Fate/Stay Night or the Fate universe in general? I dont think I've ever seen you talk about it so I'm guessing you might not know it

King Arthur's whole pussy

So, like, it started out as a porn game, but eventually got an anime adaptation that took out the porn bits. There's a schlubby, Ordinary High School Boy™ who hooks up with a anime girl version of King Arthur. I think there are also other historical/mythological figures who are romanceable/fuckable in the porn game version of the story. Sword fighting is also important. That's all I know about it.

I love that dashboard osmosis has basically given you the meme understanding of FSN, this is so funny

The meme being as follows -

Unsuspecting gamer in 2004: oh boy a new H game! Can't wait to play as this relatable generic protagonist and sex up cute girl Arthur and my hot classmates!

Kinoko Nasu: Wonderful, welcome! To get to the sex scenes, please first spend 20-30 hours per route on deadly battles, magic system worldbuilding, and exploring the characters' horrific traumas, all in loving detail. Your reward will be a couple hours total of bad porn I either didn't care about or had no experience with writing. But by this point you will be too invested in the actual story to care, so it's fine!

will never be over this bit from alec’s interlude. one of the most underrated funniest Character Thinking Some Shit So Oblivious It’s Unhinged moments.

alec Wondering, sometimes, if just maaaaaybe possibly slightly his father, Notorious Murder-Rapist Emotionally Physically and Sexually Abusive Supervillain Heartbreaker, gave him a wee tiiiiny bit of psychological issues, is approximately as ridiculous as the time taylor apologizes for crying during an apocalypse.

[alec voice] wait shit aisha do you think maybe this is, like, a childhood trauma thing? by fuck, who would have guessed. i thought i just kind of sucked

After leaving the tab open and procrastinating on reading it for uhhhhhh 5 months, I finally got around to reading VesalBlood ALTERNE: Diesem Fernen Traum (or what's out of it so far, at least!)

It's kinda very fucking good.

The kind of good where I have to tack on "well, it's very good but it's also kinda weird in a way where I get if it's not to your taste", but it very much is to my taste so... Hell yeah.

(That kind of good is the best kind. Plus, everyone should share my taste anyway!)

Definitely recommend checking it out!

Excited for more ALTERNE and even more excited for future works in the setting now than I was before.

Seriously, it kicks ass.

and of course, the actual joke at the bottom of himegil is that getting ambushed by the concept of female gilgamesh in the middle of an otherwise fairly normal zero x prototype fanfic feels like some sort of psychic attack

especially if you thought you were finally in the clear after getting past the character images, scrolled down past the explanation of the logo and background runes, and got jumpscared by the final image in the blogpost

it also includes a plea to read fate/stay night if your only exposure to it was watching zero

Oh my friend got this CD and uploaded the whole thing to youtube. It's not subbed but still pretty interesting

i mean don't get me wrong i'm a bigtime ward hater and i agree amy probably would have been a more interesting character without the rape implications, but in that screenshot he clearly says he won't write about rape *directly* or like in-depth. he's always been okay with having it implied / offscreen (see: regent, the ABB probably, some other examples i forget). i know people had been pointing it out years before ward even started

"The obvious implications/end results of Heartbreaker's powers are as close as I'm going to get to the subject" -- heartbreaker, regent, and references to gangs doing sex trafficking are all *much* more "offscreen" than having a major character be sexually assaulted during the events of a main story arc, and if that's what it was always supposed to be, you'd think he would've been clearer; he didn't have to go back and confirm what actually happened in any of those other "implied" cases.

Avatar
(i do think he did a bad job of selling the Dark Implications™️ in carols interlude if 80% of readers missed it, also that amys character arc of accepting responsibility in worm was undeniably retconned to make her the antagonist here)

all true! i guess what it comes down to is just, amy dallon isn't real. if this were real life, and amy claimed that she didn't assault victoria, and later on victoria came forward with proof that she did, obviously amy's version of events was never true. but ward didn't materialize out of the ether, it was written by a man marinating in six years of fan reactions and his own reactions to those reactions, and taken in context with every other detail of ward clearly created as a direct response to some aspect of the fandom, and with the complete warping of logic the story has around amy in general, it just doesn't make sense to me to try to take amy explicitly literally sexually assaulting victoria as something that just came about naturally and not a deliberate choice by an author trying to create a specific response, which is not the same angle he was taking when he sat down to write amy in worm. amy in worm and amy in ward are both equally "real" characters in the sense that any character can be, but the latter has no power to change the former.

the problem with saying why I like Yuusha Goikkou no Kaerimichi is that it's a oneshot and even talking about why it's good would immediately spoil the fun

Avatar

but you SHOULD read it

Damn you weren't kidding, that oneshot can sure

you know that one scene with saber in the final act of Heaven's Feel? the movie absolutely should have kept the face shirou makes in it. this is a nitpicky point but it's a good expression

extreme Heaven's Feel spoilers below the break, go read the vn if you've already watched the movies, it's got different stuff in it

you've gotta stop now. you're rapidly approaching the chronological kara no kyoukai

so looking from the perspective of like, a random mid-level prt cape in brockton bay ~2011, right. you know marquis and heartbreaker were both villains active semi-locally in the 90s with powers related to manipulating human biology. heartbreaker is known to have a lot of kids and there's no way marquis wasn't sexually active. marquis has a royalty-themed name and dressing style. heartbreaker's power doesn't apply to himself.

and there are also these two teen capes in town, regent and panacea, both of mysterious origin (regent just showed up out of nowhere and panacea is an adoptee whose powers clearly didn't bud off the dallons'), both with powers related to manipulating human biology. regent has a royalty-themed name and dressing style. panacea's power famously doesn't work on herself.

