Iterative Improvement

@iterativeimprovement / iterativeimprovement.tumblr.com

Small improvements, every day.

When your head hits the pillow tonight, remind yourself that you’ve done a good job. You are headed down your path at your own pace, and with every obstacle you are trying your utmost best. Be patient with yourself, and remember that big things are achieved not all at once, but one day at a time.

When Harvard professor Tom Lehrer was asked at the age of 84 by rapper 2 Chainz if he could sample his 60-year old song. Lehrer replied, “I grant you motherf*ckers permission to do this. Please give my regards to Mr. Chainz, or may I call him 2?”

Well where the fuckening is this song because I want it

executive dysfunction is telling yourself for two and a half hours that you need to shower bc you smell like your workplace and you absolutely Cannot do Anything Else until you shower, doing Any Other Thing before showering is illegal!!! but you still haven’t for some reason??? you’ve just been sitting on your bed in a towel scrolling tumblr for 2+ hours thinking “I need to shower right now immediately” and growing increasingly frustrated that you are still not clean and you haven’t eaten or done your laundry either

ok actually no I’m reblogging this because a) I am clean now (and I smell amazing, thank you), and b) I had a heckin Realize and I wanted to share it with y’all in the hopes it’ll help someone else with a brain like mine.

I figured something out about myself a long time ago– it’s only just now occurred to me that I was in fact solving a problem caused by executive dysfunction, and I haven’t been implementing this solution lately because my brain went “that’s a relatively new term to me and therefore a Different problem that requires a Different solution”. thanks a lot, brain.

anyway, long long ago, before I knew these fancy schmancy Official words, the problem, as I phrased it to myself, was such:

sometimes I get Stuck. I was doing something, or on my way to doing something, and then… I just. got stuck.

“Stuck” looks like refreshing my feed or dashboard repeatedly. or it looks like staring at a spot on the wall. or chewing my fingernails. or picking at a stubborn sticker. all the while, my brain drifts through various unrelated topics I wouldn’t be able to recall if asked. sometimes I can get Stuck for hours before realizing I am Stuck. sometimes I get so Stuck that I go to bed that way (feeling especially bad for being unproductive) and I have to just reset everything by sleeping.

one day I asked myself, “why is this happening? why am I stuck, right now, at this moment in time?” the answer, as it turns out, was pretty simple: I was trying to make a decision, and I got distracted. I haven’t moved forward because I haven’t answered that one question or made up my mind.

let me rephrase this in terms of executive dysfunction: many people have expressed that it feels like knowing you need to do a thing but not feeling “ready” to do it. many with ADHD may also be familiar with the feeling of needing things to be “just so” before you embark on a task- you need your setup to look a certain way, or you need to set a timer, or have the right music playing, etc.

when I get Stuck it’s often because I got lost somewhere in that setting-up process, and my brain took the opportunity to nyoom off into Distraction Town.

getting myself Unstuck is solved, 95% of the time, by tracing my steps back to the original decision I was trying to make- often something small and inane- and then troubleshooting from there. (out loud! verbal processing is totally punk.)

  • “what was I trying to do?”
  • “was I trying to decide between two things?”
  • (the answer’s usually yes.)
  • “what were they?”
  • “okay, let’s decide.
  • “okay, that’s settled. let’s move on.”
  • and then I am free as a bird to nyoom in the direction of The Thing I Wanted To Do All Along, in the amazingly disorganized, scattered, yet rapid-fire way that I do many things.

so!!! in the case of my first post, where I hadn’t showered for 2 hours? turns out I had been trying to decide what music to listen to in the shower. (another hack: my chances of getting Stuck while showering decrease by 75% if I have music playing to help me keep track of time.) I couldn’t immediately make up my mind, got lost in thought, got distracted, and drifted. once I stopped and asked- “why am I stuck?”-  then I remembered- “oh yeah! I wanted to listen to music”-  and then decided- “I want to listen to Daft Punk’s Discovery album”- I was finally heckin able to shower. and also eat, and also throw my clothes in the dryer.

and may I add I only zoned out once, during the slow part of “One More Time.” :P

I’m not saying this is a foolproof method. sometimes I don’t have a reason for being stuck, and that’s okay! I’m also not saying this is how every adhd brain works. it’s just how my brain works, and I’m sure there’s at least a few who can relate. for those few, I hope this helps!!

a lot of people are reblogging the original post without the update and leaving frustrated comments and that makes me sad! if I can find ways to hack my brain than so can you! executive dysfunction is a real and frustrating challenge, but don’t buy the lie that there’s no way to work with it or around it!!!

This sounds really useful and for some reason, I’m also really happy to find out that I’m not the only person who uses music to keep track of time

no offense but this image looks exactly like finn and rey and i’m counting on yall to use it in all your finnrey aesthetics from now on

edit: here’s where the picture is from

That’s super cute!

BABY-8!! D: D:

Guys, I made this short (50 seconds) video (unmute it but lower volume) showing a person struggling with executive dysfunction. NT people don’t tend to understand how it feels like to be unable to start/ do/ finish thing due to the executive dysfunction.. so I figured I’d make a short video that explain the frustration felt.

