for a while there i was sympathetic to tumblr because of how much they’re in debt; i was kind of like “well of course they’re absolutely desperate for new users, they literally need the money or else tumblr goes down forever”. and then suddenly today it hit me that there’s actually no fucking reason for that debt to be causing these ui changes? the userbase has been INCREDIBLY clear about what they want from tumblr over the years, not to mention clear about the fact that even twitter people don’t need this place to look like twitter. it actually would be very… EASY? for them to just make changes in a direction people would actually be HAPPY with?

for fuck’s sake there were people trying to organize a “crab day” for tumblr despite tumblr doing nothing but telling us to go fuck ourselves for months on end. there were people spending hundreds of dollars on check marks just for the glee of MAKING FUN of twitter. can you IMAGINE how much money this userbase would donate to tumblr if they actually made ui updates geared toward what people have been asking for?

if tumblr actually crowdsourced ideas or even just LISTENED to their userbase it may have been possible for them to make way more money than they’re begging for now, they just insist on trying to drive their actual demographic and loyal userbase out for literally no reason

They are doing surveys that are really hard to find because their survey blog has reblogs disabled for some reason.

On this, the anniversary of the lunar landing, let us also celebrate the greatest post-mission achievement by a crewman.

I refer, of course, to the time Buzz Aldrin (age 72 at the time) cold-cocked a moon landing conspiracy theorist straight in his smug face after being accused of being a coward, liar, and thief.

Yes, someone was indeed dumb enough to tell a man so unafraid of death that he was willing to go into the void on a fragile explosive rocket, a coward.

Said dumbass was filming this confrontation as some sort of proof of moon fraud, but has instead captured this glorious moment of near-cosmic justice for us to loop for all time.

Aldrin was not charged with any crime. He should have been given another medal for public service.

CHEERS TO GUY WALTON FOR “OUTING” THE FOSSIL FUEL COMPANIES

From the article:

Walton has devised his own criteria for named heatwaves in the US, based on duration and extremity, on a one to five scale similar to hurricanes. Heatwave Chevron is classed as a four and is “historic”, Walton said. The meteorologist said he has a list of 20 oil and gas companies – including Exxon and Shell – for upcoming heatwaves and will turn to coal companies if he runs out of names.

OUTSTANDING MOVE

Y'all know what to do. Use Walton's naming system. Make it catch on.

UPS has reached an agreement with the Teamsters union to equip its iconic brown delivery trucks with air conditioning for the first time for new units.

The agreement, announced by UPS on Tuesday, comes as the delivery giant and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters negotiate the terms of a new contract for more than 330,000 U.S. employees. (source)

Unions work, unionize.

Workers need unions because It's 2023 and I can still see a post like this and involuntarily scream "What do you MEAN they didn't have air conditioning?!" out loud

god people on twitter are so fucking dumb someone said (correctly) that it sucks that oppenheimer yet again focuses on the emotional experience of yet another tortured white man genius and completely glosses over the people actually impacted or killed by the atrocity of the bomb and the entire process of its creation (literally correct!!!!)

and everyone has been spending the next several days gleefully dunking on them like "oh so you're mad the oppenheimer film was about oppenheimer? what did you expect?" "you want christopher nolan to make a film centering japanese voices? 🙄 lmao sure that would have gone well" "there is already a huge body of work in japanese cinema made by japanese filmmakers about their experience of the bomb, arguably all japanese cinema since that time had been affected by it, just say you're personally uneducated and go"

and i'm just like. you are all SO dumb and being purposefully obtuse to dunk on this person and make them sound unreasonable when the actual point is like. we (society) should stop giving american white man cinematic auteur filmmakers massive budgets to make tortured white man biopics centering the emotional experience of what was it like for this tortured white man when he was committing atrocities!!!!!! the point is we've made enough of these films! hollywood has been making them forever!!! make something else!!

also everyone conveniently focused on the fact that the original tweet mentioned japanese people bc there is a wealth of japanese cinema about the bomb but they conveniently ignored the other group the original tweet mentioned which was native & hispanic americans who were massively impacted by nuclear tests done in secrecy in new mexico which is something a lot of usamericans aren't even aware happened let alone something that hollywood is clamoring to make blockbuster films about. and like… yes oppenheimer is tortured on the day of the trinity test because of the existential horror of the bomb and i'm sure this is featured in the film, but that had nothing to do with the fact that the first bomb they dropped was on usamerican soil or with the real physical horrors that he actually inflicted on the usamericans downwind of the test site.

(and the tweet ALSO mentioned interned japanese americans which there ALSO is a dearth of stories about in usamerican media because there is no tortured white man at the center of it, it is just a horrific inhuman thing that the american government did to its own citizens, and the scotus decision that enshrined it in usamerican jurisprudence remains (well, functionally) on the books to this day with a direct straight line drawn to trump v hawaii in 2018. like. no one's making blockbuster films about this in america despite this being a USAMERICAN story, not one that japanese cinema in japan should tackle, because it is not interesting to hollywood without a famous recognizable figure to place at the center of it. the stain of it is too fucking great and addressing any of this properly would be too "anti-american" so no one is going to touch it. that film COULD NOT and would not get made by any big studios.)

it's so wild that the only way people can conceive of criticism of oppenheimer (or honestly any film) is within the film's own existing framework, i.e. a massive blockbuster about oppenheimer directed by christopher nolan on a $100M budget with an insane marketing push ("you want christopher nolan to shoehorn in japanese voices into that??? wtf??? idiot"), rather than as a critique of what kinds of movies get funded and made in hollywood, and which filmmakers get to make films in the american film industry.

The article states there are 39 projects, but that list has already grown to 50+ projects approved to either go into production or that have already been completed and needed a waiver to be promoted by the actors. I’m sure that list will continue to grow as the strike inevitably continues, and quickly. Good. To reiterate:

If independent productions are able to move forward on the union’s terms, that undermines the studio talking point that the union’s demands are “unrealistic.”

hey @staff what the fresh fuck is this

wow i sure wonder 🤔🤔 what the new layouts supposed to look like 🤔🤔🤔🤔 its a mystery

Don’t forget y’all that there’s a much better way for us to let Tumblr know what we think about specific changes, rather than @ ing staff or wip, and it’s sending in a support ticket and choosing feedback!

Tumblr reverted some of the asinine app decisions they made after a concerted feedback effort! So make sure to use this form! It’s what it’s for, but it’s not well advertised!
