Thank you Gilbert Baker (even though I don't know who you are)
Gilbert Baker created the original rainbow flag in 1977/1978. He was an artist, activist and drag queen performing under the name Busty Ross as an allusion to his creation of the flag. We lost him in 2017.
The flag originally had 8 stripes, like below:
The stripes to represent sex and magic were removed due fabric shortages so you more often see the 6 stripe version. He added the 9th lavender stripe to represent diversity and that is the version of the flag I included above.