...

like. regent was totally doing it on purpose right.

regent: knows and he's doing it on purpose. way cooler to let people think he's marquis's kid. won't admit it if you ask him directly though

panacea: someone makes the incorrect guess in front of her and she takes it as fact without asking the dallons. everything plays out exactly the same with her thinking she's doomed to be evil and hurting victoria but when she's like it's finally happened...i really am no better...i have to go face my true father... [starts trudging north] carol is like oh, marquis? and she's like who the fuck is marquis

marquis: some new inmate brings up his "son" and he bluescreens trying to figure out what they're talking about. when amy finally shows up he tentatively he/hims her

heartbreaker: hears that there's another awol heartbroken girl who's not cherie, does a headcount, and goes ah, jean-paul is un transvestite now? hm...freaque. and then goes back to making toddlers fight or whatever it is he does for fun

I will never not get annoyed over people saying that Brian/Grue joining the Heroes was the obvious and easiest choice out there. Admittedly, the WOGs expand more on it, but even with what we get from Arc 4 when he talks about his trigger event, I can't comprehend how anyone wouldn't see the reasons for him not wanting to join the government sponsored heroes.

Basing this off memory, but to sum it up, Brian goes to him moms house after getting a text from Aisha asking for help. He finds her in some poor condition ( I don't think he goes into detail and it may not matter if he did cause he's not telling the full truth here) and when he tries to take her back to his dad's, their step-dad gets in thew ay and doesn't let them leave. Brian proceeds to beat him up, take his sister back, and gets powers sometime in between.

Then, he, aisha, and their dad go to the police the very next morning. They explain what happened and Brian still describes how he almost got sent to jail. Only aisha backing him up and his step-dad missing an asshole anonymous meeting saved him. And he still got some months of community service. Like, in my opinion he did the right thing every step of the way and still almost got screwed over.

Sometime later, (not immediately cause he's 14 to 15 when he gets powers) he decides to try and take care of aisha by being a villain to get enough money/backing to do it.

That's all described in arc 4. Now we get into the WOGs. Again, basing this off memory, but I can try to find them later.

First, Brian lied about his trigger, a little bit. General event still happened, but when he claimed he didn't know who the man was besides being his mom's new boyfriend, he lied. He knew that man bc it was the same boyfriend who had abused him in the past. And his mom brought him back and let him interact with his sister. Add in his mom's other problems and his dad's ("I wouldn't describe him as abusive") there was a fair bit of emotions Brian was going through that he didn't share. But at the end of the day, every adult in his life failed him and his sister. He wouldn't be willing to extend his trust as easily.

Second, a different WOG described Brian getting into crime in a panic bc aisha had done something afterward that led to her needing to get bailed out of something with money (again, going off memeory) so even if he wanted to join the wards he'd be doing it with a record. Presumably he later decided he might as well go all in on it and get aisha into a safer environment than both his parents. He probably thought it may help with keeping her out of trouble as well if she wasn't around two people who didn't know how to raise kids (not that he did either, but he probably thought he couldn't do worse).

Third, by WOG he did actually consider the wards, but after researching them decided they wouldn't be worth it. Admittedly this was moreso bc of his own hangups with commitment. Bc telling the big organization your power and identity then trying to bail wouldn't really work out, but apparently it was still preferable to a career of crime. It's not like the Protectorate would actually have authority to take a child away from their parents anyway without major proof, especially if that kid isn't a parahuman themself.

Fourth, the undersiders were generally a low risk high reward chance until Taylor joined and brought them her bad luck. They operated for a year and only got into some mild skirmishes with Lung and them being escape artist didn't have an issue with him. Besides that, they made a shot ton of money on top of the 2grand their sponsor gave them.

Fifth, I don't think we ever learned what the time table was for Coil helping out with Brian getting custody, especially given how suspicious Brian was of their mysterious boss and his motives preleviathan. Maybe Coil admitted to knowing Brian's problems and offered a solution at the start. Maybe Brian opened up with it as a condition to him joining. Or maybe after a few months of getting 2grand a relatively easy missions Brian decided to trust the boss who hadn't screwed him and ask for the money to be given to him in a legal paycheck for better chance at custody. I say that last option bc Brian is supposed to be the careful pragmatic one who thinks about his choices and doesn't do the crazy option unless bug girl decides to go full throttle and he begrudgingly goes along. And giving his personal details and a sure fire way of blackmail isn't excalty the pragmatic choice.

