I think you're pretty great.

Benjamin. 21. He/Him. Gets emotionally attached to ficitonal characters. Absolute clown for poetry and queer love stories.

Random socializing tip: Tell people when they’ve had a positive impact on your life!

e.g.: “Hey, remember when I asked you for advice on X? That was really helpful, I tried it and now (insert what has improved)”

“You kept gushing about (insert series/book/movie/recipe) and made it sound really appealing, so I checked it out and I really liked it!”

“Thank you for letting me vent recently, telling you what bothered me really helped me to work through it / helped me see it from another perspective / gave me the courage to address it with the person I was talking about.”

It helps people see their own strong points, it deepens your relationships, it makes the people in your life feel appreciated and special and it can give you warm fuzzy feelings!

Win/win all around!

Last night I had a dream I woke up to find that my house had been turned into a Smart House with every wall being a digital screen including the roof so I could see it even laying on bed and the Siri voice said “Don’t worry. You are perfectly safe in your Apple Smart Home™️” knowing I have a BIG phobia of intruders especially at night and it continued with “Let’s explore the neighborhood from the comfort of your home” so it opened google maps and accidentally zoomed past a shitty jpeg of the girl from The Ring standing outside my house and it said “ignore that”. woke up laughing

It was not real, because it was a dream

AO3 was created deliberately as the place for taboo fanfiction that no one else wanted to host.

It was created in significant part in response to the spontaneous deletion of adult and queer content fanfic on other archives; specifically fanfiction.net and livejoural.com.

I cannot stress this enough. Fanfiction.net and livejoural.com straight up deleted users adult and queer content without warning, backup or recourse.

AO3 was created so that authors could host queer fic, porn, and transgressive adult material without the threat of deletion.

AO3 was created as the place for shipcest and underage fic.

If you want a clean archive with no taboo material, those archives exist. AO3 was created to be their alternative.

I'm not sure how exactly to phrase this, but it's been on my mind for awhile.

People often frame the debate around either being for or against certain types of fan content. Arguing that being pro ao3 = being pro (insert "evil" thing here).

Whereas to me the divide looks more like. "I do not enjoy x content or consider it immoral, so I will not create or consume x content" vs. "I do not enjoy x or consider it immoral, other people should be prevented from creating and consuming it".

Ao3 provides excellent tools to avoid content you don't want to see, for whatever reason. No one is making you look at fanfic that goes against your beliefs.

People against Ao3 are absolutely coming from the second perspective. And beyond being anti censorship, I just don't understand having the time or energy to make other people's fandom your moral obligation to control. It sounds utterly exhausting. You are not going to stop x content from existing. It's not your job to. You make choices about what you read or write, and ao3 tags are a great tool for that. You don't get to dictate other people's media/fandom consumption.

You hit the nail on the head with the point about them feeling a moral obligation to control. They operate upon the politics of disgust. This is disgusting, it should not exist, no one should ever think about, see it or even acknowledge it's existence. But disgust is so personal, so subjective. Person A is disgusted by Hydra Trash party fics. Person B is disgusted by the existence of trans people. Person C is disgusted by the mere idea of casual sex for pleasure instead of marital sex for the purpose of reproduction. Person D is disgusted by the existence of queer people. Person E is disgusted by interracial couples. Who gets to make the rules about which disgust is valid and which disgust is OK actually?

You can't base rules on such a shaky foundation. Disgust, like any emotion based system, is too fluid and too subjective to be a useful measure.

AO3 does not host illegal works. Despite the frothing claims of puriteens and the anti mob it is not actually a hotbed of pedophilia, bestiality and necrophilia. It's not a pipeline to having the moral fortitude of boiled pasta. It doesn't normalise any fucking thing, you rabid dingbats. You want the archive of moral purity and wholesome fics only? Do it. Go ahead, noone is stopping you. Put the energy and drive you are wasting in a useless crusade into forging the purity prevail archive.

Rally your pearl clutching feelings yakuza friendship groups and do something constructive instead of performative slacktivism. The archive was formed by fan groups wanting a safe space to store and share their fics. Literally nothing is making you use AO3 if it's so distasteful for you. Good luck with your pristine purity Archive with added censorship and malleable moral boundaries. You will all be a bit busy prechecking every word prior to publishing and actually I think it would be great for you to be so busy with the stuff you care so deeply about.

Instead of making posts about what people halfway across the world should do on a dying website, I'm going to link to organizations that you can donate to that can actually help.

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees. They provide immediate medical aid to those in great need, while also developing local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system.

Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association is a Palestinian non-governmental civil institution that works to support Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli and Palestinian prisons.

Samidoun is an international network of organizers and activists working to build solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in their struggle for freedom.

Refuser Solidarity Network provides crucial support to Israel's military refusers in the toughest of political circumstances. They provide funds for for demonstrations outside prison, for legal fees, for media campaigns that tell conscientious objector’s stories to the general public, for education programs for Israeli and American audiences about their important resistance to the occupation.

Feel free to reblog with links to other groups and other places people can donate to.

Realizing you can like people aesthetically without it dictating your sexuality is so liberating tbh. Like, one can adore, even be obsessed with, the looks of someone of the same sex and still be straight. One can find people beautiful, and handsome, and fascinating, and still be asexual. I can like the physical appearance of someone of the opposite sex and still be gay. Finding physical beauty in people doesn't equal to being physically, or sexually, or romantically attracted to them. Human beauty isn't inherently sexual. Just wanted to put it out there.

my favourite thing about all for the game has got to be the fact that the guy who spent three years in juvie, killed his mother and is on court-ordered mood stabilisers and the child of a serial killer who spent most of his life on the run and is also a pathological liar somehow manage to have the healthiest relationship i have ever read in a piece of media. literally wild