I think I’ve covered all aspects of executive dysfunction as given by Dr Tom Brown:

  1. Organizing, prioritizing and activating for tasks
  2. Focusing, sustaining and shifting attention to task
  3. Regulating alertness, sustaining effort and processing speed
  4. Managing frustration and modulating emotions
  5. Utilizing working memory and accessing recall
  6. Monitoring and self-regulating action

I showed it to my housemate and he said he found it quite melancholic which is what I wanted to show.

What do you guys think? Is it somewhat accurate?

Oh hey static. Yes. Yes, this is me. Also I mean like right now. I’m doing this NOW. Somebody halp.

Jeez, this... this resonates really hard. Is this me? Is this a thing I have?

i don’t want to achieve equality by sinking to men’s level, i want them to get on ours! why should i have to unlearn the conversational art of waiting my turn, unlearn sexual self-restraint, unlearn trust in others’ good intentions, unlearn the impulse to cater to others’ needs, just to have a chance at success among savages? why can’t the men learn some fucking manners so we can all conduct our affairs in a civilized manner? i shouldn’t have to stop saying sorry, you say sorry!

In the 80s when I was in my freshman year in college, they still had entirely separate mens and women’s dorms. I was in class waiting for a final to start and one of the guys was telling someone about how he had had to go into a women’s dorm to drop something off, and he was startled to see posters on the walls, flowers, curtains, etc. He said his men’s dorm had holes in the walls, things on fire, fights, guys walking around with open wounds and he just didn’t understand why they had to live like this. He said, “I want to live with the women, in civilization.”

Am reading Sisterhood of Spies, about women working for the OSS during WWII. One of the stories mentions that the women in London had a male visitor who would eat in their mess hall once a month. He was married and wasn’t interested in hitting on any of the women; he just wanted to eat in an atmosphere where people said “Please pass the butter,” instead of “PASS THE GODDAMNED GREASE”

I dated a guy who brought me along on group activities (movies, video game night, etc.) with four or five other male friends. Once I mentioned to one of the other guys that I hoped I wasn’t intruding on their “guy time” or some such. He got this sort of rueful look and said, “The truth is, I really like it when you’re here because it gives us a reason to act better. When it’s just guys, we all have to try to outdo each other with how vile we are.”

So the moral of these stories are men don’t even treat each other like human beings.

Me to my 6-year-old son: “You seem to like playing with the girls at school more than the boys. Why do you think that is?”

6-year-old son: “Sometimes I just don’t want to be pushed. It hurts and is mean. And the girls always pretend to be princesses or fun animals and stuff when they have tea parties. The boys just dump the tea all over the place. That’s just stupid and I don’t like wasting all that tea. It takes forever to make.”

Me: “Wow, I can understand why you’d rather play with the girls. The boys seem like they’re kind of rough.”

6-year-old son: “And when I play with the girls they make me the king because none of the other boys want to play tea party.”

Me: “Do you like being the king?”

6-year-old son: “Not really – I’d rather be a wizard, but it makes Georgia and Vivian happy.”

Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver except it’s playing from your neighbor’s radio that you can hear from your back porch, which you sit out on to relax in spite of the loud buzzing from the lightbulb and the hoards of moths that flock to it on summer evenings like this.

Why do you keep saying that?!

Heteronormativity in action.

Heya there, just dropping by again with more questions—hope you don't mind! How old are all the characters? Or at least, what's the order of their ages? Do any of them like musical theatre? Who on the Caldwell crew likes space the most? The least? Are any of the characters lgbt+? Dani is adorable and already one of my favorites. What made her want to study epigenetics? What did the other characters study in school, if they went? (And as a final note, I hope Charlotte's doing alright!)

I don’t mind at all! You ask great questions. :) I can answer a few of them here, but most will be answered in upcoming episodes of Girl In Space!

* X is in her late 20s, and Dani and Bae (the pilot, who’s only had a couple lines so far) are currently tied for youngest. I can’t tell you who is oldest without revealing some spoilers… ;)

* Out of all of the Caldwell Enterprises crew members, Captain Miles Chen probably likes space the most. For him, it’s both freedom and escape. Currently, Thor likes space the least, though there aren’t a lot of things Thor *does* like…

* There are several LGBT+ individuals in the story, which should become clear in upcoming episodes. I think it’s also safe to say that X hasn’t figured out her own identity yet — she’s never had any non-parental people around to be attracted *to*. Also, Kai is nonbinary — if you go back and listen carefully, they’re never referred to by anyone in the script as “he” or “she”. The voice that Kai  uses — which sounds more masculine on the gender spectrum — is built into the suit and is not Kai’s actual voice.

* Dani started out studying embryology and soon realized that she was fascinated by the invisible blueprints behind cell growth and development.

* In school, Kai was extremely good at physics, and Chance liked history. Perhaps surprisingly, Chen got really in to theater. Thor secretly loved choir, though she was also on the wrestling team and pretty much dominated. If X had gone to school, she would have probably liked studying everything, but her favorites would have been biology and poetry.

* Stay tuned for more on Charlotte’s status!
