And I would like to spend... [the rest of my existence with you]
David Tennant, the man that you are. Killing millions with that line delivery.
CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE ELECTRIC CANDLES AND THE EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS?
I'm not really getting the Aziraphale hate because even without all the pressures of religious brainwashing etc etc we've literally just seen through his eyes:
- Crowley radiating joy at the sheer wonder of the universe only to be crushed by orders from up high
- Those orders being the ONLY reason Crowley fell. Aziraphale knows (and has always known) that Crowley fell simply because no one wanted to listen to his ideas.
- 6000 of Crowley clearly aching to do good in defiance of his own nature
- Crowley admitting how desperately lonely that defiance is for him
- Crowley being BETTER than Aziraphale at morality and making Aziraphale better as a result
- Evidence that no one is ever going to be chill with Angel/Demon relationships unless they are too powerful to be stopped and/or willing to vanish
- That they are never going to escape the monitoring of heaven/hell (they literally were *stalked* by both sides the entire season) so they can't just live unnoticed among humans
- Even during their last few years of 'freedom' Crowley has still been desperately unhappy. He's at the 'what's the point of it all???' stage BEFORE anything bad happens in S2. For all he talks about the preciousness of their life, Crowley is radiating misery during his freedom whereas Aziraphale actually seems happy.
Like why WOULDN'T Aziraphale see this offer as the perfect solution? Crowley can get what he always wanted - to do good without anyone stopping him, with Aziraphale helping. It can be exactly like the nebula scene forever - only this time Aziraphale can just bask in Crowley's joy.
From his pov he is sacrificing his own life on Earth for THAT.
Oof we are in the last 20% of a very angsty slow burn, kiddos.
presenting, for your viewing torture pleasures: the last scene of season 2 with Love of My Life by Queen playing in the background
End of Ep. 6
That last look Aziraphale gives Crowley.
After the Metatron drops the 'second coming' bombshell. When Aziraphale looks back at Crowley that last time, he's working to conceal the movement.
Maybe you read that as a guarded 'we just had a fight and I don't want you to see how much i care' look.
Or
The look of an angel who just realized the dangerous game he's about to have to play in order to get back to Crowley. A look, trying to repeat what he said with the bullet trick.
"You said trust me."
"And you did."
Both season 1 and 2 continuously emphasize Aziraphale's tendency to realize, nearly a fraction too late, the grey between the black and white.
Aziraphale was just told that the end of the world is still heaven's game plan. A plan he is expected to carry out, which goes against at least one clear line he's been able to draw with Crowley. He has been manipulated by the Metatron into this position that he can not refuse.
When Aziraphale steps into the elevator, the expression of the Metatron is not one of a battle easily won. He can tell Aziraphale's alleagence was a narrow victory. That he is not going to be an easy pawn. That he'll need to keep a close eye on his new supreme archangel.
On the way Up, Aziraphale is planning. Preparing for a role.
Crowley may be unable to see past the rejection right now, but in this moment he's watching Aziraphale. Closely. Through the pain. And he knows Aziraphale. When he's bored, when he wants to brag about being clever, and when something is wrong.
He's just got to trust.
What broke me about episode six of good omens:
- Crowley having to look up and tilt his head so his tears didn’t roll down his cheeks
- the amount of times Crowley’s voice cracks or stutters during their conversation/confession
- the obvious affection but also annoyance in his voice when he calls Aziraphale an idiot
- The way that Crowley acknowledges the fact that if he doesn’t get everything off his chest right now he’ll probably chicken out later
- how hopeful Aziraphale seems when he gets the “good news” from the Metatron because all he’s thinking about is keeping Crowley safe
- the fact that they want to be together so badly but it’s ripping them apart
- the fact that neither of their plans is going to be very affective in the long run
- Aziraphale doesn’t fully understand the atrocities of heaven, he doesn’t know how much pain Crowley went through while falling
- when Aziraphale said, “nothing lasts forever,” what he meant was, “material objects don’t last forever, but we do, and I’ll give up as many books as I need to in order to stay by your side,” but what Crowley heard was, “We aren’t going to last forever,”
- the desperate way in which Crowley kisses Aziraphale, almost begging, asking, pleading Aziraphale to understand everything from the kiss
- Aziraphales wanting so bad to kiss Crowley back but everything is just wrong, it’s not happening the way he wanted it to, his hands struggling to decide weither or not to pull Crowley in or push him away
- the way Crowley says, “don’t bother,” when Aziraphale forgives him, he isn’t sorry for his actions, and he certainly isn’t sorry for being in love with an angel
- the soft way in which Aziraphale touches his lips with his hand, almost preserving the kiss
- and how Aziraphale hesitates after the Metatron asks if he’s ready, he really doesn’t want to go without Crowley, but he doesn’t want to stay without Crowley either, so he ends up leaving, forcing a smile on the way out
You go to your friend’s house and Jeff Bezos is there. You’re like “are you insane? That’s Jeff Bezos, he’s evil, we need to throw him out” and your friend tries to convince you that no poor Jeff Bezos has amnesia and is in a lot of trouble so you have to help him. This is insane to you but you’re in love with your friend so you’re like okay…and then Jeff Bezos regains his memories and runs off to live out his queer love story. You’re like “well that was INSANE wasn’t it? Let’s go do boozy brunch to get over it and also I might be in love with you”…..but your friend/love of your life is like “this is awkward but I’m actually the new CEO of Amazon”…….that would be terrible wouldn’t it? Well something really similar happened to my good friend crowley
it's the fact that Aziraphale still thinks Crowley's demon status is something that needs "fixing" 🥲 but it's also about Crowley not understanding that his "holiness" is an inherent part of Aziraphale and not something he'd give up voluntarily, it's about personal identities being lost in relationships, its about the romatinisation of "us", it's about Nina not understanding why Maggie sells records when you can stream it, it's about the inherent struggle between keeping you "you" while still finding space for "us"
