If I have one big complaint about Picard season 3... it's the bloody lighting!

Titan A is a beautiful ship with a beautiful bridge that I would like to see and it took Dave Blass's For Your Consideration for me to see the beauty of this bridge!

Look at this beauty!

But also, apparently, the room we saw of Seven's was only Seven's sitting room.

Seven's sleeping chambers are the doors to her left. I'm wondering if that's where her regeneration unit is, possibly engineered to be mobile and no longer the big alcoves.

It makes sense that apart from the Voyager model on her shelf, Seven's quarters are sparse, and the furniture is all standard issue.

I don't know if Seven ever caught on to the concept of personalizing a space. For the formative years of her life, Seven's never really had a private place of her own.

As far as we know La Sirena might be the closest to having a personal living space.

Also, look, again, LIGHTS.

After I watch Disco s4, I wonder if I can go back and watch The Expanse?

I really want to watch it but I have such visceral dislike for Holden that anytime he’s on a scene I feel the urge to hate on him. Like that’s a me thing, I own that but it really marred my enjoyment of the show.

Anytime he’s around I wonder why he has to be around.

It’s just a thing, but I hope its a thing I can get over because by all accounts and what I’ve seen before, Expanse is really good and I do love Space shows.

people discussing fiction are always like “codependent relationships are unhealthy, we need to talk about how dangerous they are, they’re toxic” why? are you in the relationship too? are you these characters’ therapist? personally I just wanna watch these two fake people be fucked up in each other’s direction

Star Trek Voyager 7x13 - Repentance

The show doesn't usually touch on the things Seven has done and made to do as a Borg drone. And Seven also almost never talked about how painful it is to become a drone and have implants installed in her body.

As we've seen from previous scans, Seven's occipital implant required removing half of her skull. Seven was probably still a child at that point when the procedure was done, a teen at most.

I like that the episode started with Seven not being sympathetic to Iko, who started as an unrepentant killer but by some hand wave sci-fi nanoprobe, Iko began to feel the weight of his crime. By the end Iko and Seven bonded together. This is a part of Seven hasn't shared with anyone apart from Captain Janeway but also it's not something Seven liked talking about.

The only other time Seven talked about this was when Neelix asked in Memorial and she was a little brusque in her response because she really didn't like to talk about the horrible things she's done for the Borg.

Seven has come a long way from the time B'Elanna asked her if she felt terrible for what she's done to easily diagnosing guilt in another person because she lives with guilt every day. Guilt and remorse are old friends to Seven.

It must be Covid production thing but there’s something in how season 4 Discovery is being filmed that makes me not engage with it emotionally.

on paper i should love this season but i feel disconnected to it and then I leapt back to season 1 and I was blasted by the high contrast, the color blacks that are a deep black without the blue tint that seems to be in almost all scenes.

it has to be the covid production that is causing this dissonance with me, covid was hell on all tv and movie productions so i don’t blame them. its just for me, the color grading and some direction and camera choices that’s caused the disconnect.

i’ll continue watching, things might settle down later.

(i’ve always had a bad reaction to blue color grading and i don’t know why.)

we joke about voyager’s found family being more like forced family and it’s true but i do think a part of what makes the relationships between the characters so interesting is that so many of them wouldn’t be friends under regular circumstances. like, harry with tom + b’elanna obviously their friendship is wonderful but back in the federation they’re very much people who are defined by their roles in society and those roles are fundamentally incompatible with each other. starfleet officer + an ex-con failson and a member of the maquis. same with tuvok and chakotay, who get off to a rocky start for that exact reason but are forced to work together and develop a certain level of mutual respect and (imo) admiration. and janeway + chakotay obviously, who complement each other so well but, like with harry and tom + b’elanna, never would’ve discovered that without voyager.

like, the entire premise of voyager is about who people are when removed from the framework of society and the roles by which they define themselves. which is reflected in the characters personal struggles (harry and janeway’s struggle to be “good” starfleet officers, b’elanna’s relationship to her mixed heritage and seven’s relationship to being ex-borg), as well. so for me at least that’s why the relationships that wouldn’t necessarily exist if they were back in the federation are the most interesting, because they’re a point you can use to examine those broader themes.

