I was gunna put this in the tags but it’s a lot. When i first started going through the process of getting a diagnosis, i was labelled with ODD. I immediately took issue with this, it seemed like an unfair diagnosis based entirely on the session the psychiatrist had with my parents (which mostly consisted of “my child is being really difficult on purpose”), and Hoo Boy when i tell you ODD immediately strips you of your ability to call out anyone on anything, that would be an understatement. I couldn’t even disagree or bring up my concerns about the validity of MY OWN DIAGNOSIS without it being labelled as oppositional defiance. Whenever i displayed any negative emotion the “treatments” did so much more harm than good. When you label someone as ‘defiant’ (ugh), when that word is put on their medical record, that person is never allowed to complain about anything again. Knowing that POC are disproportionately affected with this diagnosis makes me feel sick, i can only imagine what’s being swept under the rug as someone just being “defiant to authority”, not even just in the medical field but as justification for police brutality and mass incarceration. When i say medical racism kills people, this is what i mean.

this is so fucking important. reblog.

^^^ this "diagnosis" also plays a large factor in (predominantly) black men being sedated by medics, without their consent, because the police said so. This practice does kill.

how is 'oppositional defiance disorder' even a thing

it sounds like some fake shit designed specifically to strip people of agency

This is breaking containment into the TERF enclosures which I very much expected, but I will happily shout from the rooftops that furry porn artists are more productive and beneficial to society than JKR’s incessant whining on the elon musk dick riding app about how much she hates trans people

1439 votes but 288 reblogs because the TERFs are afraid of the truth so they're just linking it directly to each other lmao

If you see this post it is important to send it to someone else so they too can understand

honestly as a person with a severe set of migraine triggers that means i am physically unable to play or watch the majority of 3D video games… i really don’t think ‘every game should have enough accessibility features that anyone could play it’ is quite the take people think it is. obviously i think that devs should be adding in as many accessibility features as they can. but i also think that with stuff like Videogames where the medium and the message are so deeply dependent on each other, saying “the gameplay needs to be x in order to best convey the experience this is intended to convey as a work of art” is completely legitimate.

like, it reminds me a lot of the era of this website when shitting on academia for being ‘inaccessible’ was the big thing, and, rather than focusing on the socioeconomic factors that systemically bar people from academia, the priority was mocking academic language. And yeah obviously a lot of academic texts are denser than they should be, but there really was a point in time in this website when a bunch of teens and twentysomethings were wholeheartedly convinced that if something couldn’t be read by the layman it was because the author was either elitist or incompetent. but some stuff is created for specific audiences.

i think the vast majority of video games DON’T fall into this category - off the top of my head, there are very very few video games i can think of that would lose artistic integrity if they were “”easier”” to beat. difficulty and artistic integrity are both highly subjective as well. i just think that despite it being an outlier it’s just something that’s really worth thinking of, especially if you’re advocating for video games as a Legitimate Art Form. Art as a whole need be accessible. not every individual work of art needs to be. Video games as a whole need to be accessible. not every individual game needs to be. etcetera etcetera and whatnot.

Either this post is conflating “accessibility” with “it had an easy mode” or you’ve mystified me completely.

What kind of artistic vision could possibly be hampered by…closed captions. Or text resize options. Or text to speech. Or button remapping. Or compatibility with multiple types of controllers. Or using more than color to convey important info. I could go on and on but you get the point.

i’m not conflating accessibility with easy mode at all. the confusion here isn’t that i’m using a narrower definition of accessibility than you are - i’m in fact using a much broader one. nothing you’ve listed there is anything i think would hamper artistic vision because nothing you’ve listed involves fundamentally changing the game’s design to allow it. i think those are all great options that as many video games as possible should strive to include. but although those are all very common accessibility options, that’s far from an exhaustive list.

you might get once i mean when i explain this a bit better

every game that has 3d graphics required 3d mode to be ‘switched on’. when i say 3D i’m not talking about vr stuff, or 3DS games, i mean quite literally any game made with fully-modeled characters and environments. the vast majority of these games are fully off the table for me because of my migraine condition. although it’s an atypical one, this is an accessibility concern.

but what can be done about that? almost nothing, without going back and completely redesigning the game’s visuals from scratch. This is what I mean about accessibility sometimes come into tension with a game’s artistic vision. obviously this is not an accommodation that can be made.

acting like accessibility in video games is a clear-cut issue that can be obtained by hitting everything on a checklist of features ignores both the diversity in types of video games and in types of disabilities a person may have.

how accessible can you make dance dance revolution before it stops being dance dance revolution? could you make a version of a multiplayer racing game that’s as fair for players with poor hand-eye coordination and reaction time as it is for the fully abled players they might be playing against? if someone is dyslexic, and has trouble reading for long stretches of time or at all, should all text-base games be fully voice acted no matter what that might do to the budget or pacing?

