sam/lauren, white and jewish, she/her, fandom old ko-fi.com/intosnarkness

I’ve gotten like 25 new followers this week and the last “about me” I wrote was 6 years ago, so heres a rundown;

Name: Lauren, but I answer to Sam or Snarkness

Age: late 30s

Location: Baltimore metro area.

Send Money: ko-fi.com/intosnarkness Please don't feel like this is something you "need" to do. But if you want to, you sure can.

Housemate: tagged as “cancerkidroommate” “ckr”, “casa del Hawkeyes” (yes this is incorrect and I don’t care), he is my best friend and has been dealing with cancer for almost 10 years now.

Family: if you’re not into kids, I tag the nibblings as “bleep and Blorp and trip” or “auntshit”

You know me from:

Cats:

Hercules and Peri

Asks are open, chats make me anxious but if you send one I’ll probably read it.

Trans women are women. Trans men are men. NB people are NB. TERFs, radfems, and gender critical folks fuck directly off please.

every day I get on here and see some post going "do not make an account on ZYLPPHONE, the hot new social media! it turns out making an account gives the creators (who are nazis) instant access to your bank account and also causes your pets to explode!" and this is all very baffling to me because I cannot believe anyone is actually fucking around with new social media platforms that shit sounds exhausting. if tumblr ever gives up and goes all the way under I will simply turn into a crab and go back to the sea you will not be finding my on zylophone

My cashier at Target yesterday was clearly D(d)eaf or hoh (I saw him sign to another customer and he had a hearing aid of some sort) and so when he was done checking me out I signed “thank you” as I said it and he looked shocked, signed it back and then signed “I love you” and it was such an amazing moment of connection that made me just so fucking happy.

if you reblog this i am kissing you on the mouth. no that is not negotiable. we are in love now. we are dating. we are planning the wedding. i will be with you on your wedding night

Lost followers after reblogging that whole thing about JKR being radicalized over the years, and that disturbs me.

Like if you think saying that people can be radicalized and manipulated into hate is somehow justifying it, yikes. And if you think that people are somehow just good or evil and that you are not at risk of buying into propaganda, have I got some very red flag news about that!

Idk if its because I am an older Millennial maybe (most who unfollowed were younger) but I watched a ton of that generation slide from one of the most progressive to the far right before my every eyes. Hell, my dad fought alongside his black friends in the Detroit race riots and now he watches Fox News 24/7 and talks about the border wall. Yet still claims he could never be racist because of how he used to be. He doesn’t even realize what he has become.

JKR isn’t a deluded old woman or innately evil, but in fact THE prime example of how well-meaning ignorance and privilege can be weaponized and encouraged down a pipeline, until it turns into a force of hate, and should be a cautionary tale about why educating and being open about these issues are necessary. Because there are those out there who will use those divisions and ignorance to their own ends. And just digging in our heels and saying “that could never be me!” is the very thing that puts you more at risk. I’ve lost so many loved ones down that pipeline and it is more slippery than most realize.

Stay alert, stay compassionate, stay humble, and make sure you move through life guided by reason rather than reaction. I love y’all and don’t want to see your passion twisted to get used against the world.

Thinking "I could never be a bigot" is the first prerequisite for becoming a bigot.

In the UK we've seen a few people ride this crazy train to the end of the line in the last few years. Perhaps because our political landscape is different from that of the US, it's easier to see it happening. There has never been an expectation here that being a conservative means you will hold insane views. It might mean you have some objectionable political ideologies, but you are still expected to be a somewhat normal human being who occupies the same planet as the rest of us.

So when we see somebody make the transition from being just a bit right-wing in their thinking, to being a full-on conspiracy lunatic, it really shows. We've seen it with a lot of our politicians and other public figures.

There's a guy called Neil Oliver who used to present historical TV. His views were always a bit weird and biased (historians and archaeologists did not like him at all), but he wasn't an actual crazy person. But he rode that crazy train to the end of the line and became a fully-fledged antivaxx COVID denier, who is now babbling about one world government and peddling antisemitic conspiracy theories. It happens.

JK Rowling's radicalisation has really disturbed people, because she was famous for books which championed ideas of equality and rights for marginalised groups. In retrospect, those books had some biases and prejudices in them as well, but they were ones that most white Britons carry without realising it. So the seemingly sudden change from that to being someone spreading hatred of trans people and seeming to consciously back antisemitic ideas was a massive whiplash. A real shock. Even more of a shock than the fact she seems to have forgotten how to write a readable book.

