Iceland commemorates first glacier that ‘died’ by climate change

A plaque’s been unveiled in Iceland to remember the first of its 400 glaciers to be lost to climate change. Okjokull glacier used to cover 15 square kilometres of mountainside and was 50 metres thick and now it’s barely 1 square kilometre and less than 15 metres deep. In 2014 it was officially declared ‘dead’, its memorial bears the inscription “a letter to the future”. It warns that all of Iceland’s glaciers are expected to disappear in the next two hundred years.
