People really need to realise that “media can affect real life” doesn’t mean “this character does bad things so people will read that and start doing bad things” and actually means “ideas in fiction especially stereotypes about minority groups can affect how the reader views those groups, an authors implicit prejudices can be passed on to readers”

certain things are going to stick with you and remind you of trauma besides the trauma itself because you didn’t experience that trauma in a soundless black void. there were things you probably focused on to get through that experience: something on the wall, a smell, a sound…and those will trigger memories.

The majority of my immediate fam works for hospitals and had no idea this was a thing. I find that insane but not at all surprising. Of course, there are probably all sorts of loopholes or requirements depending on the hospital or what sorta medical insurance you have. This might be helpful to check out.

for those who don’t recognize all of these names, here’s the works that they’re known for:

just for reference, obata mentored watsuki alongside yabuki, while oda, takei, suzuki, and ito were all mentored by watsuki in turn. this man is deeply connected in the shounen mangaka community and the ongoing support of his peers should be a wake-up call about the way pedophilia is regarded among prominent shounen authors.

Nobuhiro Watsuki, creator of Rurouni Kenshin, is a convicted paedophile, as is Toriko creator Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro. They were caught soliticing teenaged girls for sex as well as possessing child exploitation material—not your run of the mill hentai, but videos of real minors tricked into sexual situations or outright being sexually abused on film. More explicit accounts explain that Shimabukuro paid ¥80,000 to meet up with a 16 year old girl under a pseudonym, admitting he had done the same with three other girls before; authorities found “dozens” of dvds in Watsuki’s possession depicting girls under 15…and Watsuki admitted that he “likes girls aged from late elementary school to the second year of junior high school […] I like the nudity of children, I bought [the dvds].”

These are not old occurrances. Shimabukuro was convicted in 2002, and Watsuki in 2018.

Let’s put this into perspective: possessing small amount of cannabis in Japan nets a five year criminal sentence, and medications considered over-the-counter in several countries are banned in Japan if they contain substances like codeine. Shimabukuro was sentenced to two years in prison but received a four year suspension and walked free. Watsuki paid a ¥200,000 fine (1,780 USD) and did no jail time at all.

Shimabukuro got successful with Toriko some years later and even a television adaptation, while Watsuki, caught in autumn of 2017, was back working for Shonen Jump in April 2018 and Kenshin’s Hokkaido Arc slated for a June resumption. Weekly Shonen Jump offered no explanation for the brief suspension in publication except to offer a vague apology for “inconveniencing [their] readers,” and Watsuki’s statement was even more coy, saying “I deeply apologize for causing trouble and worrying everyone. I will do my sincere best.” Oda is currently spearheading a pr campaign to promote Watsuki via artwork, ads (seen above), and interviews. The artists supporting him believe that he has already paid appropriately for his crime and are trying to support him as his apprentices, as people who look up to him and want to see his work continue.

Oda has also done several collaborative (and recent) artworks with Shimabukuro.

It’s tempting to point at this as an example of the manga and anime industry being inherently morally rotten—as a hotbed of paedophiles who draw disgusting things as well as engage in the exploitation of children. The truth is that this is merely a manifestation of a wider Japanese problem…of a culture that many Japanese people argue is deeply misogynistic and apathetic to the struggles of women, children, foreigners/minorities, the LGBT community, etc. Child prostitution is practiced as a way for some schoolgirls to earn money (joshi kōsei), as a major source of revenue for the yakuza, and even barely skirted around in some hostess clubs and certain maid cafés. Minors who are raped suffer under a justice system that places the presumption of guilt on the defendant and argues that not struggling against a rapist means places a lesser degree of guilt against them. That’s not even getting into the government regularly turning a blind eye towards American soldiers prowling Japan for women and children.

My boss once shared a great story about that. This happened when he was in a layover in North Carolina back when the “War on Christmas” bullshit was first becoming prominent. He had gone to get a pack of cigarettes, and after he paid for it:

“Merry Christmas.” “Happy holidays.” “No. I said Merry Christmas.” “Do you know what Hanukkah is about?” “No, what?” “Some people tried to make us worship their ways, so we rose up and killed them. Happy Hanukkah.”

Being a lesbian feels so claustrophobic.  When you’re a lesbian there is nothing you can have for your own.  

You can’t define yourself with words because they will be appropriated.  "Gay" is an umbrella term.  You’re gatekeeping if you ask bi/pan women note to call themselves “lesbians.”  "Femme" is just a synonym for “feminine.”  

Your sexuality is commodified and sold to men as a grotesque distortion of your experiences.  Lesbian love gets repackaged as a sexy little fetish designed for palatability to the men we will never want.  Every inch of your body is public property and must be up for discussion.  Same with your sex life.  They will ask if you scissor, if you use strap ons, what sex with dildos is like.  Once someone came up to a girlfriend and I in pubic and asked her what my genitals tasted like.  If you try to find other women to date you quickly encounter the het couples and het-partnered women who want you to be their exciting sex toy for the night.  

You are scrutinized at all times.  When you walk in public with your girlfriend they scream at you that you’re lesbians, that you’re dykes, because they want you to know that you are always being watched and you are unsafe. 

You join LGBTQ+ communities only to find that people become angry if you talk about lesbians instead of “queer women.” They tell you that being a lesbian is a privilege, that your sexuality ought to be fluid, that your experiences don’t matter.  You are invalidated at every turn.  In death they might snatch away the final dignity of letting you die as a lesbian – look at what has happened to Sally Ride.

You can’t have your body.  You can’t have your sexuality.  You can’t have your privacy.  You can’t even name your experiences.  There is no space, no language, no tiny scrap of anything that will ever be yours.  

Trans women are unstoppable because we have access to all the secret esoteric Boy Scout knowledge but are no longer bound by the moral constraints of the Boy Scout Oath.