Now, I'm a pro-independence Scot who was active on Twitter in the years after 2014. So I already knew she was disingenuous, a bit of a troll, and had some fairly reactionary views. Perhaps her further radicalisation was less of a shock for me. But it still took me aback.

This happens. It happens to people who are too secure in their own self-concept as a Good And Progressive Person. They feel that because they are a Good And Progressive Person, all their thoughts and feelings and biases must also be Good And Progressive, because Good People don't have Bad Thoughts, and of course, Bad People never have Good Thoughts.

By painting JK Rowling as having always been a secretly Bad Person, and Harry Potter as having always been secretly propaganda for Bad Thoughts, we make ourselves vulnerable to the same kind of radicalisation. The truth is that she is just a person, a white cis woman with some unexamined biases, who wrote a series of books that were good-hearted and had good messages, and also reflected some of those biases. And now she has taken a ride on the crazy train, and it's scary to see.

Because it could happen to any of us.

i know we're all sick of self-care being a marketing tactic now, but i don't think a lot of us have any other concept of self-care beyond what companies have tried to sell us, so i thought i'd share my favorite self-care hand out

brought to you by how mad i just got at a Target ad

OP this is EXCELLENT

Now THAT’S a self care resource! If you’ve gotten distracted by capitalism’s appropriation of “self-care” and watering the meaning down to nothing this is a super helpful guide to cut through the bullshit.

Tesla has made Autopilot a standard feature in its cars, and more recently, rolled out a more ambitious “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) systems to hundreds of thousands of its vehicles. Now we learn from an analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data conducted by The Washington Post that those systems, particularly FSD, are associated with dramatically more crashes than previously thought. Thanks to a 2021 regulation, automakers must disclose data about crashes involving self-driving or driver assistance technology. Since that time, Tesla has racked up at least 736 such crashes, causing 17 fatalities. This technology never should have been allowed on the road, and regulators should be taking a much harder look at driver assistance features in general, requiring manufacturers to prove that they actually improve safety, rather than trusting the word of a duplicitous oligarch. The primary defense of FSD is the tech utopian assumption that whatever its problems, it cannot possibly be worse than human drivers. Tesla has claimed that the FSD crash rate is one-fifth that of human drivers, and Musk has argued that it’s therefore morally obligatory to use it: “At the point of which you believe that adding autonomy reduces injury and death, I think you have a moral obligation to deploy it even though you’re going to get sued and blamed by a lot of people.” Yet if Musk’s own data about the usage of FSD are at all accurate, this cannot possibly be true. Back in April, he claimed that there have been 150 million miles driven with FSD on an investor call, a reasonable figure given that would be just 375 miles for each of the 400,000 cars with the technology. Assuming that all these crashes involved FSD—a plausible guess given that FSD has been dramatically expanded over the last year, and two-thirds of the crashes in the data have happened during that time—that implies a fatal accident rate of 11.3 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. The overall fatal accident rate for auto travel, according to NHTSA, was 1.35 deaths per 100 million miles traveled in 2022. In other words, Tesla’s FSD system is likely on the order of ten times more dangerous at driving than humans.

The problem that they wont admit is that you can't have FSD on open roads. The technology for safe FSD is actually completely ready-to-go.... on closed roads. For FSD to work, every car on the road has to have FSD, and they have to be talking to each other. And there has to be nothing on the road (excepting maybe *enforced* crosswalks) that isn't either stationary, following a strict, fixed pattern, or under the control of the system that's controlling the cars.

^ trains. This describes trains. Literally just. Just make more trains oh my god I'm screaming it from the rooftop please give me a train

Just putting this here cause you should all watch it. A great reminder of how the little fandoms we engage with can harm the vulnerable people we should be protecting.

I was gonna say “what you think he had insurance???” but 1) at least in the early aughts to mid-teens, NY was one of the less excruciating states to get medicaid in, and 2) he was a minor and it’s a LOT easier to get medicaid for a minor, especially when said minor’s legal guardians are retirees on fixed incomes I’d wager.

So yeah they’re all just fuckin dumbasses! I love them.

This is why I think it would be peak comedy for the radioactive spider to be of a non-venomous species and for there to be a scene of a new Peter Parker/Spiderperson looking up the spider’s features or posting a photo to an identification subbredit before being informed of the fact that nothing will happen

entemologist reddit: oh yeah, that one’s venom isn’t strong enough to cause anything other than a bit of localized pain at the bite site, no worries.

Peter Parker the next morning, stuck to his ceiling: Well someone fucking LIED!!!!