I don’t intend these types of questions to be a “gotcha” that says ‘since fully accessibility is impossible, accessibility doesn’t need to be a concern’. rather, this is a topic i care about a lot, so i think it’s worth discussing in a way that doesn’t pretend accessibility only looks like one set of things.

Additional context because I know the radfems are going to get their hands on this and love it:

  • "Korea has the largest gender pay gap in the rich world, with women earning 31 percent less than men, and women still face widespread discrimination in the labor market, something the movement recognizes."
  • "In 2016, a young man murdered a young woman in a Seoul public bathroom, telling police after that he killed her because women had always ignored him. Despite the perpetrator’s own statement, police refused to label the murder a hate crime. Furious, women flocked to online feminist message boards, communities, and chat forums. This wave of digital feminism attracted women from all backgrounds, including working-class women like Minji and Youngmi, making it different from traditional Korean feminism, which was largely confined to universities, NGOs that often received government support, and other elite spaces.
  • In December of that year, as Korea’s fertility rate hovered at 1.2 births per woman (it has since slid to 0.78, the lowest in the world), the Korean government launched an online “National Birth Map” that showed the number of women of reproductive age in each municipality, illustrating just what it expected of its female citizens. (South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol won the election in March 2022 with a message that blamed feminism for Korea’s low birth rate, and a promise to abolish the country’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. ) Women were outraged by the map, observing that the government appeared to consider them “livestock”; one Twitter user reportedly created a mock map illustrating the concentration of Korean men with sexual dysfunction. Several of these digital feminists responded with a boycott to the reproductive labor expected by the state and decided that the surest way to avoid pregnancy was to avoid men altogether.
  • It was through these online communities that 4B emerged as a slogan, and ultimately a movement.

It's not just about hating men.

It's a political statement and protest for equality that specifically seeks to eliminate the way the way Korean women are used, abused, discarded within the patriarchy by their own refusal to participate in any of it or associate with anyone who benefits from it.

It's very specifically about Demanding equality from men in power by refusing to take part in the patriarchy and challenging the way it perceives women.

It's becoming a topic in the west now and so I wanted to add all this context with the addendum that this is NOT an inherently transphobic movement. It's also completely autonomous meaning there is no "leader" of it.

Each person will have their own reasons and method of participating in this movement. Anyone can join or be part of it. Yes this includes radfems and TERFs so when they eventually try to co-opt this movement as their own let's remember that they don't speak for all feminists and theyre definitely NOT the voice of oppressed Korean women who started this, and as such have No reason to put themselves in the spotlight of this movement. And we have no reason to let them.

everyone saying "art doesn't need to be perfect" hasn't taken into account the art monster, the monster that comes and kills you if art doesn't look exactly like it did in your head

You can save people from the art monster by reblogging their stuff, by the way.

Americans, these are things we are NOT saying in 2024:

“Voting blue won’t solve anything.” Yes it will: if enough of us do it, it will solve a problem called Trump’s second term in the White House. We unfortunately live in a two-party system. If you refuse to vote, you’re effectively voting for Trump. I shouldn’t need to explain this to people, yet here we are.

“It doesn’t matter who’s president. Both candidates are the same anyway.” No, they are REALLY not. Biden was never my first choice, and his shipments of arms to Israel are despicable, but don’t try to tell me even for a second that a second Trump term would be the same for the world as a second Biden term.

“But voting blue won’t fix [fundamental underlying problem in America].” Voting for Democrats cannot fix every issue, this is true. But by saying this and ONLY this you are discouraging people from voting by making them feel hopeless. Voting is one of many tools in our arsenal, not the only tool, but an important one, and it does matter.

“You shouldn’t vote blue, you should do [other thing] instead.” See above: you can vote and protest and organize at the same time. It’s not either/or. You can do it all. Stop discouraging voters from exercising their rights under the guise of leftism.

“Voting is just legitimizing government power. It makes you part of the system.” Literally just shut up. Women and people of color didn’t fight for their voting rights to have you say things like this. If you live in America and you can legally vote, then you should fucking vote, and vote blue. There is no neutral option.

“Voting blue just makes you complicit in [this bad policy].” Inaction, and allowing Trump to have a second term, is worse for the entire world than any Democrat policy. Yes, even that one. Voting is not about finding a perfect unproblematic candidate. It is about choosing the lesser of two evils.

“Voting doesn’t work because—” STOP IT. STOP DISCOURAGING PEOPLE FROM VOTING.

You know who wants you NOT to vote? Trump supporters, that’s who. You should be suspicious of ANYONE who is suggesting that your vote doesn’t matter, or that both candidates are the same, or that Biden’s policy on XYZ means you shouldn’t vote for him. Trump supporters aren’t trying to get your vote by saying, “Vote for Trump!” They’re trying to get your vote by DISCOURAGING YOU FROM VOTING AT ALL.

