i have seen only a few comments on youtube that evoked a similar feeling and i love them all
is anyone doing anything with outdoor CO2 concentrations and cognitive function
a few rationalists have mentioned this
that's probably about the most society will allocate to it for the next ten years
Most studies have only looked at concentrations above 1000ppm, but the outdoor global average is still below 500ppm, last time I checked, and the highest I've seen it outdoors regularly is ~560ppm when crossing over a major interstate highway.
Honestly, Blue Team getting excited about it now would just bundle it with their other global warming concern inputs, then weaken it by tying it to demands that don't make sense from a solution standpoint (but do make sense from a coalition politics rewards standpoint).
So it's probably better if it flies under the radar for 10 years; we're probably going to have a more serious conversation about geoengineering around then, and reducing/reflecting incoming solar radiation won't address atmospheric chemistry.
It'll fly under the radar, but in institutional contexts it's already a known thing. After the Biden White House allowed the COVID emergency declaration to lapse, the CDC published an updated set of recommendations for indoor air quality and ventilation, endorsing a baseline target maximum of 800 ppm CO2 for buildings, along with other ventilation improvements. That's one of those things which will take a few years to get integrated into standards, and then every new-build building will have really good ventilation, until they start asking questions like "Outdoor CO2 levels are not low enough to keep my building CO2 below the target value. Do I need to make up the difference by using a CO2 scrubber, or by diluting outdoor air with canned oxygen and nitrogen?"
Despite sort of getting it, the UC Gundams still fall short on the sense of spiritual emptiness that would result from humanity wiping out over half of its own members in less than a year. The Newtype/Oldtype, Earth vs Spacenoid conflict is actually far less interesting than delving into how people would process it.
Destruction on a scale completely unprecedented in human history - not even the Black Death did it so quickly. Many good ways to go here - fanatical religious re-awakening, bitter misanthropy, numbing hedonism. Meanwhile the Newtype 'ideology' is borderline incoherent; leave the earth pristine or else I'll keep dropping WMDs on it(?)
Calling it "the Newtype ideology" really doesn't stand up to canon, but I admit that I've been doing research on this matter while trying to figure out what the fuck Zeonism is.
"Leave the earth pristine or I'll keep dropping WMDs on it" is something that only really happened under Char's Newborn Neo-Zeon in UC 0093; the attempted colony drops and asteroid drops before that year are from attempts to destroy or debilitate the Federation government, not to somehow save Earth's environment. Char went through ~20 years of revenge and hope and disillusionment and reradicalization, and he decided to force emigration.
But you've got to finish ZZ, and watch Char's Counterattack, or read Beltorchika's Children, to get there.
Keeping the Earth pristine and clean, and preserving it as a park for all humanity, was something that was part of Zeon Zum Deikun's personal philosophy. It's really uncommon among the bundle of beliefs that get called "Zeonism" which Deikun's political successors professed. Classic case of Founding Father syndrome, or Founding Text syndrome, where the convenient parts are remembered, and the inconvenient parts are let lie.
Looking over this made me realize something about the UC timeline that I'd previously missed:
One of the strained elements of the UC to me (before just now) was the extremely rapid transition to high-population offworld colonies. In the UC timeline, they took barely 20 years for space stations to go from a rare commodity to the basis of life for 9 billion people- more than 80% of living humans. Space is a lot of fun, don't get me wrong, but it seemed like severe overreach to predict that such a large fraction of the world would emigrate to space, so quickly.
But Gundam was first released in 1979! Overpopulation was still an active fear, and the effects of the Green Revolution hadn't yet been felt. So even if the reasons for the mass emigration to space were mostly left unsaid in the text proper, contemporary viewers would probably have been able to understand in context that the Sides were, originally, lifeboats. Or at least, refugee centers- holding sites for an unwanted surplus population. Thus that strange vibe of the Sides being kind of subaltern and resentful of Earth, even though they're nominally the cool new space future.
Zeonism then ends up with an even stronger and more interesting narrative relationship to historical Japanese fascism; it was powerful and timely in the colonies specifically because it provided a basis for dignity and identity in a population that had lost the bid to stay on Earth, semi-forcibly resettled away from their homelands, culture ripped away in favor of unfamiliar futurism, and pushed to the economic margins of an Earth-centric political system. This is one of the reasons why Zeonism is a patchwork of different consistent-ish philosophical stances, rather than one coherent story. The colonists were the beneficiaries of a technological solution to a material crisis, but that solution also absolutely shredded the narrative through which they understood their own lives; Zeonism was shaped precisely to fill that gap.
