Married a Viking as geeky as me. Adopted a cat and dog that don't get along. Expect lots of dog pictures since the cat won't hold still. Our rottie, Sheila, had TPLO surgery on her right knee in January of 2015. Then in June, she had TPLO surgery on the left knee. To see how she's doing, check the 'tplo Sheila' tag!

Mira Furlan was incredible. I can’t believe we’ve lost another B5 cast member.

Poet Amanda Gorman arrives for today’s Inauguration Day ceremonies – at 22, she’s the youngest poet in recent memory to recite at an inauguration.

“I think there is a real history of orators who have had to struggle, a type of imposed voicelessness, you know, having that stage at inauguration,” Gorman tells NPR’s Steve Inskeep. “So it’s really special for me.“ Check that conversation out here.

#hellajuneteenth

We’re standing in solidarity with Hella Creative’s #hellajuneteenth movement and echoing their demands: Juneteenth should be declared a federally recognized holiday. Celebrating Independence Day as a day of freedom when enslaved Black men, women, and children were not legally declared free for another 85 years (with 250,000 not told until two and a half years later) white-washes the cruel legacy of our country’s greatest sin. It’s time we demand Congress step up.

We’re stepping up, too

Starting this year, Juneteenth will be recognized as an official company holiday at Tumblr. This should have been done long ago. If you’d like to see your companies do the same, check out #hellajuneteenth’s incredible resources including templates for requesting your employer recognize Juneteenth like they recognize Independence Day. There’s also a template for an out-of-office message to help spread the word and a poster business owners can print out and hang in the office. For those eager to show their support on social media, #hellajuneteenth provides a number of graphics to share and they suggest you use the #juneteenth tag with the following caption:

We’re reclaiming our time.
For years, the enslaved people gave countless hours of free labor to their owners. Since emancipation, we have been making up for that lost time. So in true solidarity with our ancestors, it’s only right that we declare this to be a day free of labor.

This is important

Sign this petition addressed to Congress. Contact your reps and encourage them to support the initiative. Your voices have led to Minneapolis pledging to disband its police department, the arrests of the police officers responsible for George Floyd’s death, the repeal of Section 50-A in NYC, and the long-overdue demolition of Confederate statues.

Keep that energy going, Tumblr. Demand Juneteenth gets federal recognition. You’re winning, so don’t stop now.

Tumblr,

As you’re probably aware, the coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, has now been found in countries all over the globe. This is an understandably disconcerting moment for many, but there are steps we can all take to help mitigate the effect on our communities.

COVID-19 is spreading, but misinformation and disinformation are spreading even faster. The most responsible thing you can do is protect yourself from both the disease and false information. Being prepared with facts and data instead of assumptions and fabrications will help inform how you can best prepare for COVID-19.

Here are some resources you can trust:

  • WHO provides daily updates surrounding COVID-19’s spread, infection rate, and general influence on our society. Their latest update given on March 3, 2020, details that there is a shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare professionals. They also provide a very handy FAQ section, where you can learn more about how to protect yourself and your community.
  • Every day Worldometer updates its website with the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in each country that has been affected. Worldometer has been rated one of the best free reference websites by the American Library Association, and for good reason: it lists every single one of its regular sources here, and lists the source of every COVID-19 update at the bottom of the COVID-19 page.
  • Your local health department will often have the most up-to-date information specific to your immediate area, including how to proceed if you believe you may be showing symptoms of the virus. If you live in the United States, you can find the contact information for your health department by visiting the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).

There’s another thing about this news that a lot of places are not talking about: the toll on one’s mental health, especially if you are someone who struggles with anxiety. If you find your concerns about being prepared are crossing a line that affects your mental health, please consider reaching out to a loved one who can guide you to help, a mental health professional, or an organization set up to help those in need.

Here are a couple of organizations you can trust:

  • Crisis Text Line is free, 24/7 support. Just text 741741 from anywhere in the United States. The Crisis Text Line will connect you with a trained Crisis Counselor.
  • National Alliance on Mental Health (@namiorg) offers free support and resources for those who are struggling. NAMI can be reached Monday through Friday, 10 am - 6 pm EST at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or by email at info@nami.org.

Take care of yourselves, Tumblr. Wash your hands well, practice keeping a safe distance from others, only wear a mask if you believe you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms and could infect others (or are immunocompromised yourself), and remember to fact check everything that you see. Head on over to @world-wide-what for a refresher on what fake news looks like and how it spreads. Pass those tips onto others when you see them accidentally spreading false information.