I read Star Trek Picard: Stargrazer comics and I'm actually pleasantly surprised that it answered my question about the diplomatic duties in the new Enterprise G command team.

Raffi can handle it but as Captain, Seven would need it too.

It turns out that for Seven's Kobayashi Maru's officer training, her KM is not action-oriented but diplomatic incidents.

This falls in line with Picard saying in s2:

Seven initially failed the diplomatic test and Seven still doesn't like failing. (Also it's weird to me she's got the gold color when I still feel like she should be blue, but okay).

This prompts Seven and Picard to discuss about this new Kobayashi Maru and why Seven is taking this.

This time it's Seven who walks away, anyway tldr, Picard, and Seven end up on the same mission. Seven comes in guns blazing things get out of hand and Picard is abducted by the local war leader.

The conflict ends when Seven talks to the war leader and empathizes with her about their shared experience and talks the war leader down.

As things wind down Picard tries to talk Seven into giving Starfleet another chance. Now that they're ready for her, Starfleet is the one chasing her.

But also I love Picard's reason for Seven joining Starfleet and makes sense for Seven's character at this point.

Picard: Don't be mistaken, Seven. I am quite aware that you don't need Starfleet. It's Starfleet that needs you.

And honestly, this is true. Because at this point Starfleet is so broken, it's been broken since after the Dominion war and the Romulan Prime exploding.

This gives Seven pause but Picard doesn't push it.

Janeway however....

Now that Starfleet is more amendable to accepting Seven of Nine, Janeway is not going to let this moment pass her by. She's been trying to get Seven into Starfleet for 20 years.

And as we see in season 3, Janeway and Picard successfully tag team Seven into accepting.

But also, I'm fascinated that Seven did go through accelerated Officer training. And I'm also glad that she's got diplomatic training under Picard and Janeway. And Raffi is also there too, politicking and relationship work is a huge part of intelligence work.

@dealanexmachina: Makes sense that Seven would have the gold color for engineering. Blue would mean science/medical, and not every ship has an astrometrics lab like Voyager did. (Also explains why Shaw would want her on the ship since he is also a grease monkey)

I neeed Seven to build and Astrometrics lab in Enterprise-G. That makes sense then that Seven is wearing the gold, but also I bet in Seven's meticulous records Janeway made it highly mentions her engineering prowess.

USS Titan-A is an Engineer's ship.

Titan-A is the most efficiently maintained ship in Starfleet.

Seven's efficiency reports are (in)famous. The Voyager crew got used to it.

Enterprise G is gonna be so well run.

The kiss is great, but Lee and Kara’s “yeah, we’re just gonna pretend we didn’t see that” moment is *chef’s kiss*

Every reaction here is absolute gold. Gaius isn’t sure what he’s looking at, Tigh doesn’t want to look but he’s looking, Athena’s processing, and then Kara and Lee totally turning around.

There were threads a few weeks ago about how Ted Lasso used romcom tropes and then didn't go through with it and the number of people saying they didn't see it is...

And yet they had a whole scene where Ted is in the airport about to board his flight and Rebecca was THERE.

Like, c'mon. That is such a Romance Trope, it's a trope for a reason because it's a shorthand telling the audience what this scene should read.

But no, Ted Lasso writers thought it was 'subverting expectations' for them to use romcom tropes for a relationship they want to retain as platonic.

This is why there are people now who can't read a relationship that's been deliberately written as romantic because there's so much crossing the streams. There are already people who have a problem reading romance in a scene between two men or women when it's deliberately written that way, deliberately blurring the line between Happy Ever After romcom tropes with friendship tropes isn't cool and edgy.

It's misleading.

Also, this is a mark of how much romcoms have fallen out of favor because there are now a lot of people who aren't familiar with the romcom shorthand.

