What brush did you use for the backgrounds of Steven Universe?

Avatar

The brush is proprietary to the show, so I can’t really show or hand out settings for it.  All I can say what I used was a custom brush made by Steven Sugar and adjusted by me to make it easier to use.

This year is nearly coming to a close, and I have an end of year send off to share with you all!  2015 was a year of significant improvement in terms of my artistic identity, and skill.  I still have a lot to learn, but I’ve gained a lot of confidence thanks to the support and comments I’ve gotten this year. And so as a thank you, my 2015 sketchbooks are now available for download on Gumroad!  It’s pay what you want, which means you can get 80+ pages of nearly all the drawings I’ve done for free! Thanks for the swell year, cheers to the next year! Closed on January 2016

Gumroad is donating all of it’s sale proceeds to UNICEF efforts in Puerto RIco today, September 27th 2017, so I will be bringing back my 2015 Sketchbook Edition temporarily on Gumroad.  It won’t be free, it’s $3+, but any amount will help the cause!

I’m closing the sale at 8PM PST, thank you for all the donations so far, I’m truly grateful for your support of the UNICEF aide efforts for Puerto Rico!

Ohi Jane, I was wondering if you'ld put together a new gumroad sketchbook pdf file of what you did in 2016 ? oWo), the one from 2015 was amazing ! If it's any trouble to you, please don't mind putting a price on this one instead of making it free ~

Actually...

It’s in the works right now, it’ll also have the sketches I’ve done in 2015.  Probably will be out soon (sorry to those who missed the first release, this one isn’t going to be free).

I read your last message on pen: does this mean that you don't plan with pencil when you draw? (you go straight at it with pen?) If so, what kind of practice do you do to get to that level?

Avatar

Basically, I haven’t used pencils since 2012, although to be completely transparent, some of the drawings I’ve made recently had color pencil underdrawings.  But before that, I stopped using pencil because it smudges, to learn how to be more confident in my linework, and I wanted to be like James Jean.

Why are there X’s on your drawings?

So this is a question I get ALL the time so I’ll just explain it in a general post since the answer is simple. There are X’s on drawings because I draw in pen and I make mistakes or it doesn’t look right and I’m crossing it out.  Like when a teacher marks up a test.   It’s a self edit that helps me mentally remove the bad parts of the drawing and make it look okay as a whole. I hope this makes sense and it’s not me saying the drawing is bad, just some parts of it are and I can’t erase pen.