Just putting this out there to let people know to watch what they post because you can be found and if you think that the government can't do this ...
Well, you better think again!!
Reminder that in 2017 4chan played capture the flag with Shia LaBeouf. Without any kind of a retail store to use for landmarks they got a rough estimate of the flags location from a livestream. They used the position of the sun to narrow it down to a specific time zone, they tracked the flight paths of planes seen flying overhead to further narrow it down. Then someone in the area drove around honking his horn while viewers on the livestream told him if he was getting closer until he found and stole the flag.
Surprising to hear that barbie move came out and poeple have comments from actually seeing it, I assumed the movie was in some sort of Zeno's paradox situation where it would approach ever-closer but never arrive.
On some level it's still shocking that Death Stranding was ever actually released.
I wanted to draw Scooby doo humanized with hippie vibes, and the whole gang as dogs,, maybe I draw them more(?? 👀✨
Honestly I love this because it implies that Scooby is just a guy with a bunch of dogs that drag him into trouble then somehow solve mysteries and crimes and he's just there like. My dog has a magnifying glass with her. Why. Why does she have that. And Shaggy (which is such a good name for a dog) is the only one close to acting like a regular dog. I also like to imagine that police will congratulate Scooby on solving another mystery and everytime he has to explain that it was actually his dogs that kept giving him clues and trying to put it together until he figured out what they were trying to communicate but no one in law enforcement believes him so everyone thinks he's a genius detective but in reality he just wants to go about his day, hang out with his cousins and chill with some snacks and his dogs (but 3 of his dogs are determined to solve mysteries and 1 comes along looking distressed everyday)
Oh hey look, the idea got EVEN BETTER
This strike is not far enough I say, the actors and writers must seize the city of LA from the government and the movie companies and declare it an independent moviemaking commonwealth.
the amount of posts from tumblr staff members scolding users for not wanting to give them money is truly incredible. every single complaint about the website is met with “well maybe if you gave us enough money 💅” truly undefeatable business strategy. when i got banned from mass reporting and their email support blocked me an actual post i saw from a real staff member on here in response was that we “aren’t giving them enough money” to afford moderation that isn’t completely automated. not to mention this kind of shit from official blogs:
it’s truly fucking astonishing. did they think they just got lucky that Yahoo sold tumblr for $1 billion less than they bought it for? do they think if they yell at us enough we’ll feel like we owe something to an unprofitable business model? if you can’t figure something out that is literally not my problem. sorry interest rates aren’t 0% anymore and you can’t run businesses at a complete loss forever now. sell the platform to the next schmuck dumb enough to buy it or shut it down. we will literally just find somewhere else to post.
It’s working guys you’re making tumblr $30+ million dollars it’s really happening!

we will literally just find somewhere else to post.
Counterpoint: lol no you won't
You're a Tumblr funnyman. You want to post on Bobert Bobbington's Personal Gaming Forum, with 140 members? Hahaha no one fucking believes that.
You want an audience. Your ass is going to Instagram. You'll be miserable, because ain't nobody reading text posts longer than 140 characters on fucking Instagram.

data is admittedly sparse on this one but i have a case study saying not even then
imagining a right-wing guy who adopts the rhetorical posture of social justice discourse but like, completely in good faith with his own set of beliefs. like um actually that movie is reverse racist and extremely problematic. the author of this book is actually extremely heterophobic i can't believe you would support her. and so on.
These people exist and they are mastering forms of racism you have never heard of.
Nazis are unironically reblogging this, apparently unaware of how unhinged it makes them look.
[Old content for new readers:]
I'll explain what they're doing.
The Social Justice movement are descriptive racists, who believe in intergenerationally-transmitted racial essences uniformly possessed by everyone in an assigned 'race,' such as "whiteness."
Rather than biological race realism, it's simply social race realism.
The Social Justice movement are also normative racists, who believe in treating people by their race rather than as individuals.
They treat races as first-class moral entities between which there is a balance of harms to be remediated by explicit inter-group transfers and "corrective" discrimination against group members, rather than a statistical abstraction which is largely just a label for a group of similar-looking individuals.
This goes up to the Biden Administration - courts told them they couldn't make a debt relief program that was flatly race-based, and instead would have to show individual cases of discrimination.
Social Justice support for "race conscious" policy is simply a branch of scientific racism, racial discrimination under the direction of a body of racial experts / racial expertise.
Remember, Ibram Kendi proposed giving full veto power over government policy to a body of presumably-unelected race experts.
If unironic Nazis are reblogging this, it's because they're bragging that they're better at scientific racism.
Language matters. Oppressors beware.