Tldr: he has to have some pretty big distrust of authority cause shifty parents and probably shotty police and by WOG became a criminal in a panic before going full in on it. Cause he was, again, like 15 years old.

Now, the argument for him joining the wards is that the Heroes/PRT could have snapped their fingers and given everything Brian would want. And seeing the deal Madcap got I can definitely see the idea behind it, but there are a few problems with that. A) Brian wouldn't know shit about how desperate the Heroes are bc they don't advertise that. B) I'm not sure how much power they would actually have over taking kids away from unhealthy environments cause laws and shit would probably limit that. C) as stated above, he says he almost got jailed for hurting his step-dad so I don't see him liking authority at this stage, no matter how just he was in the eyes of the law for it. D) Brian's own issues and that he's a 15 year old so he won't see the world as a perfectly rational being.

Speaking of Anime Discourse ,Trixie/The Golden Witch, formerly Digibro, retired from Youtube last week. For most people this is just an obit for a long-gone career - Trixie’s videos haven’t been reaching audiences for years now. Extremely happy she is moving on; in the ‘goodbye’ video its harsh to watch how much discussion of money is the focus of the long downward spiral. Which is not a criticism, paying bills is good, but its obvious that 95% of the actual drive for making anime videos vanished, replaced with whack-a-mole attempts to chase the ghost of lost glories from ~2017. Real “Romanov-adjacent in 1920′s Paris, bedecked in whatever furs and jewels fit in the suitcase lugged onto the last steamer out of Petrograd, smoking away the years at the Ritz bar awaiting the inevitable Restoration” vibes, even down the mismatched furs. It was never going to work, primarily because it never works for almost anyone and the lack of passion is openly transparent. Absolutely quit, there is nothing for you here, I hope you go be happy.

Though it is funny to hear a decade+ YouTuber discuss subscriber counts like they are meaningful metric, like she needed to ‘recapture’ an audience that is still there due to a 300k subscriber count. Those account aren’t real, if your videos are getting 3k views its because the ‘active’ accounts ditched, all that is left are dead emails & spambots juicing a number. Another ghost from the past, hard to admit that the one thing you do have means nothing. I am not trying to roast here, I just don’t want to pretend that this whole process wasn’t a negative thing. Her trajectory in life was tragic, and it was painful to watch.

At least she admitted she got ridiculously addicted to weed for a time there, heartening for the obvious to finally be acknowledged.

Still for how sad the last chapter was, as Digibro Trixie was one of the most influential anime YouTubers to ever do it. Youtube has era’s, and starting in like ~2014 there was a big upswing in higher-effort ‘analytical’ videos, and Digi was absolutely a leader of the pack the anime space. She brought the caustic, humor-laden but actually-substantiative analytical style of Red Letter Media to the anime sphere and blended it with gonzo-inflected, despair-laden personal rants. The peak of her legacy is of course turning the tide on Sword Art Online, which was an immensely popular anime in 2012 but Digi’s viral 2014 review started a floodgate of counter-appraisals in the western fandom such that a few years later liking SAO was the hipster stance. Pedantic Romantic even documented the ‘digi effect’ on SAO & the fandom in a video, which is exactly the kind of investigative journalism we need more of.

At the time Digi spawned waves of imitators and also was the center of a crew of other creators, people like Endless Jess & Best Guy Ever, she was a member of the PCP crew, and there were others less directly connected but still strongly influenced like Steak Bentley, who’s video on Cowboy Bebop & the West is still one of my absolute favourites. Digi was really good about highlighting other interesting anime YouTubers and giving you an idea of what could be out there, being responsible for half of their viewership, and through that building a sense of community.

Of course I chose those specific names tactically - they are mostly gone now. Some off the internet entirely, others occasionally appearing once a year with a tweet or a video, others pivoting to video games or Twitch streaming, etc. Just like that era of YouTube is now gone, Anime YouTube still exists of course, but it isn’t just the names that have changed; the content, the style, the market, expectations, all moved on. Even Trixie’s later content showed that, making fun of the depression-inflected rage she used to exhibit at properties like High Guardian Spice, because while rage-merchants are a thing on Youtube, oh for sure they are a thing, its now its own thing, not part of the analytical-emotional melting pot in the same way anymore (and pretty inextricably tied to politics). And we are in the golden era of western creators doing serious dives into production histories, industry reporting, etc, but that’s too serious, there is also no place for Digi there either.

Or I am wrong, and I just don’t know the new generation doing it out there. Would love to see them. From my vantage point, Anime YouTube’s “Gonzo” era is over, and Digi was the center of it. Maybe itll come back. But its certainly over for Trixie, and I am glad she is finally letting the ghosts fizzle out in the wires of the internet in peace.

ward (book about how the prison industrial complex is necessary and good) has two of its main characters go to prison and then just walk out, consequence free, when it becomes too much of an inconvenience. i like this a lot. its actually really good. cause of how it's funny.
