitz”. In most romance novels, the hero is rich and white and powerful. There are thousands of romance novels about English dukes or wall street billionaires. And I get how subconsciously fans are affected by this male ideal and want Olivia to snag him. The problem is that Scandal isn’t built a like romance novel. It’s built like a melodrama or a character study. So Scandal is deconstructing the male ideal. The type of character that is usually the most powerful character in a romance novel is being presented on Scandal as problematic and dependent on the women in his life. That’s very anti-romance novel and I think if you were expecting a traditional romance than of course this feels wrong.

Funny you happened to reblog this. I was saying to @lennybaby2 how interesting the racial commentary was in 5-21 with Rowan and Olivia basically trading Jake between them as if he were property. Jake even makes the comment about how he’s gone from being Rowan’s bitch to Olivia’s bitch. In the Rowan/Liv/Jake trinity, Jake is the least powerful of the three. Rowan & Liv are well aware of the currency of Jake’s race and how that can help them achieve power because they are still working within a deeply racist society. (When Edison spoke truth to power it ruined his chance as the presidency.) Yet the show is very clear that being white man does not make you superior, contrary to what racist society would have you believe. Shonda Rhimes, God bless her, is saying something that almost no other popular entertainer will say. If anything, Scandal suggests that the straight while male characters are less strong because they haven’t had to fight as hard. I would say the four most powerful characters on the show are Rowan, Cyrus, Mellie and Olivia. Olivia, being a minority twice over, is fighting the hardest and because of that has the potential for the most greatness. Liv was about to smack Jake upside the head when he was talking about walking away from being VP so they could be a normal couple because she has not been working that hard for that long to trade it in for being average.
I think the anger from Terry fans (who pretend to be Olitz fans) is not about Liv/Jake. I mean Liv hasn’t even told Jake she loves him. It’s about something much deeper. It’s about being angry at Shonda Rhimes for pulling apart the fantasy of the white male savior. Shonda is saying that Olivia & Rowan don’t need Fitz or another rich white man to give them validation. She is saying minorities, especially black women, are already validated through their ability to survive and thrive in a hostile environment. She is saying we need to stop assuming the white man is the hero of the story. She is saying that a black woman is not only a worthy hero but perhaps the most deserving to be a protagonist of this wild and wonderful story.

I feel exhausted when it comes to many human beings as of late.
Today while I was on public transit, the usual happened- every seat on the train was taken and the seat beside me was the only one that was free, but no one chose to sit there, and instead everyone stood. Nothing out of the ordinary for a turbaned and bearded guy in North America.
However, one woman put the icing on the cake. She was having difficulty standing on the moving train, so I offered the seat beside me. She looked at me, shook her head, then looked the other way. Her friend also asked her to sit down, but she refused again. As they were leaving, he asked her why she wouldn’t sit down. Her answer: “I don’t feel safe sitting next to someone that looks like that.”
As the door closed behind them, I looked on- shocked at what I just heard. Other people had clearly heard what she said, but didn’t really react or say anything. I decided to get up and stand as I didn’t want to face the same BS again.
A Punjabi Uncle Ji had seen what had happened and he came over to talk to me. I thought he would say words of encouragement, but instead he told me that I should “change my look,” tie up my beard to make it look smaller, wear a shorter gatra so my kirpan isn’t seen, and tie a more “appropriate” turban (aka the patiala shahi, not my dumalla).
Angered, I left the car at the next station and boarded the next one. The Paris attacks may be over, but the attacks on brown bodies have just begun. In the UK, someone tried to push a hijabi woman onto the tracks of an incoming train. In Ontario, a woman was attacked in public, and a Hindu mandir was vandalized.
I am tired of microaggressions. I am tired of racism. I am tired of the fact that we try to hide the fact that racism is a HUGE issue in Canada. I am tired of people in our community that cannot stand for their own people. I am tired of respectability politics.