I knew a guy when I was younger who lived in Arizona at one point and told me a story where he was a kid and not supposed to go somewhere but he did and he got bitten by an animal. In my memory it was a bat, but it might have been something else.

He didn’t want to get in trouble, so he didn’t tell anyone and spent the rest of the day just… waiting to die of rabies.

The next day or so he got in a fight with one of his brothers and they told on him and his parents took him to the doctor, so he did not die.

I’m just saying, these guys exist, and they’re exactly who you think they are.

I like that my roommate grew up across the country cause we both have slight regional accents and we get to compare words that the other one says different.

I do not like that my roommate grew up in a place that says my name objectively the wrong way, but I have that problem with a lot of people.

I went to see Parasite completely blind besides being aware (unavoidably) that there was a hard tonal shift at some point. I saw the poster and stuff, but that was it

the entire time I was bracing myself for it to shift into some sort of alien parasite psychological horror movie, which seems really presumptuous, except I saw Bong Joon-ho's The Host and that movie actually did have a giant monster in it, so I wasn't putting it past him

Avatar

god the class dynamics in this movie are so stressful already... keeping up this double life while still taking care of your family...... and if that's not bad enough, they're gonna have to deal with The Parasite when it shows up

Until yesterday I would have sworn that the lyric in Fast Car was "city lights spread out before us and your arms and legs wrapped around my shoulder".

Turns out it's "your arm felt nice around my shoulder" and I was very confused about both anatomy and how driving works.

Feeling good today because my T1 buddy asked me for help dealing with her insurance, which is denying her omnipod because they want her to use a generic (which doesn’t do basal insulin and is a problem for her) and I was like “uh, I have never dealt with that but JDRF’s website says they can help with insurance, do they have a good rep on the T1 community?”

Well, she had a call with JDRF today where they gave her the exact wording her doctor needs to use, told her what reports from the equipment to include, and promised that if it doesn’t work they’ll get the manufacturer involved as well as send letters on her behalf to move things along.

And she was so angry and upset last week that her insurance was being a butt and she was so excited and happy today that someone is going to help her and I feel really happy that I got to be a part of that.

Gee, Tumblr would probably really hate it if you shared and spread this damning article … To the surprise of absolutely none of Tumblr’s LGBTQ users, it turns out the independent NYC human rights agency Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) found that Tumblr’s ham-fisted adult content ban in December 2018 disproportionately targeted LGBTQ users. The CCHR’s investigation revealed Tumbler’s moderation algorithms is demonstrably biased against queer content. As part of the settlement, Tumblr was obligated to review their prejudicial anti-gay moderation policies. Even more mortifyingly, they’ve also had to hire an expert on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) issues and provide unconscious bias training to their moderators. I frankly doubt Tumblr has learned a thing from this humbling experience. Just recently the Tumblr algorithm flagged three ancient posts of mine as violating their terms. All three “offenders” were vintage homoerotic beefcake images (softcore by modern standards) roughly 50 – 65-years-old by Bruce of Los Angeles, Bob Mizer and Tom of Finland. (These are of course pioneering queer artists who routinely faced censorship and imprisonment in the fifties and sixties. Plus ca change!). They've been visible on my page - corrupting viewers -  for years at this point. I appealed all three immediately. Only the Tom of Finland one was approved. The other two are now hidden. So, they haven't learned much. Apparently, Tumblr – who loves to declare how hip, youthful, inclusive and progressive their values are - wants to restore trust with their queer users. I’d recommend we remember their hypocrisy when Pride rolls around and Tumblr splashes rainbow flags everywhere and attempts to pink wash their image.

In honour of Pride Month, this is worth a reblog! Don’t buy into Tumblr’s hypocritical “pink washing.”

I think this article should be shared. But don't overlook this part:

The deal appears to have happened largely because of WordPress.com owner Automattic, which acquired Tumblr from Verizon in 2019 and apparently cooperated closely with the CCHR. “I think that was a turning point in the investigation,” says CCHR attorney Alberto Rodriguez. Automattic had revised the original system to add more human oversight even before the settlement. Under its ownership, Tumblr has also attempted to reconcile with LGBTQ users that departed as part of a larger community exodus.

Automattic bought tumblr, and immediately started to try to undo the mistakes of the past but are blocked by a sex-negative and LGBT-hating world.

I love people who use any pronoun. Like gender is a buffet and they’re just shoving identities into their purse like breadsticks. Help yourself, friend. There’s more than enough to go around.
