Nothing Important

A collection of gaming discussion, snarky comments, stupid jokes, informative articles, interesting links, cool pictures and whatever else I'm interested in at the time.
Millennials have made it clear they most want career advancement and growth, something not every workplace can offer on demand. But in lieu of those opportunities, many companies are resorting to quick fixes in an attempt to shape culture. Whether it’s free snacks, Ping-Pong tables, or beer taps, these perks—like participation trophies before them—are trinkets that do not thoughtfully consider the symptoms of the problem before providing a treatment. Vacation usage—a benefit repeatedly found to be more valued than raises, bonuses, and retirement plans—is a measure of trust and an important part of the work-life balance equation. Despite its value, a study by Project: Time Off revealed Millennials are not taking the vacation they earn. In fact, they are the most likely generation to forfeit time off, even though they receive the least amount of vacation days. Research into Millennial vacation behavior shows they are afraid, not entitled. Compared to Boomers, Millennials are at least twice as likely to say they are fearful of losing their job. This cohort worries about what the boss might think, wants to show complete dedication, and does not want their bosses to see them as replaceable. These findings are counterintuitive to the coddled Millennial stereotype that ignores the circumstances of the generation’s experience. Coming of age during an economic downturn has consequences.

this sponsored post on the atlantic for a vacation planning app has a sharper insight into current labor issues than eight years of obnoxious thinkpieces from the atlantic abt millennials, this feels like a diss track (via ultralaser)

And they have the audacity to charge you 5 bucks for it on the Wii, another dollar if you want it on the Wii U version with save states, and another five bucks with NO CHANCE at a discount if you want it on your 3DS.

And I bet they'll be happy to charge you another fiver for it again on the Switch. Cut the crap, Nintendo. Start offering VC titles at a more reasonable price.

Castlevania 3 Soundtrack Remastered

This is a mix a friend of mine made a couple years ago, originally uploaded to bandcamp: https://kirbypufocia.bandcamp.com/album/cviii-no-densetsu-or-whatever

Castlevania III was originally released in Japan as Akumajou Densetsu (悪魔城伝説), and it used the VRC6 for sound expansion. This gave it three extra channels of audio, which primarily included voices not found on the NES. Though many people prefer the original, fuller version of the soundtrack, each version has its pros and cons. This mix seeks to implement the best of both worlds by carefully mixing both versions together, and re-balancing the mix.

I uploaded it to youtube, including a piano display for both original versions of the soundtrack, to help visualize the differences between them (and how this version is pulling from both of them).

This isn’t because Burger King is nicer in Denmark. It’s the law, and the US is actually the only so-called “developed” country that doesn’t mandate jobs provide a minimum amount of paid vacation, sick leave, or both.

kinda debunks that claim that they can’t afford to pay their workers those sort of wages and still make a profit

Its corporate greed, plain and simple.

It is the same in Sweden. It is so funny every time an american company opens up offices here and then tries to do it the american way and all the unions go “I don’t think so”.

They refused to sign on to the union deals that govern such things as pay/pension and vacation in Sweden. Most of our rights are not mandated by law (we don’t have a minimum wage for example) but are made in voluntary agreements between the unions and the companies.

But they refused, saying that they had never negotiated with any unions anywhere else in the world and weren’t planning to do it in Sweden either.

Of course a lot of people thought it was useless fighting against an international giant, but Handels (the store worker’s union) said that they could not budge, because that might mean that the whole Swedish model might crumble. So they went on strike in the three stores that the company had opened so far.

Cue a shitstorm from the press, and from right wing politicians. But the members were all for it, and other unions started doing sympathy actions. The teamsters refused to deliver goods to their stores, the financial unions blockaded all economical transactions regarding Toys ‘r Us and the strike got strong international support as well, especially in the US.

In the end, Toys ‘r Us caved in, signed the union deal, and thus their employees got the same treatment as Swedish store workers everywhere.

The right to be treated as bloody human beings and not disposable cogs in a machine.

Hey it’s yet another reason why I’ve decided to run for office!

This looks like a joke but I copied this from Overwatch’s official twitter account:

Silly/funny/stupid on it’s own, sure, but when you add in the context that it was a direct response to this tweet where a girl called another kid a “Hanzo Main” for stealing her pencil, it becomes less funny/stupid and more endearing. Here’s a link to the Gamespot interview that the quote came from: (link)

There was a lot of speculation on who Steve Englehart would put in his Avengers lineup. I’m sure nobody predicted that it would include a character from a 1950s romance comic like Patsy Walker. This is why Stainless Steve was always one of my favorite Marvel writers: he was never predictable.