Can a word not be a slur, but used like one in most cases? Can words always be uttered in contempt and not become slurs?
I fail to see how Karen is ever said without contempt.
Contempt doesn't make the slur. Karens in the context of entitled white women are not oprressed by the people they are being Karens toward. Also, I know women whose name literally are Karen, more than one, and their names aren't uttered with contempt. Words used to denigrate, other, and dehumanize a marginalized person are slurs.
The Karen who fairly earns that label for behaving like the most entitled, spoiled, fucking brat, leveraging her status against people she views as below her isn't being marginalized when she's called out for her behaviour. It's not a slur. It's not "used like" a slur.
We had a reasonably useful word for "someone who obnoxiously harasses retail workers" until you lot decided that it was about how "white" women, specifically, are uniquely entitled and evil, and uniquely un-self-reflective. So basically, you took a somewhat useful word and then ruined it by making it racist.
I don't personally need to use the original meaning of the term, so it's not a tremendous loss to me, but it is annoying, and you lot are very unaware of your own tribalism.

you: Computer, generate a Tumblr user.
AI: processing...
[AI] slowflowering: This is my OC, Lil' Napo.
[AI] slowflowering: He's Napoleon, but shorter.
you: Thanks. Increase the gender quotient.
[AI] slowflowering: Lil' Napo is non-binary. He's feeling masculine with his pastel uniform today. I've been working for a week on this piece featuring him with his boyfriend.
you: Great, but I want you to increase the fandom level.
[AI] slowflowering: ...the Onceler.
you: * feeling nostalgic in the year 2063, long after Tumblr has disappeared from the face of the 'net *

Regarding a potential UPS strike; "UPS working conditions are shit" sounds pretty plausible, actually.
Spacedoor: SD-X is about the Spacedoor Web, a collection of high-tech gateways that curiously resemble doors of the make and model that one might find on a Hollywood studio lot (there is also a ruined alien spaceship that resembles a boeing 747). Spacedoors connect to each other when opened but due to billions of years of disrepair their targets are random, and the SD-X must wander alien worlds to find Earth after a janitor accidentally closed the Spacedoor during an away mission.
(spacedoor 2/2) because Earth's spacedoor was unearthed exactly 77 meters below Old Faithful, the Spacedoor Program is managed by the National Park Service.
well, i'll say this, it wouldn't be expensive to produce
Thinking back to that time when somebody asked for relationship advice on our forum. He was a freshman in uni. He thought his new girlfriend had ghosted him, but then she called him on a landline and told him she was being held in a psych ward against her will. She told him her influential parents had pulled strings to have her committed and now she was getting the wrong meds. Multiple adults posted with earnest advice (not legal advice) about power of attorney and how to hire counsel from a psych ward and the rights and options parents have regarding adult children and what to do once she is out to make sure her parents can't commit her again.
I commented "You met recently, she said she loves you, you barely know her, she calls you. Are you sure she isn't actually delusional? Have you talked about her parents before? Have you talked about her mental health? What if the is having an episode now? Are you sure her parents aren't loving and caring and doing the right thing?"
I caught a lot of flak for that comment. Other posters told me I wasn't helping. How dare I say this woman is crazy, she is a victim of the system, she needs help. I was just a pawn of the psychiatric establishment. Well, maybe. But how well does our young man know her, really?
Some time later, the young man sent me a DM. He had met her parents, and he had visited his girlfriend in the psych ward. Turns out she really was having a manic episode. She stopped taking her meds and started drinking. It was messy. It wasn't the first time. Her parents were not that rich and connected. He visited her a couple of times. Then he visited after she was put on mood stabilisers again. She was already in her manic state when they first met. Looking at him sane and sober, maybe they should be seeing other people.
He never posted an update to the advice thread though. I mean, look what those posters said to me. What would they say to him? He'd look like an idiot. Or maybe he'd look like a pawn of the psychiatric establishment.
the successor to the exonerative voice, as presaged in youtube journalism scum filth shit fuck, is the vindicative. how did the bullet get into Derry Grinp's head during the 3am no-knock? "local gets himself shot".
what farming items in mmorpgs has taught me: i used to think using ice trays to make ice cubes was free but after thinking about it i have to pay the electric bill to power the freezer so every moment that i’m not freezing new trays of ice cubes is a moment that i’m underutilizing the freezer and increasing the cost of ice cubes. i have to constantly swap out ice trays for new ice cubes on an hourly rotation on a 24 hour basis or else i won’t produce the maximum amount of ice cubes possible and will underutilize the full potential of my electric bill. i need to stop using all other appliances and utilities in my home to make more ice cubes