I don’t like Biden either, but Trump is unequivocally worse. Voting doesn’t fix everything, but it is the minimum fucking requirement of living in a democracy. Voting for president has real, tangible, immediate impacts on people’s lives, and choosing not to vote is not the rebellion you think it is, it is just relinquishing your voice. So fucking vote. THIS IS A GROUP PROJECT AND DAMN IT WE ARE NOT FAILING BECAUSE OF YOU.

Reblogging this again in honor of the dipshit in my notes crying and screaming about things I did not say. “Why do you like Biden why are you saying he’s good” I don’t. Says it right there in the post. “But voting won’t fix everything” I know. Says it right there in the post. “Voting is the bare minimum” Amazing! Says that in the post too. “Why aren’t you telling people to do things beside vote” I literally did. Read the fucking post.

If you don’t like Biden’s support for Israel, you should know that it is nothing compared to Trump’s support for Israel, and the Republican Party in general. And they are using American influence in entirely different ways.

Biden: “Israel is our ally, and we support our allies. However, let’s talk behind the scenes and use our material support to put pressure on them to stop their part of the violence and come to a viable peace agreement.”

Trump: “Fuck yeah, genocide is awesome! Let’s kill all the brown people! Let’s kill all the Muslims! I’m going to give you everything you could ever want with no strings!” Trump is supported by Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians, who believe in the Rapture, which is a completely whacked interpretation of Revelation in which, for Jesus to come back, Israel has to be destroyed and all Jews killed, except that God will kill all the people who destroy Israel. Therefore, Rapture believers want someone else (preferably Muslims) to destroy Israel and commit genocide against Jews, so that both Jews and Muslims will be wiped out.

Those are your two choices.

On the one hand, a guy who stands by Israel politically and militarily but is also advocating for justice and peace behind the scenes, or a guy who is 100% ride-or-die for the worst of Netanyahu’s violence and backed by people who are hoping to use this to create more genocide in the future.

And if you say “well, I just won’t vote,” you are contributing to the victory of the guy who is vocally pro-genocide.

I recently saw a post trying to discourage votes for Biden by revealing things that have happened under Biden. However I’ve noticed people doing that never seem to want to discuss the problem or policy under Republicans.

The post revealed the large number of immigrants deported under Biden. What the poster was careful not to point out is that Republicans consider only deporting several hundred thousand people to be an “Open Door” policy they need to fix by sending everyone back and slamming the door shut.

Biden hasn’t fixed abortion rights. Oh, you mean those rights Trump succeeded in destroying by stacking the Supreme Court with conservative judges who lied about not revoking Rowe vs Wade. Do you think conservatives are happy with States being able to decide to protect abortion? Do you think they aren’t working to change that?

Israel. See the post above on the rapture. Understand how deeply help that belief is. I had an elderly neighbor who used to donate $25 a week to her church so they would have enough money to send Jewish people back to Israel for the end times.

Look, if the Republicans take the House, Senate and Presidency, you will learn far too quickly and sadly how badly you’ve been decieived.

You are voting for every Democrat on that ballot purely as a matter of survival.

The inclination toward not voting, or voting for unelectable third party candidates because Biden, the Democrats or government generally isn’t doing exactly what you want, the way you want and when is an indulgence you need to have put behind you because it doesn’t meet the moment.

You aren’t voting to craft your ideal government. You’re voting to craft the government that will move us closer to where you want us to be — and even if it isn’t much closer, no one can afford to be moved further away.

And if you need more motivation:

…Y'all do remember that America has nukes, right? Like, a lot of them. And the standard global policy in the event of a nuclear war is still Mutually Assured Destruction.

Do I like Biden? No. But I do think he’s reasonable enough not to set off nuclear armageddon over a dick measuring contest.

Meanwhile let’s all go ahead and remember when North Korea had made a major advancement in their nuclear program, Trump decided it was a great time to start taunting their notoriously thin-skinned dictator with schoolyard insults over twitter. Trump has always lived in a world devoid of any real consequences. He would absolutely push the button just for the hell of it.

Like, again, just a reminder. The President of the United States has the power to end the world. Anytime he wants. Why the FUCK do you think it’s a good idea to let Donald Trump have that kind of power???

It’s absolutely terrifying being America’s neighbour, dear god. During the Trump presidency, I was laying awake at night sometimes wondering if the latest international incident was going to be what finally did it. I don’t care about your moral purity. I care about not getting fucking nuked. I can’t vote in your goddamn elections, but I know you idiots have the power to kill us all at any given moment, so trust me: Biden is better than Trump.

