Patron: I have noticed that a number of toys are missing from the children's department recently.
Me: Indeed.
Patron: (lists the toys that have disappeared)
Me: Yup.
Patron: What happened?
Me: Well, you see. Libraries have patrons.
Patron: Yes...
Me: And this is a children's department. So we have patrons of a variety of sizes.
Patron: Sure?
Me: And sometimes they shove stuff into their strollers and then we don't have those toys anymore.
Patron: Ah.
Me: We're searching to see if the toys are hiding somewhere odd, but they may be hiding in someone's toy box right now.
PSA from a children's librarian: if your kids swipe a toy from the library, we will not write you up for theft. Please just drop the toy at the checkout desk or in the return bin with a note "found with my kid's library books" or just "Youth Services Department." We'll figure it out. You don't even have to sign it.
