The ‘Kiss-gate’ likes:

On 4th December 2014, Taylor and Karlie attended The 1975’s concert at Terminal 5 in New York (accompanied by Lily Aldridge, Martha Hunt, the Haim sisters and, for a short while, Josh Kushner.) This evening, which plausibly was intended to establish a public frame of reference for Taylor’s subsequent relationship with Matt Healy — the groundwork for which was being laid throughout November (see: here , here and here) —  became notorious, when video was posted online purporting to show (an obviously inebriated) Taylor kissing Karlie.  

Over the course of the same evening a total of 146 posts were liked by Taylor’s tumblr account. Notably, 26 of these concerned her relationship with Karlie, of which 13 were photos and/or gifs of their appearance together at VSFS on 2nd December. They are as follows below:

Maroon: A Queer Reading

Maroon is a song about the unbearable end of a relationship. The emotional lyrics combined with the visceral production makes the song feel like what a devastating breakup feels like, the aftermath of a relationship you hoped would never end, the kind of heartbreak time could never mend. The morning came, the silence came, the end came. The sadness is so intense it twists into rage.  I chose you. I lost you. You left me. 

The first verse describes a relationship that takes you off-guard. You get so caught up in each other, you don’t notice that you’ve been up all night, you don’t notice that the incense has burned up. But to everyone else, outside of this incense-filled, vinyl-playing apartment, you look like the closest of friends. People say that you’re roommates, so now you make jokes about it. You spend your nights awake because your relationship isn’t fit for daylight.

Despite the fears surrounding your relationship, you chose this person. New York, the city of your coming of age, screams your lover’s name. While everything in your life burns down, you dance. You dance, because your lover is here. You would choose love over the fear of what the world thinks every time. But you feel it ending, catastrophic and bloody.

This is the kind of love that marks you like a bloodstain. It was so intense, you can’t wash your clothes anymore. Your former lover is still all over you like a wine-stained dress. But you can’t wear it anymore. You can’t wear anything that reminds you of her. It comes back to you in screaming color. You thought love would be burning red, and you were right. 

The love you hoped would never end ends the way things always do for you. Sobbing. Empty. The things you swore would never get in the way of your relationship keep you from seeing what made all of this worth it. The haze is no longer the protection around your relationship. It’s the very thing keeping you from seeing each other.

What people saw on the outside, what you once saw yourself, was roses. Traditional love, marriage between a man and a woman. But you and your lover weren’t roses afterall. You were carnations, a symbol of queerness, another flower on the list. In the years following the end, you still feel her. She was everything, and eventually, even you had to give up.

This time, when you look at the sky, you see the devastation. The rose blush has faded into rust. She stops answering your calls. You stop trying. She put this into you, and now she’s gone. Midnight was once the space you shared. Now, when you watch as time moves on without you. You’ll never move on. How can you, when nobody sees what you’ve gone through?

Eventually, you become so painfully numb. All you can do is remember. All you can do is hope she remembers it too. You go over it in your mind again and again, hoping the wine and the blood will fade enough for you to breathe. It never seems to end.

When Taylor faced Kaylor’s LED and sang love story, all I can do is screaming Guys, you need to come back!

I just love how perfectly they handled this arc. 

I’m sick of shows using characters prying through each other’s personal stuff as a plot device and rarely addressing it. They completely dismiss the fact that it’s a breach of trust and invasion of privacy in doing so. But of course “iT’S jUSt A ShOW”.

I just love how this show crafted this arc to clearly emphasise the importance of respecting each other’s boundaries in a relationship (YES THAT NEEDS TO BE IN BOLD).

Amity could’ve easily sneaked a peek at the video to find answers. She could’ve easily done it. Luz’s phone was right in her hands. And the sad thing is that if she did do it, most of us would’ve overlooked it because we’re so used to that plot device being constantly used in general.

But what they showed us is that Amity had a choice. She could pry and then talk to Luz about it. Or she could just talk to Luz about it anyways without prying. Honestly, whatever you do the end result is the same: you end up talking to the other person about it. But the difference in both paths is that you’re breaching someone else’s trust in one.

Amity didn’t pry. She reassured her that too. Amity chose to respect Luz’s boundaries and privacy here. And she approached Luz gently about it at the right time and moment. She didn’t even push Luz into even giving her side of the story. She only worded her concerns. 

The kind of representation of relationships that involves healthy communication and acknowledgement of boundaries is exactly what the world needs more of. Media representation is so important in the way it can influence the morals that the viewers are passively being injected with. Especially in a show where the target demographic is children and has to focus around morals.

Seriously, bless this show for it’s wholesome and healthy rep! Bless it! The world needs more of that.

I was looking around and found this super high quality 4k photo of the rep photo (alternative link) we reference for the eye theory, as wonderfully discovered by @9w1ft.

And on the same website I found some high-quality photos of Karlie. I think the tear-ducts are pretty telling! The right eye in question has a tear-duct that appears to be much more pointed downward / tight like Karlie’s is.

(+ what always does it for me is the peculiar line above the eye and the brow bone structure, but that’s for another day)