Vote for Biden, and for the love of god apply some pressure towards nuclear disarmarment, because American activists really don’t give a shit about that anymore, which is pretty concerning given that the nukes haven’t gone anywhere. They’re still all sitting there. Your entire Cold War stash is still armed and ready to launch at a moments notice. For fucks sake, PLEASE. Remember that your country is a nuclear superpower.

I love how Warframe treats some of the wildest elements of its premise as completely unremarkable. A lesser game would never shut the fuck up about how badass it is that you're a space ninja. Warframe is like "yeah yeah yeah we know you're a space ninja, what's important right now is restoring the local wetlands."

Warframe is fundamentally a game about ecological conservation in which you happen to play a biomechanical space killerfreak.

Child of a brutal debt colony whose brain is legally owned by a hypercapitalist cult: "Do you wanna go ride hoverboards with us?"

Member of an ancient mercenary culture, wearing the cloned skin of a legendary historical warrior held together by psychic generational trauma: "Hell yes I do."

so: masking: good, unequivocally. please mask and please educate others on why they should mask to make the world safer for immune compromised people to participate in.

however: masking is not my policy focus and it shouldn't be yours, either. masking is a very good mitigation against droplet-born illnesses and a slightly less effective (but still very good) mitigation against airborne illnesses, but its place in the pyramid of mitigation demands is pretty low, for several reasons:

  • it's an individual mitigation, not a systemic one. the best mitigations to make public life more accessible affect everyone without distributing the majority of the effort among individuals (who may not be able to comply, may not have access to education on how to comply, or may be actively malicious).
  • it's a post-hoc mitigation, or to put it another way, it's a band-aid over the underlying problem. even if it was possible to enforce, universal masking still wouldn't address the underlying problem that it is dangerous for sick people and immune compromised people to be in the same public locations to begin with. this is a solvable problem! we have created the societal conditions for this problem!

here are my policy focuses:

  • upgraded air filtration and ventilation systems for all public buildings. appropriate ventilation should be just as bog-standard as appropriately clean running water. an indoor venue without a ventilation system capable of performing 5 complete air changes per hour should be like encountering a public restroom without any sinks or hand sanitizer stations whatsoever.
  • enforced paid sick leave for all employees until 3-5 days without symptoms. the vast majority of respiratory and food-borne illnesses circulate through industry sectors where employees come into work while experiencing symptoms. a taco bell worker should never be making food while experiencing strep throat symptoms, even without a strep diagnosis.
  • enforced virtual schooling options for sick students. the other vast majority of respiratory and food-borne illnesses circulate through schools. the proximity of so many kids and teenagers together indoors (with little to no proper ventilation and high levels of physical activity) means that if even one person comes to school sick, hundreds will be infected in the following few days. those students will most likely infect their parents as well. allowing students to complete all readings and coursework through sites like blackboard or compass while sick will cut down massively on disease transmission.
  • accessible testing for everyone. not just for COVID; if there's a test for any contagious illness capable of being performed outside of lab conditions, there should be a regulated option for performing that test at home (similar to COVID rapid tests). if a test can only be performed under lab conditions, there should be a government-subsidized program to provide free of charge testing to anyone who needs it, through urgent cares and pharmacies.

the last thing to note is that these things stack; upgraded ventilation systems in all public buildings mean that students and employees get sick less often to begin with, making it less burdensome for students and employees to be absent due to sickness, and making it more likely that sick individuals will choose to stay home themselves (since it's not so costly for them).

masking is great! keep masking! please use masking as a rhetorical "this is what we can do as individuals to make public life safer while we're pushing for drastic policy changes," and don't get complacent in either direction--don't assume that masking is all you need to do or an acceptable forever-solution, and equally, don't fall prey to thinking that pushing for policy change "makes up" for not masking in public. it's not a game with scores and sides; masking is a material thing you can do to help the individual people you interact with one by one, and policy changes are what's going to make the entirety of public life safer for all immune compromised people.

Google is actively blocking Captcha on Firefox

Firefox users have noticed that captchas - both the picture kind and the click the box kind - are not resolving on Firefox. Tests on Chromium based browsers show that it works perfectly fine on them. It is also known that Chrome will be disabling all ad-blockers in June when it moves to Manifest v3, which will greatly limit what extensions can do.

If you use Firefox, there is an extension called User-Agent Switcher and it allows you to change your browser's UA to Chrome. This will allow you to bypass reCaptcha/Captcha blocks set up by Google and make them function properly.

It could be a code snafu on Google's part - but given how predatory they have been acting lately, I'm going to guess not. Don't get locked out of your websites or feel forced to use Chrome again just to browse.

so the latest update to fallout 4 broke one of the key tools for modding, the fan-made script extender. when it's been updated and the modding scene is back on its feet, would it be helpful to new fans if i threw together a list of essentials? there are. a shitload. and fallout 4 is a game best played lightly modded imo
