reblog and describe your favorite tolkien character in the tags
There are so many great characters in Kinou Nani Tabeta but my favorite is Shiro and Kenji’s grocery store guardian angel. Even though she first got to know Shiro when he was being a poor sport about milk prices (he’d already bought discount milk elsewhere only to find his usual store had an even better deal)…
…she’s still there to help when he’s in danger of having to overpay for chicken…
saving the day with her price gun.
And she’ll always let you know when not to stock up on onions because you could get a better deal soon.
Big thanks to @kinounaniresource for their stellar work on the subtitles for this show.
the real life version of being doomed by the narrative is knowing you have work in the morning

In my own fiction, I don’t think in terms of redemption arcs. There are no redemption arcs in hell. I like to think about moments of grace, and I think of them as these shocking moments of piercing clarity where a character’s situation and circumstance become clear to them and they are able to hold that self-knowledge without recrimination or judgement from themselves or the reader. A brief, glancing moment of wholeness, where they comprehend all they are and have been and will be. Sometimes, it’s just a glimpse, sometimes it’s more than a glimpse, but every character, I try to afford some small shard of grace. Where all judgment is suspended and they float just a little bit. My grandpa used to say, even sinners in hell get thirsty. And I think that thirst is a lot like grace. That no matter how accustomed you are to your circumstances, no matter how inured to it you are, there is a part of you, some human, gentle part, that is capable of feeling. And I think of my moments of grace as letting that human, gentle part of my characters for just a brief instant become the dominant aspect of their nature.
Moments of grace to me are more crucial than redemption arcs because a redemption arc requires a character to move from one phase of being to another. From a moral debt to moral solvency. Repaying something owed. But a moment of grace is just a bolt of clarity where judgement is suspended and they are how they are and that is okay. A moment when you stand by your character and accept them and they accept themselves. It’s not always positive. Sometimes, it’s brutal. Sometimes it’s painful. But I do think it is always beautiful, when a character is just seen and when then they see themselves.
the metaphor of the nuclear family suggests that the most stable families have 56 members and are formed under the most violent circumstances in the universe
Sunshine Essay
Sunshine is a science fiction film directed by Danny Boyle that was released in 2007. It has an all-star cast with Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne, Benedict Wong, Cliff Curt, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Chris Evans. I’ve spent the past four months watching Danny Boyle movies and I was excited to see this one. What I learned from watching Danny Boyle's films is that he is an incredible stylist and Sunshine is a beautiful movie. While the sets are contained and the film can be claustrophobic, the film makes great use of color and uses color very well to convey temperature. Using primarily blues, grays, and other cool muted colors
the appearance of the sun really strikes an audience with characters basking in the glow of the sun.
The shots of the character Sunshine is also a film of light and dark. According to Andrew Carroll, “Characters are often lit in blue or orange. Thematically this is appropriate for a film that shows people losing and regaining their humanity.”
Sunshine is a visual spectacle with great use of special and practical effects including the depiction of the sun with its solar flares and sunspots. It is one of the most beautiful images I have ever seen.
Additionally, the way the film depicts Pinbacker (portrayed by Mark Strong) is incredibly innovative. Pinback is never really seen by the audience. Carrol describes this as mimicking the effects of staring at the sun. It’s as if even the camera can’t look at him. Luiz H.C. writes that “that reality itself is being distorted around Mark Strong’s demented character.”
While some folks criticize this film for morphing from a heady sci-fi film to a slasher in space, the way the third act is filmed to rack up tension and convey distortion is incredibly impressive and speaks to the cinematic acumen of Boyle and the cinematographer for this film Alwin H. Küchler
Sunshine contains many themes. Carroll argues that film is about relationships, writing that is about “relationships with each other and how they can be built, destroyed, and rebuilt.” He also writes that is about “our relationship with our star, how it gives us life and how it will one day destroy us.” Indeed, the theme of Sunshine that resonates with me the most is that it is clearly interested in the sun as humanity’s giver of life and soon to be our ultimate annihilation. The imagery Boyle uses to convey this reaches for the religious and mythic.
He depicts the sun as an all-encompassing, unimaginable, unfathomable power.
In fact, one could argue that Pinbacker is a personification of that element of the sun as ends up as a monster of great power, size, and nuclear capabilities. Indeed, one could argue it makes the controversial ending earned because the “final boss” if you will is a creation of that power.
I have not done a ranking of Danny Boyle’s work, but I think Sunshine would be at the top of my list. I love the international cast, the performances (primarily Chris Evans and Cillian Murphy), the astounding visuals stemming from the cinematography and special effects, and the big questions the film ponders. The ending itself is a thing of beauty we hear Cillian Murphy’s final message to his sister while the sun shines once more.

If your “green” project relies on the same practices of land theft, resource extraction, and labor abuse that brought us to this point - then the grifters supporting it are just another variety of climate change deniers. Squat the trees while we still got trees. Defend what you love.
[ID: A political parody of the “We can do it” poster. It features a person in the classic pose but with a black balaclava covering their face, and saying “We can undo it”.
There are various tools used in environmentalism such as tree spikes, gasoline cans, and climbing equipment, as well as a burning car.
There are various texts over the poster reading:
“We cannot combat climate change without combatting the tyrannical systems facilitating it”
“Ecomodernism is a blueprint for failure”
“New greentech -> the same settler colonialism”
“The deathmarch of industry cannot be diverted with more industry”
