Super useful tip for people with large heads too!! Thanks :D

working in a library, i encounter a lot of people who are in the process of filling out important forms, sending important faxes, and copying important documents. and the more important these things are, the more stressful, meaning i end up assisting a lot of really stressed people with a lot of really stressful paperwork, and have thus developed the ultimate line to immediately validate and empathize with their situation

“they don’t make it easy, do they?”

i nearly always use this line at some point in the conversation & it works without fail, because there is ALWAYS a they and they are ALWAYS not making it easy. you don’t have to specify who “they” are. you don’t even need to have an approximate idea of their role in this process.

job application? disability paperwork? insurance documents? financial aid paperwork? in any situation, the person visibly relaxes & enthusiastically agrees, because someone understands their plight: they are out there & they are NOT making it easy

life actually gets better when you leave the house consistently btw like im serious

if you don't know where to go, just wander! go to the store and don't buy anything, go to the library just to sit and do whatever you were going to do at home, go to a park and just walk around/sit outside for a bit (weather permitting, of course)

just put some headphones in and walk around the block a couple times if you really have nothing else to do, just getting a bit of air and change of scenery is so good for you

me the first few weeks of forcing myself to go on daily walks (it gets better tho)

i really need tumblr to learn the concept of “if you physically cannot do this then this post is not talking about you” because jesus christ.

calling my lover "mine" but not in the way that my toothbrush or notebook are mine, mine in the way my neighborhood is mine, and also everybody else's, "mine" like mine to tend to, mine to care for, mine to love. "mine" not like possession but devotion.

y’all realize you can riot and organize AND vote right? like it’s not either or

i’m so sick of this “give up on voting and just riot” mindset like y’know you can vote to try and stop more of these chucklefucks from gaining power AND ALSO riot and protest and organize in fact it’s ENCOURAGED that you do BOTH

Agree.. ppl are all upset that voting makes them ~complicit in the system~ but like it or not we are all In the Fucking System right now with people actively using it to make our lives materially worse. So we can try to vote for harm reduction within the system, instead of letting the system steamroll our human rights without any resistance. And once you’ve voted to keep Transphobe McAntisemite out of your local office, you can still protest and do mutual aid and build a strong community that is capable of existing outside the system.

Voting is not enough but it undeniably gets shit done

Avatar

The reason it is framed as a dichotomy is because rioting and protest-related crimes are felonies, meaning if you are convicted you lose your voting rights even if you don’t serve any jail time. This is obviously especially true for minorities and marginalized groups who those in power don’t want voting.

So yeah, for a lot of people it is deciding between voting and protesting.

And also, I can see getting disenfranchised as a voter. On my own ballot there were many offices where no one runs against the republican and even one where the Republican was the less fascist candidate. Why vote when you don’t really have a choice?

But this is why ranked voting and proportional representation is very important to fix the US voting model. Also ending gerrymandering, but that’s already considered unconstitutional by most.

Felony disenfranchisement is a huge problem, but it's not a thing in most US states—just southern red states for the most part.

Gov. Beshear in KY restored voting rights to over 100,000 felons, but before that nearly 10% of the kentucky population was disenfranchised (and 24% of the Black population)

And like no offense is meant but this is exactly *why* I and others emphasize the importance of voting—for the sake of others who can't.

Note that the original post said nothing about the USA, but nonetheless this is basically a USA-specific discussion, since the USA makes it actively difficult to vote in ways most other countries do not.

Discouraging people from voting is an active part of the oppressive system here. There's a reason why republicans want to introduce more hoops voters need to jump through to participate. There's a reason why republicans want to require more paperwork and close down polling locations, because deterring people from voting is part of the strategy.

Remember the uproar over mail-in voting? It's because mail-in voting makes it possible for people to vote when they otherwise could not make it to the polls. Election Day is one day here, it's not a national holiday, and when it requires you to physically travel to a polling location (that is open during the work day), that simply deters disabled people (who might not be able to go to a polling location) and working class people (who might be at work all day) from voting

Voting got a pro-trans person on the school board here. In Oklahoma. GODDAMN FUCKING VOTE, it makes a difference. So what if you hate everyone? So what if nobody's perfect and the "left" is just centrist, really? You can make changes, still, and sometimes the ones you make locally are easiest to make, and make a shitton of difference. Electing that one person might save lives. Hope y'all understand that sitting stuff out can make progress harder by not controlling who gets into politics before they've become cancerous.

They wouldn't be trying to stop you if they weren't scared of what you might do.