One of the few trends in the modern gaming I totally approve of is that Jacked Space Marines seem to have lost most of their footing as the default male protagonists to the agressive new challenger: Sad Murder Dads

Okay, so apparently there are only 200 employees that work on tumblr and with around 452 mil blogs that’s like one employee per 2.2 mil users

man, if this place is a jungle that’s probably because that’s a lot of freaking kids for one babysitter woah

me trying to keep my 2.2 mil users happy and entertained:

Here’s a year’s worth of photos of momo from 22 countries in 2 minutes. It’s funny. If i pause this video at any frame I can usually place myself in the exact moment and location I took it. It’s rather transcendent. I recall the people that were around, the feeling in the air, how close I might have been to whichever sea. And yet gravity pulled us equally. All the same. And his connection to me, our bond, resonated an intense normalcy that guides us every day.

Indie Game Spotlight: Celeste

We’re back! This week’s Indie Game Spotlight is a real beauty. Celeste (@celestegame ) is a narrative-driven game that focuses on the story of Madeline. The goal? Help her survive her inner demons on a journey to the top of Celeste Mountain.

It’s a real treat of a gaming experience, which is why we were so excited to interview co-creator and programmer Noel Berry about this award-winning game.

The one year anniversary of Celeste is coming up soon. How does it feel?

It’s been a pretty wild year. The support and reactions we’ve received from everyone has been overwhelming.

I personally hadn’t released a commercial game like this before and was under the assumption that when you finished a game it was “done” and you’d move onto new things, but there’s a surprising amount of post-launch work. At this point though we’re all excited to dive into the next project and hopefully make something cool :D

What influenced the story behind Celeste?

A lot of the story was influenced from personal experiences. When we first started Celeste it didn’t have much of a story—we knew it was about a young woman struggling to climb a mountain, and that the player’s experience of playing through the game would kind of mimic her own challenging adventure, but that was it. As the game grew, Matt [Thorson] (our Director) began writing dialog to work in some of the gameplay mechanics. This grew very organically until it was obvious that the story was going to play a really significant role, and a lot of the earlier chapters were iterated on to make it all flow.

Making video games can be extremely tiring, how do you keep yourself from burning out?

Yeah, this is tricky—it can be easy to get invested in a project and start spending all your waking hours working on it, especially when you work for yourself. We generally just tried our best to watch out for each other and make sure we all took breaks. Taking time off is important not only for yourself but it can help give perspective and ideas on something you might be hung up on. We also really feel that crunching decreases the quality of the work you’re doing and tried our best to avoid it—though we definitely went too hard for the last month of the project.

Are there any interesting stories to how you created a certain character?

The “Part of You” introduced in Chapter 2 started off as a gameplay mechanic—a ghostly figure chasing you through a strange tower, but as Matt worked on the story she grew organically into one of the most important aspects of the game and really ended up driving the entire story.

What’s the significance behind strawberries?

When Matt and I first made the original Celeste over the course of four days, it was created in a “Fantasy Console” called PICO-8 which had a very limited choice of 16 colors and small screen-size. We wanted a collectable that felt kind of like old arcade games, and strawberries fit the palette and size the best. We thought having them give you points that were meaningless would be funny.

What genre of game would you like to make next?

We feel very comfortable in the 2D platforming space, but that might also be a good reason to try something totally different. I’ve always felt something inspired by Animal Crossing would be really interesting to play around with, but that’s pretty outside our usual wheelhouse. Who knows!

Ready to dive into Celeste? Make sure to give their Tumblr a follow! Celeste is available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, XBox One, and Steam and Itch.io for Win/Mac/Linux! Phew.

2008 was a better time…

That one time the whole nation got rickrolled but no one was mad about it bless

OH YES this was BEAUTIFUL

Happy 8-year anniversary to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade that got Rickrolled

This legendary event happened 10 years ago now!

That was ten years ago?!?!

This internet feels small, and it’s shrinking every day as its algorithms make everything feel increasingly the same. Amid all this, Tumblr has been a safe harbor of delightful, weird, and deeply human stuff, presented using the radical system known as reverse chronological order. This shouldn’t be rocket science, and yet here we are: Somehow, Tumblr is the only social media platform I use that just shows me the posts from people I follow, in order of when they were posted. The further I scroll, the older posts get. And that’s beautiful. Algorithms don’t try to anticipate what I want to see, and neither is my feed determined by the whims of a random group of people who can up- or downvote things into oblivion.

hey guys, i wrote some words about tumblr.

Hey there, followers. We’ve gotten a lot of messages over the last few days about Tumblr’s updated Terms of Service. I wrote my personal thoughts in the opinion piece above.

So well thought out and well worded. Bless this post.