There are tropes for a reason, it's the language of the genre.

"Oh, they're just friends and they never had any romantic tension between them."

Fuck you. I have eyes, I know the tropes you're all playing it. It's not clever that you're 'subverting' it.

God I'm so tired of people acting like not wanting to attract a lot of (often negative) attention is somehow Capitulating To Bigots like. The other day I was talking to someone about my strategic deployment of pronouns based on how much of an issue I think a person is likely to make about it and they were like "oh I just do what I want I'm done catering to cis people" and I was like BUDDY. I LIVE IN THE RURAL SOUTH WANTING TO NOT HAVE TO CONSTANTLY GET INTO IT WITH PEOPLE ABOUT MY PERSONAL GENDER IDENTITY IS NOT CATERING TO CIS PEOPLE I HAVE A RIGHT TO WANT TO MOVE THROUGH THE WORLD WITHOUT CONSTANT INTERPERSONAL CONFLICT

Or like I was talking about how I hate swimwear options bc they're all revealing but if you choose to wear like, a t shirt and shorts, people still stare at you because that's socially unusual so it sucks either way and someone was like "I just do it anyway and if people don't like it they can die mad about it" and like... okay. I want to be able to go to the local pool and not either be uncomfortable with what I'm wearing or have people treat me weird about it. I would like for my presence and clothing choices to be considered neutral and it's fine for me to state that actually. This is not assimilationist or capitulating to people. It's going "hm I would love if stepping out my front door didn't have to be a revolutionary act!!!!!" Agghhhhh

Worst possible universe and bad representation etc but can you imagine. B'Elanna divorced and with only partial custody of her daughter, meeting Seven after years of no contact, and after Icheb died because Seven talked too much to a horrible woman that we interpret to be her ex. Having both failed utterly as caretakers, just like their parents had failed them. Would the self-loathing and despair be recognizable to each other then, or would they still misunderstand one another like they did back on Voyager?

(For the record I maintain neither situations were or would be entirely their fault—Seven was manipulated and deceived, and B'Elanna has every right to escape an unhappy marriage if it turns out to be one. But the guilt would be inevitable regardless, for very obvious reasons.)

The reason why social media has gotten so much worse recently (reddits recent fuck-up, everything on Twitter since Musk, FB being FB, Tumblrs various attempts at expanding profitability recently) is because it is no longer possible to exist as a company by fencing in large parts of our social life and having investment money pump in on the basis of expected future value of that amount of information when it suddenly costs money to loan money due to suddenly high interest rates after the inflationary crisis of the last year, which has made the current model of the Internet that has existed for the last about 10 years completely unsustainable. All of them need to become profitable or die, and they are learning very quickly that that just isn't possible no matter how much of the life and information of the users one steals. We are witnessing the death-throes of Web2.0, and what comes after is as yet unclear.

Some people in the reblogs seems to have bought the idiotic idea that the future of the internet is some sort of crypto blockchain integration applying free market principles to everything we do online. Luckily, crypto is also dependent on free credit, and their vision for the future of the internet will die just as hard as Reddit. I'm actually fairly optimistic about the death of Web2.0, which I think is one of the worse forms the internet could take.

We should get a brief spate of actual variety before settling into a new Horrible Pattern and I'm looking forward to it. I also maintain some hope (although not very much) that what we end up with might be a bit more like our old, useful internet.

I love watching the scene where Raffi dresses up Rios and Picard, because all the while Seven is just in the background having serious flashbacks to all the weird shenanigans the Voyager crew got up to in the Holodeck.

"You need a feather in your hat."

This suggestion is straight out of Tom Paris's Captain Proton Guidebook to Costumes.

Seven grew up on this ridiculous crap.

Like This

And this:

Seven knows ALLLLL about ridiculous over-the-top panache.

God, now I want Tom Paris and Raffi to meet because I feel like they'd have a ball with each other.

Especially when Seven reveals Tom Paris taught her how to drive, considering the 2024 LA trip.