So our cat Ravioli sometimes does this thing we've started calling a Ravioli jumpscare where he'll hide next to a door or behind a piece of furniture and wait for us to pass next to him and jump at us lifting both his front paws in the air. So sometimes I'll be working on the living room while my husband is in the bedroom and he'll notice the cat crouching down next to the door and he'll be like "babe can you come in for a sec? The cat wants to jumpscare you"

I think the best most human thing in the world is strangers doing a silly thing together

Examples:

- guy at work "Yes, and -" ing the bit me and my coworker were doing where we pretended to be owners of a fantasy medieval tavern not minimum wage retail staff

- at the gay club when Die Young by Kesha came on and two hundred people, all dancing and drinking separately, jumped up and down to make the "- beat of the drums *STOMP STOMP*" as loud as possible

- person who watched me stomp round the beach singing a made up song about breakfast foods to name a cat after and suggested more breakfast foods that would be good cat names

- guy who started a dance off with everyone across the road while waiting for the lights to change

- very tiny girl at the pharmacy interviewing everyone in the queue and every single one of us in turn sat down and answered this toddler's questions like we were on Letterman

The three pillars of humanity, in no particular order, are Joy, Absurdity, and Sharing

You can tell the exact mental state of Dick Grayson based on the music he plays in the car

His entire family monitors his listening habits, and if it's anything but things from the list of genres and artists that Dick normally likes while provably mentally stable, they get concerned.

Tim, texting the group chat without Dick in it: Hey, guys, just needed to let y'all know that Dick picked me up today, and he put on an NF song in the car.

Barbara: Fuck, he's depressed.

Steph: Isn't he always?

Barbara: No, like--more than usual.

-

A week later.

Jason: Y'all, I'm with him rn and he's blasting S&M in the training room. One of you bitches--and I will find out who--triggered some body image issues, and now he's sexualizing himself to cope.

Tim: Did one of you guys call him ugly or smth???

Steph: I would never. I'm not a mean person, unlike you guys.

Damian: Why did you immediately assume it was one of us?

Jason: Because y'all are terrible people.

Tim: I'm not taking this from a literal gang leader.

Jason: But I admit, that is a bit of a jump on my part. It could've been any of Dick's trash friends that he, for some reason, keeps around, so that's on me.

Cass: Monitor him so he doesn't do anything drastic.

Barbara: Let me know if he starts compulsively thinking about becoming a stripper.

Jason: If that happens, there's no saving him.

-

After Dick returns from Spyral.

Duke: Now this just might be me, but I don't think I ever pegged Dick as a metalhead before he went off to work for Spyral.

Tim: Dear god.

Tim: Don't tell me he's listening to SOAD.

Duke: What even is that.

Jason: System of a Down

Duke: Oh, yeah, it's that.

Tim: NOOOOOOO

Duke: What does that mean???

Barbara: He's self-destructive.

Steph: Isn't he normally?

Barbara: No, like--I mean yes, but more explosively.

Jason: His main goal is to blow up...

Barbara: Don't.

Steph: aND THEN ACT LIKE HE DON'T KNOW NOBODY

Jason: HAH HAH HAH HAH

Barbara: This is serious.

-

Steph: He's listening to vocaloid. That's....so odd??? @Damian did you have anything to do with this?

Tim: oh my god

Damian: The answer to this question is of high importance: what song is it?

Steph: Do you think I can speak Japanese??

Damian: Ask.

Steph: omg fine.

Steph: He says it's "Assassin Princess" by Mitchie M.

Tim: Hold on lemme listen to this shit

Damian: It's a good song.

Jason: Okay, but what does that tell us?

Damian: It's not a song I ever played for him.

Jason: So you're telling me he's listening to vocaloid independent of you?

Damian: It would appear so.

Jason: Oh, that's bad.

Tim: The song's about a spy and her partner murdering her ex-boyfriend who betrayed her.

Steph: He's feeling vengeful.

Jason: Oh, that's really bad.

-

Cass: He's playing One Direction.

Barbara: Honestly?? Chances are, he's fine.

Duke: Agreed. He's playing "What Makes You Beautiful", so I doubt it's anything.

Duke: Now if he starts playing shit from their solo careers, we have a problem.

Friendly reminder that the reason you feel so much better is because of your meds, don’t stop taking them unless you talk to your doctor first, you really do need them, I promise.

Around June I stopped taking my eye medication because I hadn’t had a problem with my eyes in months. I got really lazy about doing it; then I stopped them altogether.

Turns out, the reason I stopped having problems with my eyes was because I was religiously taking my medication. Whodathunk. Now I have to work to get back to the place I was before I decided I was “better” (I wasn’t!).

If you thought this post was just about anti-depressants or lithium, it could be! For me, this post is about eyedrops, for you it might be about antibiotics, or it might be about zoloft. Whatever it is, please consider talking to your doctor before making a sudden shift to stop taking it. It’s not bad to be on medication. It’s not bad to need it.

…and on a related note, do not let anyone tell you that because you start feeling worse if you don’t take your medication, that means you’re “addicted”. That is not how addiction works.

Okay everyone reblog this version

we seriously need to bring back the concept of “despite its flaws i still enjoy it” instead of ‘cancelling’ every fuckin thing in sight

We also need to stop insisting that everyone enjoying flawed things must put 25 cents in the Problematic Jar and recite all its failings from memory.

If I just may add: we really need to stop pretending that “I’m a Good person, ergo the thing I like is PERFECT and if you criticize it you’re an ENEMY”. You can enjoy stuff AND keep your sense of critical thinking.

Fascinating results *places a banana in the same spot*

Real scientists would keep putting an orange in the same spot to make sure the results are consistent before moving on to other fruits or different spots.

The only valid response to this post.

We’re working up the complexity levels of fruit until we feel there is enough evidence to support the judicious placement of a volunteer twink
