A better, more positive Tumblr

Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.

Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).  

Let’s first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with today’s policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

Constructive Critisim: You’ve failed. Not only yourselves @staff but the whole community of tumblr. You say “freedom of expression” and yet take away that freedom from fanartists, positivity blogs, and others all in the name of making it a “safe place” for those who’re underage. You have done the complete opposite, you aren’t making it safer, you’ve made a war zone by your own hand on your own doorstep. Sadly, I will probably delete my blog, there’s no point to be in a place where “freedom” has chains.

I would have maybe gotten it if you had did an all round sweep of every tag there was. However only nuking one and completely ignoring the others (aggressive hate groups hiding behind “freedom of expression”) is not equitable in any way.

Unless you do something - You will not see me after December.

Everyone, if you are a creator go to this website and sign up for their email course on how to grow & keep your fanbase and monetize your content. Currently lots of traffic so the website is a bit slow to load. Seriously, do it.

It’s a 7-day email course. Sandra (blog owner) recommend having your own website and to be self-hosted so that when things like this happen it doesn’t affect you, and to start working on an email list rather than only focussing on the # of followers on social media. With email there is no algorithm that hides your content. So if you have 300 subscribers, all 300 subscribers receive your email instead of having 300 followers and only 10 people seeing your content. 

So basically you gonna need things like Wordpress self-hosted using, for example, BlueHost that costs around $4 a month and Mailchimp (free). 

If you don’t have any money, I still highly recommend Sandra’s course because the information she gives out is amazing and also work without a website 80% of the time. Definitely worth checking out. 

How it feels to be stabbed

Getting stabbed is an experience that no one in their right mind would want to have. But, what if you do get stabbed? What would that feel like?

It usually feels like you’re being punched.

The description of being punched really hard comes up a lot when people describe the experience. One woman said she didn’t even realize she was being stabbed, she just thought her attacker was punching her as hard as he could. Many people don’t feel the actual puncturing, just the force of the knife hitting them.

You might feel nothing at all.

This wasn’t as common as the feeling of being hit, but some people said they literally felt nothing. One person said they felt nothing, but their brain started racing and their fight or flight kicked in. Another didn’t realize someone stabbed them until they saw that they were bleeding profusely.

Occasionally, it feels like you got shocked.

A few stab wound survivors described it as a very quick, but powerful, electric shock. One person described it as static electricity, while another said it was like lightening hitting them. The pain of the initial shock goes away as quickly as it occurred.

Eventually, over time,  it’s probably going to hurt.

Of course the location of the stab wound effects how much it would hurt. Getting stabbed in the arm isn’t going to hurt as badly as a stab that punctured a lung. But after a while, you will most likely feel some pain. If the person wiggles the knife while it’s still in you, the pain may be more intense.

Villain!Deku fanfic recommendations part 2!

These are my personal favs, I might miss a few but i’ll try my best! (there may or may not be repeats from my last rec list)

1. “Something’s Gotta Give” - TubbsTheCat: Shigarki and co get to Izuku before the heroes do. People die, it’s sad and emotional and really really good.

2. “Playing With a Full Deku” -  Haurvatat: Izuku is more of a sassy vigilante than a true villain. Funny and sad at the same time. There’s a side story with some Todoeku :)

3. “ All for One, All for Him” -  Auresalia: Total villain izuku. Heartbreaking at times and so so good. 24 chapters of angst and amazing writing

4. ”It’s Spelled ‘Trader’ Not 'Traitor'” -  JackobolTrades : okay so I love this fic but it’s not really villain izuku but oh well. Basically Izuku has AFO and uses it to help people with their quirks but it gets a little complicated. Slight tw

5. “One May Smile, and Smile, And Be A Villain” - AvaRose: Izuku isn’t accepted into UA and becomes a police officer instead but it doesn’t really work out as planned. 

6. “Sleeping With Ghosts” - Lalazee: Small but really awesome one shot. Villain Deku plus an angry Katsuki and at grocery store :)  

7. “Pulling the Wires” -  catsplosionxd, PsychoLimbo: :) I just HAD to include PTW. If you haven’t read it already do it now!!

8. “Decomposition” - thepensword: super angsty one shot. Poor Izuku :(

9. “At Times so Self Destructive” -  theshoutingslytherin: SUPER emotional. tw for suicide attempt. Villain Izuku defect AU

10. “Changeling” - littleberd: noumu Izuku. Very good but super angsty and a few tw just a heads up.

i just hope andrew garfield knows that his effort to make peter parker bisexual mattered, i hope he knows it wasn’t for nothing, i hope he knows that even though sony and marvel ultimately put profit ahead of the well-being of lgbt young people, a lot of those same young people know what andrew did and are very moved by the knowledge that he cared enough to try.

Some Quick French Lingos

Have a French speaking muse but you’re not too familiar with French and can’t be bothered to conjugate your verbs? Don’t trust Google Translate? Here’s a small list of injections you can use! Just consider how realistic it is for your muse to interject ( in another language ) like this- you don’t want to overdo it. It’s usually in instances of stress or distraction they would use some of these. Some of these are conjugated to be directed at only one other person as well.

Writing a runaway/homeless character?

It’s very possible that one day you’ll want to write a runaway, or someone living on the streets, or someone who is just up to no good, or all of the above! You need some good old research. Well here; I did some of that work for you! 

Obviously not all of these characteristics/actions are interchangeable so use discretion (i.e. I’m not implying that all homeless people jump borders or shoplift, but some may if they get desperate. These are just suggestions).

Wikihow - You know it. Like Wikipedia, I wouldn’t put my full trust in them, but they’re pretty thorough. Runawayguide already discusses some of this stuff, but these are good “big idea” articles.

Other articles - I can’t guarantee that any of these are 100% accurate or trustworthy, so if you’re having your doubts try to get a few more sources to back it up. 

Also, FYI, it is legal for adolescents in most states to run away. I wasn’t aware of this at all before my research and thought it was a cool tidbit.

I love Gordon Ramsay so much.

He comes from a very poor family. His father was an alcoholic who beat him and his mother (he once poured hot tea over her and put her in hospital several times), his brother is a drug addict, he literally built an empire out of nothing.

He credits his mother as his biggest inspiration and often has her cooking in his shows.

When he left his first restaurant he pulled a successful Jerry Maguire - the entire kitchen staff went with him. That tells you what he’s like to work with.

He was one of the first to give a restaurant to a female chef.

He went to prison (Gordon Behind Bars) and taught inmates to bake and they opened a bakery (Bad Boys Bakery) that is still running. He hired one of them when he got out.

He did documentaries about the cruelty of shark hunting and cocaine. (when he discovered cocaine was used by his staff he didn’t fire anyone but made sure they are offered treatment)

His kids are a treasure.

He is always ALWAYS kind to servers.

When one of his partners (Marcus Wareing) wanted to leave they got into a fight and settled it in court, they no longer speak to each other but this is what Marcus said about him after the fight: 

I feel bad that the first association to him for a lot of people is this shouty TV chef when he’s truly a wonderful person.

Uncle Gordon

Gordon is precious and I love him.

I’m really glad people post stuff like this because honestly yes, the only thing I knew about Gordon Ramsey at first was that he swears like a sailor. It’s good to know that he’s a much more genuine person than that. This is probably also a good example of how television can shape our perceptions of people; TV producers are going to focus on what gets the most attention, not on what is necessarily best or most true about a person. It’s good to be mindful of that while watching reality shows and movies.
