Texas Republicans are now trying to pass Bill SB1646, which would remove transgender minors from parents who affirm their gender and support them getting proper transition care.
I repeat, they are trying to criminalize parents supporting their trans children and make it legally child abuse, and a removable offense
Its a lot of legal verbatim but the specific points are underlined
If you’re in Texas, please don’t think to yourself “there’s no way this will pass” and skip contacting your representatives about this - Arkansas recently passed a slew of anti-transgender laws including the first in the nation that prohibits minors from transitioning, and that’s emboldened transphobes. This law is only a single step further than that.
This is part of the exact same assault strategy that the Religious Right have used around legislation restricting access to abortion and family planning services, along with eroding some other rights/protections. And it has proven way too effective thus far.
Anybody who isn't cool with this really needs to pull together and develop some better strategies to push back against this controlling garbage. (Whatever those strategies might be. Never pretended to have all the answers here!)
Because these movements are just not going to stop. And these concerted tactics do keep working too well for them.

In response to a very specific question about how we should handle children who arrive at the border unattended, while we get this process of revamping the entire system started, AOC’s response was to:
1. Immediately require that only licensed facilities can house children
2. Address the actual question of whether or not these services should be contracted out as they are now (Which AOC just made VERY clear her stance on)
3. Specifically cited the issue of companies who are pushing to reopen (again, her stance on this is clear).
4. Then directly drew attention to a comprehensive framework for legislation which AOC and Rep Jayapal are actively trying to get support for. And the only way we get the support, to drive this kind of radical change, is to underscore that the people have power to make this change, and our activism and support is vital.
STOP LETTING PEOPLE PRESENT INFORMATION OUT OF CONTEXT SO THAT IT IS INCENDIARY AND UNDERMINES THE ACTUAL POLITICAL PUSHES THAT ARE IN YOUR INTEREST AND IN LINE WITH YOUR OWN RADICAL POLITICS.

Dustin Higgs is a Maryland based artist on Death Row for a crime he did not commit -
He was convicted and sentenced to the federal death penalty as an accomplice to the 1996 murders of Tanji Jackson, Tamika Black and Mishann Chinn. It was the first federal death sentence handed down in Maryland in the modern era.
Dustin was not the person who actually shot the three women. Nor was he an accomplice. In fact, it was Willis Haynes who pulled the trigger, and he was sentenced to life in prison plus 45 years after a separate jury spared him the death penalty for the crime. With the resumption of federal executions in 2020, Dustin's life is at serious risk.
He is sentenced to be excecuted on Jan 15. 2021. 3 days before MLK Day and just 5 DAYS BEFORE THE NEW FEDERAL ADMINISTRATION IS PUT IN PLACE

Ernest Barnes Jr. was born during the Jim Crow era in “the bottom” community of Durham, North Carolina, near the Hayti District of the city. He had a younger brother, James (b. 1942), as well as a half-brother, Benjamin B. Rogers Jr. (1920–1970). Ernest Jr. was nicknamed “June”. His father, Ernest E. Barnes Sr. ( –1966), worked as a shipping clerk for Liggett Myers Tobacco Company. His mother, Fannie Mae Geer (1905–2004), oversaw the household staff for a prominent Durham attorney and local Board of Education member, Frank L. Fuller Jr.
On days when Fannie allowed “June” (Barnes’ nickname to family and childhood friends) to accompany her to work, Mr. Fuller encouraged him to peruse the art books and listen to classical music. The young Ernest was intrigued and captivated by the works of master artists. By the time Barnes entered the first grade, he was familiar with the works of such masters as Toulouse-Lautrec, Delacroix, Rubens and Michelangelo. When he entered junior high school, he could appreciate, as well as decode, many of the cherished masterpieces within the walls of mainstream museums – although it would be many more years before he was allowed entrance because of segregation….
Barnes credits his college art instructor Ed Wilson for laying the foundation for his development as an artist. Wilson was a sculptor who instructed Barnes to paint from his own life experiences. “He made me conscious of the fact that the artist who is useful to America is one who studies his own life and records it through the medium of art, manners and customs of his own experiences.”…..
Throughout the Good Times television series (1974–79) most of the paintings by the character J.J. are works by Ernie Barnes. However a few images, including “Black Jesus” in the first season (1974), were not painted by Barnes. The Sugar Shack made its debut on the show’s fourth season (1976–77) during the opening and closing credits. In the fifth season (1977–78) The Sugar Shack was only used in the closing credits for five early episodes during that season. In the sixth season (1978–79), The Sugar Shack was only used in opening credits for the first eight episodes and in the closing credits for five early episodes during that season. In the fifth and sixth seasons (1977–79), The Sugar Shack appears in the background of the Evans family apartment. Barnes had a bit part on two episodes of Good Times: The Houseguest (February 18, 1975) and Sweet Daddy Williams (January 20, 1976).
Barnes’ artwork was also used on many television series, including Columbo, The White Shadow, Dream On, The Hughleys, The Wayans Bros., Wife Swap, and Soul Food, and in the movies Drumline and Boyz n the Hood……..
Barnes passed away on Monday evening, April 27, 2009 at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California from myeloid leukemia. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered in two places: at his hometown Durham, North Carolina, near the site of where his family home once stood, and at the beach in Carmel, California, one of his favorite cities.
